Here's a poll for you all!

Long-winded description (you can skip this if you want): I've been seeing so many deals and coupons being handed off to people with cancelled subscriptions / non-subscribers, that now I am questioning the value of the Classic Plan (vs. simply cancelling). The trend of what I see going on at HB is, notably, devalue-ing the Classic Plan by constantly removing Classic's benefit of "more games than any other subscription" by giving all 12 games to Premium subscribers too; constantly removing Classic's benefit of "cheaper price than the Premium subscription" by giving non-Classic subscribers coupons for $6 / month, which is half the price of Classic's $12 / month; etc. In the past, HB had also been giving great deals to new subscribers and none to current subscribers. It's hard for me to not see this trend eventually push the Classic subscription into a position of being worthless (or even a negative asset) rather than gaining in value. This is my personal view & I'm interested to see other people's: What do you feel?

There's really nothing else to see here. (basic sg-tools Lvl 0) :)

Have a great week, everybody!

Update: Thanks to everyone who's responded so far!

The poll right now (7/7/21 @11 pm UTC) looks like:
6.8x more people are happy about their Classic subscription than are unhappy
17.0x more people were happy about cancelling their Classic subscription than were unhappy

I kept my classic subscription and am happy about it. Although I never actually bought a Humble Choice bundle :)
I just keep pauzing the subscription each month in the hope there is a bundle I want to keep.

Lol, that picture looks like how I felt on Tuesdays back when HB used to always release new bundles on that day!

I wanted to make a joke about a sandwich, then decided that I'm too inexperienced with making jokes to make a good one. ("Maybe you are happy because classic subs come with extra lettuce and tomato?" Yes, I am really hungry right now!)

Anyway, I am glad you are happy! :)

I was never really a regular subscriber I guess? I just subbed every time there was a bundle with enough interesting stuff to make me pay the price and then I just unsubbed afterwards. I knew when the switch came that I would never buy the bundles so often to justify having to think about pausing every month, so I just unsubbed and never regretted that decision. Not really a fan of this business practice either and didn't want to be a part of that.

I also dislike the "manually pause it every month" routine - I'd much rather have a "pause until I un-pause" option, except I think they'd probably lose most of their money from people who normally just forget to pause and then decide to keep the games rather than go through the hassle of getting a refund. Now I feel like I live in constant fear of forgetting to pause & getting auto-charged for a month I don't want - I've even set up multiple reminders, which in themselves are a bit stressful to get. Your comment makes me think twice whether I really want to live like this!

You're describing the life I hate to live haha. It depends on how often you buy the bundles? Last one I bought was September 2020 so they're more of a once in a while thing for me. And that would be if the Choice has several games I want, if I just want a game or two then I trade for them.

by giving non-Classic subscribers coupons for $6 / month

I (and many other people) got the $6/month coupon as a classic subscriber.
For me keeping classic subscription was good so far (although they kinda killed the main advantage of classic - being able to pick 10 games, but at least we all get even more games).

Eh, I bought a few of those $99 / 12 (or 13) Month Classic gift subs (and Premium that become classic when you put them on a classic account), so not $6 / mo, but basically $8 / mo. I pause about 1/3rd of the time, so I have over 3 years left probably. I'd say it has paid off, I've definitely gotten several hundred dollars worth of games off my wishlist every year so far, for about $60 / year.

I am a Humble Partner and have a old classic Sub..
I wrote them 3 weeks ago what i think about the cheap prices for new subs., that go mostly to multiaccounters, and that it feels like a punishment to have a """premium""" classic sub and that i think about end the sub and jump on the next cheap sub train (with the same 12 games, since 6 months+....). And many more that made very clear that i see it as VERY wrong what they do since over 6 months.
The first support member forwarded it to a specialist, that not answered after 3 weeks. So i wrote yesterday night a response to the first support member that i still wait on a reaction of the specialist.

We will see if they react and with what.

Please let us know what you find out!

I have various unsubstantiated theories (like, maybe when they see they can't meet a minimum income for the current bundle to cover their costs - they start handing out deals & immediately stop when they reach the threshold income, which would help explain the randomness of getting deals). I do agree that their model of devaluation serves only to drive down loyalty for customers who can be loyal (I feel that the model they have right now treats everyone like they are re-sellers: "if you pause rather than cancel, you're more likely to be a re-seller").

My 12 month Sub runs out in september, and after seeing all the pandering to new customers only, Humble can forget about me renewing...espiaclly after that long ass PR stunt they were on with the classic sub, going away, and last chance to get onboard with it!!...bla bla bla

My thoughts exactly.

I even tried to get a refund on my unused months at one point. They refused, obviously. But once I finally find another 4 or 5 months that have stuff I want, I'm not renewing.

I was barely even buying Humble Monthly when they switched to "Choice". Blame that on them conveniently not telling me how a "subscription" model works back when I bought a monthly for the first time (apparently it's been a whole 6 years since then) and then leeching off my card for 3 extra months until I noticed something was off. Only bought 2 monthlies since then, always making quadruple sure that I un-subscribed afterwards. Lesson learned- stay away from subscription models.
I guess, since they don't send me any of these "offers" other people are getting, they don't consider someone who wants to buy "just 1 bundle" a particularly valuable customer.

Anyway, I guess this is completely unrelated to your question. I kinda wanted to give the perspective of someone who wasn't a fan of the concept of the "Classic Plan" to begin with. (Also bump.)

Ouch, I'm sorry to hear you got burned by HB!

Do you have access to virtual account numbers? With virtual CC's, you could just use one with a set money & time limit to pay for a month, and that way if they try to auto-bill for the next month if you forget to unsubscribe, they'll get auto-rejected. Btw, thanks for your comment!

I'm not sure... I probably do?
Regardless, that ship sailed a long time ago. I would rather just not deal with subscriptions at all. Furthermore, since they switched it to "Humble Choice", even if they have a monthly that I really want, without one of their "offers" it's non-optimal to buy it myself since other people are getting a much better deal.

I've paused so often that I'm still on the year subscription that I bought in 2018, so I haven't had to decide whether to renew it or not yet.

Same here. I don't even remember when I bought the 12 month subscription, but I bought it because it was one of those deals where you got a free month and some store credit.

I've been fine with keeping my Classic plan so far, but I do feel the value has declined. Still, the cynic in me believes that HB wants to push people off the Classic plan, and when that pool of subscribers drops low enough they will stop offering so many extra deals to new/regular plan subscribers. So I'll hang onto it for now.

I guess I should add that HB used to let people access the Humble Trove & get their 20% discount when they got auto-Unpaused for a month but before paying / getting auto-billed for the month. HB changed that a little while ago, so now people can only access Humble Trove after paying for the month.

Currently, they remove the discount and Trove access instantly when you cancel.
It used to remain active for the entire month that you'd paid for.

Ooh! Now that is really just unfair in my mind - when you pay for a month, you're paying for the entire month! :/ I mean, what would happen if a gym charges you for a month of membership, and then stops giving you access to gym benefits halfway through just because you told them you're not resubscribing to their gym next month?

Still have a classic sub, but managed to wrangle an annual deal as well so that I can keep it going.
Unfortunately due to how HB have been doing things, there has been absolutely no benefit in keeping the "classic" sub.

I did the 1 year for USD$99 and then they added all 12 games so I was happy. I don't collect games anymore other than ones I would play and humble usually has the best selection.

Thank you for the bump!

Also, are you asking how I got my avatar? If so, I started out with just the plain Steam question mark, added an exclamation mark after a few months, then got it Christmas-ified (thanks to jbondguy007!) two years in a row. If jbondguy is willing & I have a chance, I'm going to see if I can get Christmas lights added this year. ;)

Oh no, my point was just that it looks cooler than mine. You see, my avatar is based on the same key idea: a question mark merged with an exclamation mark is called an interrobang (‽), so I grabbed one as a visual pun on the Steam question mark and rotated it 180 degrees in the style of Spanish punctuation (¿Verdad? ¡Sí!), producing what is called an inverted interrobang (⸘). The current edition of the avatar has been Christmasified once and Halloweenified spookified once (not necessarily in that order; I don't remember with certainty which happened first anymore and would have to check the threads), but otherwise it's the same ⸘ visual pun I started with. People have always said it looked like a pregnant woman, though, so I'm sure this is a factor in the final result. :P

I've honestly used the 20% discount just as much as the subscription itself, so while I am pausing a lot I still feel like I'm getting my money's worth. It would be nice if they would throw Classic subscribers a bone with the subscription discounts though.

Humble Choice is fine, the 10%-20% store discount are great (often used on already discounted games to get them even cheaper) and since I can pause (or cheekily get a discount on the next bundle) anytime I don't see why I would ever quit it.

Classic has 12 games guaranteed for 12 usd, at first this was really rewarding as all the other tiers where really bad, with the "best" being 10 games for 20 usd, but as time has passed Humble gave 12 games for 20 usd and with multiple offers such as 6 usd a month for a year or things like that Vlassic has become less valuable, but still holds up the advantage that if the special offers stop or become worse, classic will be the same, 12 usd for 13 games.

Bump.

I kept classic (or rather, I signed up for classic when I heard they were switching to Choice) with the expectation that I'd be pausing most months and getting a decent deal during months that had games I was interested in. I'm ambivalent about it because new subscribers seem to be able to get better prices than the classic $12/month, but it can still be a good deal (and occasionally Humble will toss in a $4 off coupon when I try to pause).
