yeah, that's all i really ask is for some reasoning/details. even if the reasons crap, that's fine with me. but they masked it as if it was all to "benefit us" & to make things "more straightforward" when it holds no benifit (for us) & is even more straightbackwards in reality. (not even gonna touch the region side of it too)

I read it as how devs are exploiting the store for visibility, profit etc. This news post is mostly just a bunch of bullshit and I don't believe the other two will have anything to do with the gifting changes either.

Well, let's see what their other two posts will say.

I expected something much worse with a title like that

And for those who haven't seen it yet Reddit Thread about people asking Steam to bring back gifting
It's a pretty good read. The Blog post is completely worthless. I'm not sure who their PR person is but they need to be fired.

They're just following orders, it's not their fault. :/

There are so many logical errors in that post...
I wish he had done a better technical analysis on his statements.
Comment has been collapsed.
Granted he does have a few mistakes, but I liked the suggestion of making every country pay the full USD price.
Comment has been collapsed.
That doesn't work for countries paying higher prices than the base USD price.
Btw, yeah I wish that was an option, being a region restricted user myself, I wish I could buy region free copies from steam store even if that means paying the base USD price. But I can see why that wouldn't work for Valve.
Most of the regions except NA and EU were suffering from the gifting restrictions for a while. The new changes actually made NA and west EU users realize how bad it is.
Ah.. Also something I forgot to say. I see everyone mentioning keys being unrestricted and all gray-market users will use them now instead of the gifts, so nothing has changed.
I wonder if these statements will be counterproductive and push Valve even further to make the same changes on keys as soon as possible.
Comment has been collapsed.
It would if they were lowered to the equivalent price in USD,
I wish Valve knew about proper pricing by using XE's currency converter.

Probably no. I think (based on what TB said) they wanna remove cards as incentive to make trash games just to earn from cards. Like, sell 1000 copies and you'll get an option to have cards and so on. Who knows, it's Valve.
Comment has been collapsed.
I already knew they would restrict steam gifts at some point, but I was hoping it wouldn't happen too soon. And I'm pretty sure that they'll restrict keys soon too. They're just guesses obviously, but I never go wrong with these things. xD

I left a hate comment there. xD Also, wtf is that Steam Direct, I wonder. Another way for them to get more money? o.O They're a joke, a f@cking joke.
Following that, we'll talk about Steam Direct's publishing fee, and how we're approaching that decision.

We should do some basic checks to make sure the game works, and we now do that on every title - but not insert our own tastes as a filter between what developers want to make and what players want to play.
Translation: we now at least check if the supplied EXE even starts up, but beyond that, we don't give a shit even if it is a copyright-infringing asset flip.
As much as the online conversation is dominated by indie titles, there's a huge audience of players who just want to buy AAA titles.
Translation: shit, we don't have that many exclusives any more because we are getting known as the store with the thousands of indie shit.
The problem with black box algorithms like this is that it's hard to know when they aren't working as intended. Did we not show a game to a player because the algorithm correctly guessed that the player wouldn't be interested in it? Or because there were other games it thought the player would be more interested in? Or just because of a bug?
Translation: we actually always showed the newest and most expensive games and hoped you can come up with a made-up excuse from the listed ones to convince yourself it actually had some real reason behind it.
We had similar problems in the Dota 2 matchmaking system, which was also a black box algorithm. We found that when we better exposed the data around the black box (in that case, the matchmaking ranks of the players), our players understood the black box better, and as a result, were able to better identify cases where it wasn't working correctly.
Translation: yes, we know Dota 2 matchmaking is shit, but we made up nice explanations on why we never really did anything about it.
So we're going to do the same with the Steam Store.
Translation: errr… they will do the same to the Steam store.
We want to show you more of what it's doing and why - and we have some features planned to help with this, starting with one we're launching today: an algorithm section on game pages that states why the Store thinks this game will (or will not) be interesting to you.
Translation: we made up even more vaguely-sounding bullshit excuses to push expensive games on you, and now they have nice and colourful badges around them!
For instance, knowing that a particular friend or curator likes or dislikes a game might make it clearer whether you'd like it.
Translation: gods, we really hope the Y generation is really as much of a flock of sheep who follow the opinion of some internet celebrity persona instead of making their own choices as the latest US elections indicate…
Hopefully this post gives you a better understanding of what we're trying to do with the Steam Store.
translation: I have written 1500 words so far without any actual meaningful content or telling you anything solid. As you can see, I work either on the marketing or the HR department.
In our next post, we'll be covering the ways that bad actors have been gaming the Store algorithms to create revenue for themselves, which confuses our algorithms enough that it starts serving customers less effectively. We'll cover some changes that we believe should tackle the problem.
Translation: We were kinda struck with a few money-laundering and other assorted charges, so I guess after 3 or so years we might as well start pretending we actually care. By the way, did you know that you can sell CS:GO items for 1800 USD on the Steam market now?
Following that, we'll talk about Steam Direct's publishing fee, and how we're approaching that decision.
Translation: Yes, we know that this is what everyone talks about, considering this is where Direct will fall or not. But we don't tell, because the average mental age of the financial and marketing department is 3. We are sure that not telling the core financial aspect of our new venture will make it especially alluring to our future partners, who just love being kept in the absolute dark.

my bad, before steam was the reference where big tittle were like cs, tf h-l and many other.
All other store has only few game (compared to steam) but are not indie game (origin ->ea game, uplay->ubisoft, etc ) or focus on a thing gog ->retro.

Actually, EA pretty much moved all of its stuff to its own store and UbiSoft seems to be less and less enthusiastic to put things on Steam when they have UPlay. Then again, they will be even less enthusiastic if Vivendi buys them out, ruins the company after they pumped out every cent, and lets them wither away. Also, Bethesda softworks now has its own launcher.
But the real issue here for Valve is amazon, because they made a similar platform for Twitch, and it has its own share of games now, meaning there is a platform that can break a Steam exclusivity.
After all, if you are a large-ass corporation, which one would look better: the privately owned store that doesn't disclose any marketing data and has a few hundred million users, or the global commercial conglomerate giant with an operating revenue exceeding the entire video game industry, a user base in the billions, and who uses a platform to sell games which is centered around pretty much providing endless free advertisement for said game with as many daily active viewers as Steam has active gamers.
If the Twitch store and app wouldn't be a bucket of piss in user interface and usability, it could actually start doing its work. (Right now it is practically an adventure game in itself to find out how to buy a damn game on Twitch, and an even more interesting puzzle game to find out how to start the damn thing. Granted, Steam when it started was a complete mess in its UI as well. To be frank, it partly still is. Big Picture mode can look kinda nice though, aesthetically.)

You forgot to translate "blackbox algorithm" as "something we slapped together in the usual half-assed way without proper testing/trial period and without adding metrics gathering to let us know it actually works"
If your algoritm is a black box to yourself, you done gone fucked, plain and simple. You need to make sure your data is correlated correctly, and that your results are in the expected range.

In what world do customers compete for digital goods? And there is absolutely no conflict in two customers wanting different products. Bleh
Comment has been collapsed.
In the world where Valve overplays the importance of targeted audiences as a means to distract us from their avoiding addressing that they continuously go against the things consumers actually want [eg, the ability to freely gift games to family members and friends, and not have to deal with gifting policies that screw the consumer over at every turn].
Honestly, I can only hope GOG takes this opportunity to explode, and continued efforts with GOG Galaxy and Connect will finally see Valve knocked down to a position where they actually have to put real consideration in when dealing with their customers.

TL;DR: we want to sound friendly, so we will add a wall of text here...

Yep, now store page doesn't always show the number friends that own it. I found it useful before. They just keep fucking everything up.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I think it was much better before the change, this is more like a removal of a feature which showed you the list of friends' avatars, replacing it with a number instead.
Considering how they wrote a 1k word essay for a change they can explain in a few words, I don't expect to see anything useful or reasonable from them anymore.

35 of your friends want this game. If you enjoyed it, consider buying it for them!
If only I could Valve ... if only I could -.-.

Don't worry, the act of considering isn't limited by a 10% margin so it's all good.

I'm a most generous person, I considered buying a Steam gift for everyone in Australia.
I hope they all enjoy their virtual gifts XD
