TL;DR: If my second-hand 3D VIsion 2 Kit works, I'd like some suggestions on what games to try it out with.

Years ago, I got the bug for playing PC games in 3D. I had found a product online that, if you had an nVidia-based GPU, and a CRT with high enough refresh rate, you could use these active-shutter glasses kits to play in 3D. I bought a (used) high-refresh rate CRT explicitly for this purpose, and then I couldn't find the glasses for sale again. Eventually, I let the dream go.

Fast forward to this year, when I bought (with the help of some gift money) an ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR -- a 27 inch, 1440p monitor with 144+ Hz refresh rate, G-SYNC, and of course: nVidia 3D Vision compatibility. Unfortunately, nVidia discontinued 3D Vision support this year, and it took me a while to find a 3D Vision kit for a decent price.

So I got one used, and it came in today. The glasses are charging as I type this.

From what I can find, two of the more common suggestions for 3D Vision games to play are the first 3 Arkham games and Tomb Raider.

Of course, there are many games that can be modded (something called the Helix Mod) to work as well. I look forward to seeing Sanctum in action like this, even if it is kinda old.

EDIT #1: The setup works! But there are quirks. Some games don't have proper SLI support (even nVidia's stereoscopic 3D test, apparently!), and I didn't realize that would be an issue. So when running the nVidia logo 3D Test, Arkham Asylum, and a modded Rocket League, I got results that were constantly disorienting--I can't even describe it. I could see the system worked, but I got really bummed to think that my eyes just couldn't handle it and that this was all a waste of time. Well, the good news is that it's not me, and there are workarounds, even if it's inconvenient.

Results so far:
Batman: Arkham Asylum works fine if I turn off SLI.
Batman: Arkham Origins works nicely with SLI. (two GTX 970's in SLI, and a third one for PhysX--heck yeah!)
With the Helix Mod, Rocket League works fine with SLI off.

EDIT #2: I'm not sure what made it work--probably using nVidia Profile Inspector to adjust the global settings, but Arkham Asylum and Rocket League both work with SLI now. Yay!

Lol. See, I was the opposite for a while. I knew they were for games, but didn't know if they worked with movies. From what I've heard, PowerDVD should allow me to watch 3D content with this hardware.

I played the Tomb Raider reboot with mine a few years ago. That worked really well; I think that was the most impressive experience I had with them.

I think I played the original Watch_Dogs with them, too, but my video card at the time had trouble keeping up.

I think my friend said he liked Red Faction with his. I'm pretty sure it was Red Faction: Guerrilla.

I'm not a fan of 3D glasses myself - I don't even care for them for movies - but hope you enjoy yours. If not, at least you'll still have what sounds like an awesome monitor. :)

Thanks!

Yeah, I've only seen movies in 3D twice--once was at some Muppet-themed attraction at Disney World when I was a kid, the other was Avatar. I don't even remember my thoughts on seeing Avatar in 3D, just that I thought the film was fairly lame. Here's hoping it doesn't give me headaches!

My friends were ranting and raving about how awesome Avatar was in 3D - such that they had seen it multiple times - but when I went to see it... Well, setting aside that it's a mediocre action movie (Unobtanium? Seriously? Though it did have gorgeous backgrounds and settings - I felt like it would make an awesome setting for a video game), I forgot that I was wearing 3D glasses about 10 minutes in. The only time I remembered about the 3D was in the action scenes, in that the action scenes looked fuzzy and blurry in a way I wasn't accustomed to and I wondered if that was due to the 3D (I meant to watch the movie in 2D to compare, but never actually got around to doing so).

I think years of playing video games and first-person shooters have trained my eyes to automatically perceive 2D presentations of 3D worlds as 3D, such that I when actually watching 3D movies I quickly forget that I'm watching a 3D movie. The exceptions being movies that have things jump out at you - which I find annoying and just pulls me out of the movie - and Up - which used the 3D effect exclusively to go into the screen and add depth to everything and may be the best use of 3D in a movie I've ever seen. It's the only time that I felt 3D actually added to the visuals of a movie, but given how good Up is in general, I don't think the 3D effect makes it significantly better.

I tried the 3D effect with many games on my 3DS, but I almost always turned it off after a little bit because it either introduced blur or ghosting, or eye strain, or just didn't provide enough benefit to make up for the increased battery draw or the fact that I'd have to re-focus my eyes every time I looked away or moved the 3DS. Like in Bravely Default I thought the 3D effect was great in the towns and dungeons, but I felt it made the battles blurry and introduced some ghosting, such that I ultimately left it off. I think the only game where I kept 3D on for the whole game was Kirby Triple Deluxe, and that was because 3D was used with restraint to add depth to the levels and thus looked good with no issues. I think it's telling that my experience with a console with 3D in the name was such that I found the 3D to largely be a gimmick and turned it off after half an hour, but loved the console regardless for the great games it offered.

Anyway, I hope you have a much better time with your 3D adventure! :)

I know Doom 3 BFG supports this because it stares me in the face every time I go into settings, Shadow of Mordor also

Last game I played completely in 3D mode and enjoyed doing so was Trine 2 (oldie but goldie I neglected for too long until earlier this year). Not over the top "in your face" effects and decent amount of in-game control for intensity and eye separation.

That was another title that kept popping up in discussions about 3D Vision. I've never played it, but it never looked like some great game.

I'm gonna install it now.

i know shadow of the tomb raider supports 3d. i tried it out on my 3d tv but it really bogged down my system and instead of lowering my graphics, i decided to just play in 2d. some of the assassin's creed games might support it, i know they did back on the ps3 at least. oh also, at least one of the sniper elite games i'm pretty sure can be played in 3d.

Well, shoot, I don't have Shadow of the Tomb Raider yet. I will try the original, though.

I found there are fixes for SE 2 and 3 for 3D to work properly.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is by far the game that worked the best out of all the 3D Vision supported games. I tried a lot of them but none worked as well that one.

Interesting. I've got Asylum, City, and Origins installed. Of the three, I'm torn between playing Asylum or Origins first. Origins has a benchmark, so it's easier to see the effects of tweaking settings. But I assume Asylum is easier to run, and it's one of those games that's been nagging me to finish it.

I haven't tried the other Batman games so I can't vouch for them being any good in 3D. Asylum was one that was heavily promoted with the 3D Vision glasses back in the day though and for good reason (I think it came with them at some point actually). It was the only game that I ever had zero issues throughout the game.

It just had something about it, not too many HUD elements (those are really annoying in 3D) and the fact that you always had the character of Batman in front of you at a comfortable distance meant your eyes didn't get tired either. It was just pleasant to play through. Something you sadly can't say about most 3D Vision titles, but you'll find that out soon enough I bet. :P

How well a game works in 3D or not varied quite a bit from title to title.

I've heard Just Cause 2 was amazing with stereoscopic 3D. The explosions and projectiles flying towards you.

My brother loved that game when it was new.

I'll install it!
