Which JRPG did you enjoy the most or sink the most hours into? It can be any system, not limited to just PC.

Super Mario RPG.

Yes, I'm serious, I would rather play Super Mario RPG (a game that I thought was both fun and funny) than Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 7. Xenogears would take the top spot, had the second disc not been unfinished (it really hurt the overall impression I got of the game).

SMRPG is a great game. A shame Square didnt make more in the Genre with the Mario license.

Sorry, let me clarify. I know there are other rpgs. I have EVERY Mario rpg. What I meant is Square(now Square-Enix) only made Super Mario RPG. I wish they made more than just 1 game with Mario in it.

I've played (and beat) that game so many times, I really love it!

Why wouldn't you be serious? It was right at the peak of Square's golden years. Sure it's a bit more family friendly than most of Square's other efforts due to all the Mario stuff but it's not any less of a masterpiece.

+1 Square's making 3DS exclusives for Nintendo but they don't bother with SMRPG? Maybe one day.

That would probably be final fantasy 8, several playthroughs getting everything in the game :)

Dragon Quest 8 on Playstation 2. Hands down, my favorite. Talking about it makes me want to dust off the old system.

Did you know they have that for smart phones now?

I did know that, but there is no voice acting and that is a must have for me even with Trode's ridiculous voice.

Dragon Quest 8, followed closely by Legend of Dragoon.

Legend of Dragoon is very underrated, it has a somewhat cliche beginning but if you keep playing it embraces you with its potential.
I loved the combat system and the story.

FFVI and XIII, probably. Both over 200 hours. If I ever had found time to do another run in Chrono Trigger, it may have surpassed those two, but I chose to do another run in FFVI instead.

I'd also say FFVI. I love the Steampunk elements and the overall gameplay is just great.

FF VII without doubt

unlike some people i know i thought VII was so much superior compared to VIII but could be just me, idk. i found VIII somewhat disappointing and its story was a bit too cheesy too, especially since i was in high school back than and well, ofc i was into manly things (like hydras and bears) so too cheesy or cutesy stuff was a no go :P

VIII was considered better for a few years, but nowadays people deem VII the best, but largely because it was the first Final Fantasy they ever played. Those who played the franchise for longer or met the series late enough to start with the remakes of the 8/16-bit ones, usually rank it high, but not at the top. It's like how FFIX gained a lot in popularity and standing in the past years, even though at the release it was met with lukewarm response.

Thank you for saying things in my mind. FF series is the base of modern JPRG style and where most cares for graphics etc. I care more for storyline. Having played most of FF series, I liked FF VII best because of the Gaia concept.

Awwww, its not so bad. Sure some people don't know it, but Suikoden does has a nice fanbase and the music is actually a bit wider spread even if some people don't know the origin xp

(Also hey, Suikoden IV is much more underrated and hated. And Suikoden III never made it to Europa.. Considering some insane fangirls in my country, it might have been better for V not to be released here too XP)

I can't just narrow it down to a single one so I'll cheat and pick the best from three subgenres.

Turn-based: FF9
Action: Resonance of Fate
Strategy: Shining Force III

Suikoden II
It's the game that started my love for jRPGs, it was perfect when I first played it. The story, the characters, combat system, music, recruiting over 100 heroes to your team. I loved how it wasn't just another good vs evil story, but just two sides fighting for their own people.

Second spot would be Shadow Hearts 2 or Shadow Hearts: Covenant in some region.
Again great music, characters, story and really fun and simple combat system that I'm surprised noboby is copying. There are some really crazy and funny scenes, while the ending have one of the biggest plot twists ever making everybody go "W-what... wow... really?"

Third spot goes to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne or Lucifer's Call in some regions
Great dark rpg, when you can be a badass half human half demon protagonist using demons to fight for you. It's like pokemon for adults where you can collect all sort of demons, and fuse two together to obtain even more powerful demon. I've fallen in love with Shin Megami Tensei series because of this game.

Honorable mentions: Radiant Historia, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Persona 3 & 4, Fire Emblem series (I think you can call it somewhat jRPG), Xenosaga and Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Tales of series and probably I'm forgetting about some other good titles.

FF IX overall. yep.

  • Best tactics: Tactics Ogre

  • Best Sidescroll turnbased: Valkyrie Profile

  • Best series secondary to FF series: Tales of series

  • Best on... naaah, i could think of any best of, but all the title would pretty much overlap. Anyway, i hope they release more JRPG titles on steam.... :(

Currently playing: FF I

  1. Final Fantasy VII
  2. Final Fantasy Tactics
  3. Persona 3
  4. Xenosaga
  5. Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga I & II
  6. Xenogears

FFVII is the first JRPG I played, Tactics the first game where I cheated with the action replay because I was a total noob, I really appreciated both at the time. Persona 3 was quite something, and the first of the SMT I played: excellent plot and mechanics, but the endgame wasn't really challenging. Xenosaga was the most complex, spanning 3 chapters and a really convoluted (nontheless enjoyable) plot. SMT: DDS was fucking nuts. Xenogears was incomplete, and it never released in Europe, so I had to play it on a emulator years after its release.

Honorable mentions: Parasite Eve 1 & 2, Vagrant Story.

Fun light-hearted story, endearing characters, one of the best battle systems in RPG's. An excellent game that still holds up. I wanna play it again just thinking about it.

Final Fantasy XII (I may be weird but XII is my favourite FF)

I'll never understand why people like FF7 that much. I got bored pretty quickly ;-; *runs away and hides*

To answer the question though, I don't really have a favourite. I remember playing FF3 a lot when I was younger, so that one has got a somewhat special place in my heart.
