I only use Linux but I often look at Windows giveaways to see if there's anything that will run with WINE. To do that I currently have to go to my account, click "Giveaways", change the filter setting, then click "Save". When I'm finished I have to do the same again to switch the filter back. It would be great if I could change the filter easily from the main page, for example with a drop down box at the top of the page.

Core changes need to be mostly universal in benefit, as well as offering decidedly more benefits than downsides, as anything which doesn't fufill that criteria can be better addressed by scripts. As your proposed change would negatively affect users who don't make regular use of that function (by cluttering the main page), it's very strictly something only suitable for scripts. Moreover, as it's just a repositioning of existing assets, it should actually be a rather simple script change to work up. As such, it's both better suited for and readily accessible to being handled by scripts.

Another aspect to consider is that cg still has quite a few long-standing [high interest, clear benefit, no clear downsides] feature updates that he hasn't addressed, so something as niche appeal as this feature wouldn't necessarily be compelling even if it didn't come with a downside. Given how very many "customized tweaks" are out there for specific interests or outlooks, the benefit of utilizing scripts is readily highlighted, as such customizations are really what they're best suited for.

"can be better addressed by scripts"

What do you mean by "scripts"? I can't see how scripts enter into interaction with steamgifts.com. I am a programmer.

I ain't programmer, but even I understand that it's just filter, so script could handle it perfectly :)

There's also violentmonkey, though I believe it still has a much smaller userbase than the other two.

I see. A browser user script would require the OS information to be present in the web page which it doesn't seem to be. Also I'm not sure how one would implement a switch that is active over multiple pages.

The script would simply do what you're asking, and take the form data from the account page and move it to be accessible at the front page. The website won't care what page you're currently seeing, since the command it's receiving would be identical regardless of that.

If you're interested in getting into scripts yourself, any script you download has its code openly viewable and can be easily edited through whichever "monkey" program you've installed. Grabbing a script like ESGST [that being the most feature robust Steamgifts related script, and is easily searchable through the site] and then reviewing how it handles information flow and repositioning can be a good way to get a feel for what would need to be done to move the OS toggle over to the main page.

You could also consider changing this thread [by clicking the green "Open" button in the top right corner] to be a script request, and see if any of the established scriptwriters for the site could spare the time.

I disagree. Another option, which would appease all users, would be an account option to enable or disable the clutter.

I disagree.

It's really not a subjective consideration, so disagreement [without proper supporting arguments] would simply be belligerence. If you feel you have a legitimate argument, then you'd have to explain why the function would be worth cg's time to implement, nevermind also implement additional account options for, over his implementing more meaningful updates. You'd have to also justify why this is worth that effort despite the fact that this is exactly what scripts are intended for and, again, for a feature that's quite apparent in having no benefit to the majority of the site's community .

Ultimately, it'd be a waste of site development resources. And, again, without the additional account option [which in itself is a bit cluttery a proposition, without cg also adding a new "customization" section], it's quite clearly forcing visual clutter and decreased interface efficiency on the majority for the sake of a minority (and likely an exceedingly small one, at that).

I get that scripts are unfamiliar to you and, certainly, in a dedicatedly updated site, you could request any number of customization options. But cg still has far more beneficial (both in functionality and appeal) feature additions that have been lingering for years, nevermind all the core QoL updates that've already been covered by scripts and likely should be pulled out of them to be integral to the site's design. With the utility of scripts at our disposal, it's hard to justify putting such a niche (and, depending on implementation, problematic) feature into the site's development backlog.

Really, give scripts a try- they're quite handy to make use of. ^.^

"If you feel you have a legitimate argument, then you'd have to explain why the function would be worth cg's time to implement"

To be clear, here I'm not arguing for its implementation, I'm simply pointing out an alternative possibility of how it could be implemented if it were to be.

I mean, I basically said "I and others would not like this" [alternatively, "A majority would not like this" or "this runs contrary to proper website design expectations"] and your response of "I disagree" effectively amounted to "No, you would" for that context. The response felt somewhat off (and perhaps even rude), regardless of what your broader intentions for it were.

It really would be nice if cg implemented a full customization tab at some point. It's just not something one'd really expect from a typical site, even one that wasn't as update-starved as SG, and there are just too many higher priority feature updates we're still waiting on.

Even if cg did run along with your idea, it'd probably raise a few eyebrows among the rest of the community in response. Not in the sense of opposing the fact that cg can update the site in the manner he pleases, but in the sense that there'd likely still be some exasperation and confusion over niche features being implemented in place of broader ones that have been waited on for years.

Originally you said

'As ... [ some condition ] ... , it's very strictly something only suitable for scripts'

and I was disagreeing with the reasoning that the condition gives rise to the consequent you stated ('very strictly something only suitable for scripts'), rather than disagreeing with the validity of the condition.

I vote against this, like Sooth says, not many people would actually want to have that so for most people it's just cluttering the main page which should only hold the most important stuff many users need, best choice of action for you would be to make a script or ask someone to make a script for it.

There are multiple scripts and browser add-ons for SteamGifts functionality here: https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/Zevqn/sg-add-ons-registry-list-of-all-scripts-for-sg-update-30-aug

There are a few that do what you ask but they also have other features that you might not want. If you're truly a "programmer" as you say it shouldn't be very hard to figure out what you want to do by using one of these as a guide to create your own script. No one is going to rewrite the entire website for a feature that only a few people might want.

"There are a few that do what you ask"

I had a good look through and couldn't find anything that would allow me to filter by OS. Can you name one or even paste a link? Thanks.

I've tried the ESGST userscript but unfortunately it doesn't work. If I filter the OS on Linux, it shows Windows games.

Could probably train a monkey to do that. 🤔

Though, even a cat or dog will usually be up for helping you with the untying part.
Just gotta not mind the tooth and claw punctures in the shoe itself.. 😕

Well, it's humans you gotta worry about the most, of course. Never know what they're gonna do.
