Wow. So I am new to gaming. It's been less than an year. This is first my summer sale. I bought Hollow Knight, Katana zero, Dusk, The Wolf Among Us, Furi + dlc for like 17 usd. So 5 games for 17. Currently playing Hollow Knight.
And including discounts, here I can buy 2 final fantasy games with that money for games released like 10-11 years before I was even born.

Seeing your comment and other replies how you defend for some weird reasons the price is fine for 6 "pixel remaster" games (that basically won't have any noticeable change), then okay. If you have the money to waste my bad spend, it's your choice.

The Final Fantasy IP holds a LOT of weight. The older FF games are loved and are really good old school RPGs. People will still buy these titles at those prices due to that and SE knows this.

Of course it holds a lot of weight. It's Final Fantasy. I never had the chance to play a final fantasy game and even I know about it.
No one is denying the popularity of these said games. Everyone in this discussion thread, every single user is talking about the price. There are literally hundreds of older games that would make people buy them at any price if they were to get emulated or remade for pc.
"People will still buy these titles" shouldn't be a valid argument. As even if SE sold a 100 limited edition for like 10000 usd, there are most definitely 100 idiots in the world with the money to buy these and will buy these if it happened.

I am not surprised by the price actually, and i wonder why others are, when it's square.. And you could also have compared them with other Final Fantasy games.

Considering my avatar offcourse i would want them, i am not made of money (yet) but i still consider it only because of that pre purchase crap, of a measly 3 songs and 2 wallpapers, really that could have been a full album atleast, but it still could make me bite, while on the other hand they could put it all 50% off next winter sale and even throw those prepurchase bonus with the game anyway.
But those are big if's, so i am on the fence.

Also, Mystic Quest??

I honestly wasn't surprised by the price either. The current versions of 3-6 on Steam are $16 a piece, so I figured that it would be the same for the new versions or a few bucks more. It's a couple bucks more at $18 a piece. I am glad that part 1 and 2 are cheaper at $12 a piece since this is the first time they'll be on Steam.

I'm guessing the new 3-6 won't hit a 30% off sale for awhile.. probably the earliest is the start of next year. 50% off is probably what you mentioned, the next Steam Winter Sale.

I wasn't sure what you were referring to when you mentioned Mythic Quest so I googled it. I never head of FF Mythic Quest before, till now. After watching a youtube video of gameplay, I want it! lol

I'd love to see Final Fantasy Tactics come to Steam. That was such an awesome game. I wouldn't be surprised if they brought these other FF titles: Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Final Fantasy Crystal, Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon and Final Fantasy Explorers

I wouldn't be surprised to see these other SE titles on Steam eventually: Vagrant Story, The Drakengard games(prequels to Nier titles), Chrono Cross, Tactics Ogre, Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Musashi, Xeno Gears and the other Xeno games.

Indeed about the pricing, and we should be happy atleast that we are now getting Final Fantasy 1 and 2 but what i still don't know, and one reason i never played them, is the horrible and really horrible random encounters (offcourse they all suffer that) but with the first ones it was really like step, fight, step, fight. I also don't know how focused they are on mobile adaptation, playing with touch or just the normal way with a controller or keyboard/mouse is and should always be completely different. I really hope they turn out okay.

Thanks, i guessed so too, i think i'll just gonna preorder, i already played 3-6 that were on steam, so not in a big rush to play those (except 1 and 2) but still if they go in a package deal (with some small preorder stuff) ah well, you only live once.

As long as Square smells money and see things to milk (and there is still a lot) then i think it's safe to say those games could eventually come to steam too or another platform, Crystal Chronicles already hit Android, PS4 and Switch, might be a matter of time for steam, just as the Kingdom Heart games will come to steam most likely.

Mystic Quest was something Square rather wished they forgot about i believe that was what a friend told me today, for reasons unknown to me because that whole game kinda slipped me by, i never owned a SNES (one console i need to fix in still getting that).

I grew up a console gamer and had a tons of them so I actually enjoyed the random battles out of nowhere. I didn't get a pc or have access to one till many, years later. I think my love for this type of game started with Dragon Warrior(Dragon Quest original title) that was released on the NES. I can't remember if I played 2-4 though, possibly 2. Those are the 4 that were on the NES. I never played the ones that were released on the SNES or PS2 although I had both of those consoles. SE has released 4 of the Dragon Quest games on Steam, but only 1 is from the main series, part 11. The other 3 are spinoffs(Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2 and Dragon Quest Builders 2). I'm hoping they will bring all of them over to Steam.

If you like the games there's nothing wrong with the preorder if you want the special stuff that comes with it, hope they turn out good. It might be a good idea to wait to preorder till it's closer to launch which is on the 27th just in case they do turn out really bad and you wanted to refund. If I'm not mistaken you can't refund if it's over 2 weeks from the purchase.

Yeah but you have random battles, and random battles, and atleast the very first FF in my memory was really literally step, fight, step fight (and maybe it was a first part of the game on purpose or something i didn't even got that far, i just quit) actually would make them more forced then random even. :p

Well i really hoped on a better lottery win back this evening (atleast the 75), so i probably gotta wait 3 weeks till i got some more money again, even if they are bad, i still would want them (as a ff "fan") i think people complained about 9 too and maybe some others, and even remakes/remasters of other games, people found Square botched them up, don't they let several companies do them? Then you can't hold one standard.

I believe some of the areas in the game did have every couple steps there was a battle. I think it was leading up to some of the boss battles and not the whole game if I remember correctly. I played this back when it came on the NES so I very well could be wrong.

Yeah, even if they are bad I'll still want them. lol

FFIX I don't believe had issues, might be wrong though. I know FFVIII remastered did though due to censorship, the Chocobo mini game being removed and the speed of the game.

I'm currently playing FFIII after a few years break due to an issue that corrupted my 58 hour game save. I went into the Crystal Tower and did everything then backtracked and came out and saved. When I went to play it again my airship was gone and the Tower reset and removed the key so I couldn't open the doors. Basically I was stuck in the area with no way off it and I couldn't progress in the tower cause the key was gone. I hoping this doesn't happen again.

I never got the original on the NES or wherever, and the only one i tried was a rom (not sure what system or version), and it was already at the first few minutes that's why i quit, i thought if that's how you start, i don't even want to see the ending, and i had no money invested there and wasn't a big FF fan yet then. And yeah if we are talking NES then we are that old. ;) And it's been a long long time. Or maybe i just tried the FF1 and 2 Dawn of Souls thing i had on GBA, i really can't remember it, or perhaps both.

Yeah and that's what Square knows and is aiming for at people, they prey on us weaklings. :p

FF9 was an adaption from the mobile version, if you make a game based on touchscreen you can't make it the same as a controller (well maybe slightly) but not keyboard/mouse too. Games coming from mobile games tend to always be more "casual".
FF8 i didn't noticed the censorship, and mweh the whole Chocobo mini game kinda sucked anyway, there wasn't much missed there.
However both versions there remain on steam, what is so odd is they wanna get rid of the old versions from these, people should have the option for both.

Steam version, or console or? I don't believe i encountered it on steam atleast.
That kinda thing really sucks when it happens after so many hours (ah, the old console woes when your mem card botched up).

My first console as a kid was either an Atari 2600 or a Colecovision. We had both, but I'm not sure which we got first. I think my father actually picked them up for himself. Yeah, I'd say we're fairly older lol. I actually think were pretty close in age by something you've said before.

Oh yeah, we are definitely their main targets lol I have some of the games on console put away and I still picked up the Steam versions.

I have IX on Steam, but haven't played it yet. I was unaware that one was ported over from mobile. I didn't even know there was a mobile version of this one.

For FFIII it happened on the Steam version. I couldn't delete the saves and I even tried to delete the files and it still wouldn't delete. It also kept duplicating if I tried to create a new game. I had to contact Square Enix support to figure out exactly what to do about it. I don't recall what they told me as I did it years about, but it worked.

I follow the Cut-Content Police on Steam, it's the reason I actually became aware of the censorship on some games.

For the first version release on FFVIII on Steam they did these: "Censored Content: Gerogero Boss was colored blue and The bloodstain in Ultimecia's Castle Armory was colored green outside of Japan. In EU Selphie's Nunchaku's are called Shinobou. Patch: None"

For the Remaster of FFVIII they did these: "Censored Content: Added a skirt to the Siren Summon. Rinoa's outfit shows less cleavage(pre release info) Patch: none yet. Chocobo minigame also removed. Picture comparison below. Patch: none yet."

Our first was a Vectrex/Milton Bradley (1983), when i was 3, they had these coloured screen layouts you could put on, by that time, it had already even had some speech in games (Spike), and it had the now rare vectrex 3d Imager, the whole thing was a technological high piece in my opinion.
My dad accidently thought i wanted to get rid of it so he put it on a garbage dump, while they easily go for 120 euro these days, i bought another one many years later and they still work, while today's generations of consoles sometimes barely last a few years with all sorts of ring of X issues.
Then we went to a C64, that was our home computer for the whole family, my dad loved to program on BASIC, or you had newspapers print out a whole page of code and when you typed that over, you had a game!
We both goth a new C64 Maxi a couple of months ago, we even bought old c64 books, planning to both try BASIC, but unfortunately he just never got around to it anymore.

I had an atari 2600 from a garage sale sort of thing, but my dad and i were like these graphics are really kinda too old, and i agreed we just dumped that on the garage dump too i think (i know bit of a waste) but a few months ago i did go for an Atari Flashback and an Ataric Vcs it's an console that you can hook up to your tv but you can also put an os on an ssd like linux, steamos, or windows.
But as i can't even scratch a dent on my steam backlog, my consoles are just sitting collecting dust atm, but also the whole cable messes when you only got 1 tv. :p One day maybe, my own house, my own game room... :p

I am from 1 september 1980.

I am very afraid with those upcoming Final Fantasy's they are also mobile ports, and i think even the older 3-6 ones were, but i bit the bullet anyway to get them, even if it's just for 1 and 2.

You showing the picture reminded me of what they did yeah, i forgot about it, personally it seemed minor stuff to me, i mean compared to what some german people get censored for example, when whole parts of games get butchered, then these are minor cosmetics.
But yeah i can understand some could be bothered with it, but that's why they should let us keep the opportunity to buy both versions, just as with ff8.

Oh wow, the Vectrex. I haven't heard that name is so long. I never owned one, but my friend had one. I don't remember a lot about it, except that he put the screens on it. I was looking at the prices on google for them and most of them are listed pretty high, much higher than 120 euro($142) at like $550+ some of the games are $150+.

I never had a C64 and I don't recall if anyone I knew had one either. I don't think I saw that system till way later in life on the net. I was just watching a video of it and saw Wreck It Ralph in one of the games. Fix It Felix JR.?

We're sort of close, but I'm the dinosaur lol

Concerning the new versions of the FF games, I'm wondering why they haven't shown real trailers yet for them since the are already able to be pre-purchased.

The small adjustments made to FF8 doesn't really bother me. Out all the FF games I've played FFVIII was my least liked. When it was released the art style and other things about it just made it feel so different than the other FF titles. It just didn't feel like it fit in the world of Final Fantasy. Looking at it from today's perspective it fits in as it has other FF titles that look more similar.

Without even looking at your proifle i guessed you must have been from the US. :p

The Vectrex and the C64 i believe were not that populair there, especially the C64, that could explain the high price on a Vectrex but i must say i haven't looked at the prices here for a long time, the total amount of games on that system were very limited.
I invested most in getting all the old consoles, and not so much the games (i don't want closets full either) but we had these console fairs and i wanted to go again someday with my dad (i don't got a drivers license), now maybe i have to find some big lot on ebay and have enough money. :p

The older you get, the faster time seems to fly, 50 is already just around the corner. :x

Good question, they got a trailer but you can only see very quick flashes, the rest is just show of them telling look we bring you these FF games with some extra's, and some are already coming out in 3 weeks! so they must have some near finished product.
It's also confusing now since they call the current ones the old version, yet they are kinda the new ones because of the updated graphics, but for them they are the old.

Needless to say with my avatar i thought ff8 was okay, very weird and obscure ending though, but i also choosen the avatar for Squall's sayings that felt relatable:
Why do people depend on each other?) (In the end, you're on your own.) (I've made it this far by myself.) (Sure, I couldn't do a thing when I was a kid...) (I've depend on others, but...) (I'll be the first one to admit that I'm here because of other people.)...(I'm fine by myself now. I have all the skills I need to survive. I'm not a child anymore.) (That's a lie. I don't know anything. I'm confused.) (I don't want to depend on anyone. How can I do that?) (Someone tell me...) (Someone? So I'll end up depending on others after all.)

I am one of those that liked 7-10 most, 10 was back then when you had to buy a new playstation 2 to be able to play that FF because they were still exclusive. i hated 12 on the playstation, but when i got it on Steam it was okay and i finished it.
FF15 i tried 2 times now and still don't feel it, nor could get into it, it didn't feel like FF, i am afraid 16 is gonna be similar.

I really loved 7, 10 & 12. I ended up getting all 3 of those on the first day, but 12 was pretty cool cause I got the collectors edition with the metal case. I've never played the Zodiac Age version of 12 though. Apparently it has a new job system, new weapons and armor, updated magic and a bunch of new modes and features. I definitely want to pick it up on Steam eventually. As far as FFXV goes, I've watched a few streamers play it and I thought looked good. I have a few friends that played it that really enjoyed it so it's on my radar to pick up eventually as well.

Here's some images of the new character sprites. There's also a 30 minute Square Enix presentation video in Japanese that has more about the new versions.

If it convinced me (and i can be stubborn) i am sure you would love the steam version of FF12 too.

With FF15 i could just spend hours (like 10+) grinding and doing quests just in the main starting town (and yes that's your own decision) but there was nothing pushing you further to continue the story like other Final Fantasies, you could even just grind and farm for as much as you like.
And the fighting is so different, in my opinion it should be turn based, and it felt more like an open world MMORPG like FF14 (i never played that) also just going from one place to another, even with a car felt like a chore.
And the characters in FF15 it felt you couldn't relate to them, they were just there, but as to every game, a matter of opinion.

Thank you for the link, but as they do with the trailer, they show the characters (sprites) and then they mostly talk in Japanese about the game without really showing much further about the game itself. The characters looks alone don't make a game.

After seeing a review on Steam I remembered what you were talking about with a battle every step. The area is in the Cavern of Earth and is called the Hall of Giants. Basically every step in this little area is a battle where you fight giants. From what I've read from the review they've removed this area in that dungeon. From what the review said they've also removed the Peninsula of Power as well as spiked titles.

Well i played it a little and it's overall many random encounters too, about each 6-10 steps, just moving from town to town or a dungeon you have to crawl through encounters.

In other Final Fantasies you choose when you want to grind and when you want to progress with the story, here it's unclear where to go each time, and thus you automatically grind, after 3 hours i am already level 18 or something.

Most(part 1 through X-2) of the Final Fantasy games are like part 1 with random encounters and "auto grind". If I'm not mistaken there's only 3(XII, XIII and XV) of the main series that aren't online that you get to see the enemies and choose to engage or not.

It seems that these versions don't have any of the content added to the GBA ports.

On the one hand, we're mainly dealing with filler dungeons. Except... Final Fantasy V's GBA port also had 4 new jobs. And the GBA content is available in the current steam ports of V and VI... which are both being delisted when these versions launch, so that option is being taken away for those who are interested.

How does SE keep screwing this up?

Where did you hear that the additional content won't show up on the pixel remasters?

On that note if they do add the additional content for IV, I wonder if they'll go the DS or GBA/PSP route. I'm thinking the latter, but a former option could be interesting.

They not close. Devs make "almost" original sprites and put them on high-resolution widescreen background place. It is looks like someone wanted to cook "original Italian" pizza, so prepared dough, plastered on the tomato sauce, and just putted one salami slice and one slice of cheese. Technically it is still pizza, but not much people will eat it with delight.
If they want to make pixel-perfect remakes, they need to do it like original ones, but with lager scalable "pixels". And that's all. Or like announced Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D remake.

An earlier article from the same site (and linked from the one you linked) has the best character sprite comparison that I've seen.

https://www.rpgsite.net/feature/11321-what-exactly-is-the-final-fantasy-pixel-remaster-series-here-s-what-we-ve-managed-to-find-out

To my eyes (not having played the games), it's like they took multiple previous iterations and combined them into one amalgam that's not quite as well defined as the originals. imho, the original sprites look better in every case on that sheet.

I'm wondering though, if part of the simpler shading on the new ones is to allow for better dynamic lighting effects, where the old sprites would have had to have it permanently baked in.

Thanks for posting, that's an earlier article I missed.

From what the article stated it appears that it's not just new sprites, but backgrounds as well. Which up till this point many people, me included, thought it was just the sprites and new music that were different.

I just noticed something off in one of the comparisons. The Fighter in the bottom right that says it's the NES version isn't correct, that's the PSX version. The new version looks very close to the Fighter in the NES version.

Will wait until the entire collection is like $15 or so

That'll never happen unless there's a price mistake. Final Fantasy games don't really go beyond 50% off aside from dipping a little bit below that on newegg and GMG sometimes. I think the best we'll see is maybe $37ish for the pack

you're probably right!
it's ok.. i have 1,000 games i'd play before these.
My point was just that they are way overpriced for what they are.
I think I would do the emulators before i wasted $ on these

I would buy this, sadly. Just don't have the money for it right now.

Yeah, not gonna pay even close to that for bunch of games that are 25-35 years old, no amount of facelifting will change that. I got Final Fantasy VII, VIII and X/X-2 remaster all together for about 11€ for example.

Pffff... that's expensive crap.
I'll wait for the remake of FF6. That will be an instabuy.

They will make it episodic, drastically artifically increasing play time by adding unneccesary new mechanics, areas, movies, and filler.

FF7R was insanely slow :( and you only get to enjoy a tiny fraction of the OST and a small part of the OG FF7game. They also change somethings for the worse, in a big way. Like ... nvm, spoilers.

Wednesday coming close!

I really hope they cut down the random encounters, what i played on the gba was horrible, like each step an encounter, and even gave up back then.

In Final Fantasy 1 and 2, there are some areas that are hardcoded so that you do get an encounter every step.

Playing RPGs that were originally made in the 1980s can be a harrowing experience. Those were the days when Wizardry and Ultima were the big two RPG series, and they didn't screw around back then.

Is that with FF1 right at the start? Maybe i didn't push through it enough.

It's my era, but never really played those, was more an adventure gamer until FF7 came.

No it's not at the start of FF1 and 2, but in specific areas of some dungeons.

RPGs that were made in the 1980s are generally hardcore...not for the faint of heart.

Are you referring to Final Fantasy II on the SNES which is part 4 or the real Final Fantasy II?

I've never played the real part 2 before, so I don't know how that is.

No, the original Final Fantasy 2. It was previously released in the US on the Game Boy Advance and I believe the PS1.

It's rather difficult and awkward for a variety of reasons and is typically considered to be one of the weakest mainline titles in the series.

Well it's been years (probably 10-15 years) since i tried it, could vaguely remember it being in the start though, dunno if it was the GBA version specifically (or maybe i tried a rom of a different version), although apparently from the link below the GBA would be the easier one.

https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/3bmu20/started_playing_the_original_final_fantasy_one/
But like the op says there, it did feel like every few steps yeah.

Yeah and people making their own maps even. I wish GOG or Steam would get The Magic Candle someday.

My first encounter in FF1 was with 8 goblins and it took upwards of an hour because everyone kept missing attacks and were weak. I see why games give you a couple levels when you start out for that reason.

Got FF 1 and 2. Gonna wait for a 50% discount for the others in the future.

Just a reminder (for collectors of games removed from sale), after 6 hours and 30 minutes on Steam, you will be able to play the first 3 remasters ( FF1,FF2 and FF3 )

simultaneously with this event, the remasters of 2015(the games were released on Android in 2013) will be permanently removed from sale
FINAL FANTASY V (Old ver.)
FINAL FANTASY VI (Old ver.)

PS: most fans don't like the 2015 versions, if you don't have them in the collection, then you won't lose anything...

I am a fan, and i didn't find them that bad, it's really a matter of taste, and everyone got a different one.
So to say someone won't be losing anything, is also different for each person.

I agree, everything is relative...

I like the Super Nintendo version (the 2015 version has a less successful graphic design)
FF5 SNES vs PC 2015
FF6 SNES vs PC 2015

PS:Being a fan of the franchise, I bought all versions :)

Same :) Although it became some sort of gimmick a friend wanted to get much all FF games by that time, but also gotten a few myself.
I had pretty much all nintendo's but never a SNES (still on my to do list) alas.
It's a shame they don't try to give us as many versions as possible, but Square be (not) Square.

But i never gonna let myself fall for that trap of FF 14 and running in a mmorpg, with all it's fees, hours etc. :p

Eitherway really can't wait for the release in 5 hours, i started to become anxious since a week. :)

I really don't like it when publishers remove old versions of games. Also I guess it has something to do with XP on GMG FF 1-3 are showing as -36% for me.
