So the first thing I bought when I joined Steam was Civ 5. I grew up playing the Civ games, and loved them to death, so I figured I'd just grab it. I had enough money to buy the GOTY edition, and one more DLC, so I did. Now, Brave New World, Gods and Kings, and some other Map Packs have come out which weren't part of the GOTY edition... because they weren't out yet. Idk, it may just be me, but I feel kind of cheated since I wasn't given access to that stuff that, lets be honest, should be free anyway.

I also bought the GOTY edition and I know how you feel, but the "should be free" part is just nonsense.

yea, its nonsense to expect all dlcs to be included in so called goty edition.

also its nonsense to expect a game have less than 400 dlcs. if only all games were like the sims, with their dlc-friendly approach... but fear not, we are getting there.

G&K and BNW aren't. They're full addons, the kind of DLC everybody should happily support if they hate 1$ DLCs.

If you want the game to give you DLC as it gets launched, you should buy a season pass. I bought the Golden Edition that included G&K and every dlc up to that point, and then I had to buy BNW too. I felt kinda bad, but BNW wasn't out yet, so what could I do? Some things you just have to deal with.

I agree with this.
Everything that is labelled "GOTY / Gold / Complete / ..." should be really complete and have every contents and DLC that come with the game.
And if they add new DLC, should be added with no charge for owners of these editions.
But that's just my opinion, devs and editors "work" for $$$ (yep, Day one DLC aren't really extra work)

Yes! And like, it would be one thing if they said, "Hey, if you want all the DLC, just hold on, we've got more coming." Or something, but they didn't. There was no mention of more DLC in the future.

I'm not sure if there were no words said about it either way but it didn't take much effort to work out there would be more expansions. Civ 2 through to 4 all had at least one or two expansions and Civ 5 was their most successful to date (sales-wise anyway) so they weren't going to let that cash cow die that quickly.

As soon as they had the first GOTY, and then later on when the GOTY included G&K but not BnW it was apparent to me they were taking advantage of the "GOTY" tag as it was conventionally used. Make no mistake, TakeTwo/2K Games will milk their customers with no shame.

They shouldn't be free. You payed for the game when the GOTY edition came out which included everything up until that point. Now if they released the GOTY and said all future DLC will be made available then you'd have an argument. But no such disclaimer was made. I do think that GOTY buyers should at least get 15 or 20% off on all DLC released after the GOTY.

This is what you get for supporting DLC-happy publishers. Same thing happened with BL2 GOTY.

Still waiting for a decent UVH 2 DLC discount. At least the headhunter DLC-s are not too big ones to miss - the 4 big story DLC and 2 characters in GOTY - at least the most important DLCs are contained by the GOTY version.

Well, BNW and G&K are huge updates. Not small DLCs like the civ or map packs. They had to put real work into producing them. I got the game for free from 2k and later upgraded for 2,50€ (was on sale) to the gold edition with civs, maps and G&K. Do you think it would be fair if I got the 20€ BNW as well? Just because I bought the gold edition for 2,50€ months ago?
By that logic most game companies would go bankrupt.

You don't need GOTY for Civilization games (the same thing goes with CK2). Just buy DLC that you think looks interesting for you. You don't like vikings and won't play as brutal bearded man with axe? Pass and get another one. GOTY doesn't mean "all dlc included" though :[

GOTY != Complete

If you want a "complete" game with all of the DLC, then freakin wait for it to be released. GOTY means absolutely nothing these days.

I agree that "GOTY" (and all the comparable terms) is getting meaningless and borderline misleading.
I don't agree with "if they release new content, it should be free". No, it's something new that someone developed and they have every right to sell it, provided the "base" game is a complete, working product.

Civilization itself is hardly a computer game anyway, I have tried 3, 4 and 5 aswell and they're just historical-wannabe board games transfered into computer world with ridiculous gaming mechanics where you have to wait several centuries to get a new citizen born or have a fricking library built... I just don't get what people like about the game, the gameplay is very dated, uninteresting and underwhelming

Go with rule of thumb. GOTY edition almost never includes future DLCs.

This is completely OFF-TOPIC: does anybody knows if there's any easter egg on the Brave New World DLC? I thing there's a hidden easter egg about the book with the same name...

GOTY editions are BS now. Civ5 indeed is a good game, but their DLC frenzy made sure I won't buy any of their games.

You should have known to wait for the Super Deluxe Game of the Megennium Edition. It's your own fault for blatantly ignoring the obvious.

^^

with games now coming in GOTY, Deluxe, Complete, Thebestgameever editions ... and rarely any of those having all content released for said game, maybe devs expect us to combine GOTY + Deluxe edition to get everything?

:P

what we really need (but arent aware of it yet) is more prefixes to half arsed collections that most of the time dont include all dlcs. We should make a list and mail it to big publishers, im sure they would like it.

For gods sake some games even have Deluxe GOTY edition... and we still support that sht :/

is it too much to ask for Complete edition to be... well, umm complete?

They are big DLC packs (the equivalent of which used to be called expansion packs). A GOTY edition is just a special edition of the core game to celebrate its achievement and no one should ever buy one assuming it comes with everything or will come with everything.

Yeah CivV kindof went overboard on the whole DLC train. The big expansions are good enough but all the nickle and diming for new factions and scenarios really turned me off the franchise.

It is a goty edition not an ultimate/complete edition. And no, Brave New World and Gods and Kings should not have been free. They are true old-style expansion packs.
