I assume it's like last time with the Piñatas, where you can only get games you don't own (up until the point of owning them all), but I don't see any details to that effect, though.

Since I already have all of them by now (bought them piece by piece) I can assure you as soon as you have all the games available in the pool of stars the "buy a star" is getting greyed out and becomes "gift a star" with a tooltip telling you you already own every game and will get a double (that you can gift) if you buy another.

Tl'dr: you will not get any game you already own on gog via the winter stars

This is actually a great feature but I wish they implemented it for games already owned on Steam as well

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But you don't own the games on Steam; so you're actually buying a totally separate product: a DRM-free version of the game.

And while I get that you're annoyed at having the same game in two places, this problem isn't on GOG's end: it's all of the publishers and devs that haven't signed up for GOG Connect.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

However it is regarding the ownership issue I don't feel the need to have access to some games from multiple storefronts. I reserve these kinds of eccentric behaviours for games I consider really good :P

I'm not annoyed about having the games in two places but rather slightly annoyed about paying money for things I already have access to. I would greatly prefer if they checked for game ownership at Steam before they assign the star games since they have access to this data in my case, that's all.

Also, it's not always on the publisher's fault if a game are not at sale at GOG as I understand it. I've seen quite a few reports where they wont put games up for sales for one reason or another. Most recent case is Opus Magnum

I like GOG, but there are very few classics I'm willing to pay for so even if the mystery game is worth more than the lottery ticket it's too much of a risk.

Wait! Does GOG connect work the other way around, meaning if you buy on GOG, you get it on Steam if it's part of GOG Connect? Or does it just work from Steam to GOG?

Permalink

No. Steam has no real incentive to do it the other way.

Which are a type of scam.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Except that they tell you the type of contents and are more transparent about how it goes down (including when restocks happen I believe). Comparing these random boxes to those of less reputable sites that actively try to pretend they're not just giving away games in bulk that were available for free at some point? That's a really stank comparison.

There is plenty of criticism to be directed at random game purchase things, but these ones are least aren't a scam. If you feel they are, perhaps you should elaborate on where you think the misdirection and dishonesty is.

Except that HRK always spins it to look like a good deal yet heavily pad it with the probability of keys for games that were free at one point. GoG at least offer you a glimpse into how it pans out, and have local discussions to track the content of the random draws (including when they restock their lists). It's a bad comparison.

I got

  • King's Bounty: Dark Side - Already owned on Steam
  • The Sexy Brutale - Already owned on Steam
  • STASIS - Already owned on Steam
  • BIT.TRIP FATE - Already owned on Steam
  • Bad Mojo Redux - Already owned on Steam

Also Hard West as a freebie so not too bad all in all but certainly worse than bundle price :P

Edit: Well, seems I can't keep track of my owned games since I just noticed I already own KB: Dark Side on Steam as well...

Yeah, this is a bit of problem for me. I don't mind so much getting something I didn't expect but paying for something I already own doesn't sit right with me. I wish they would, optionally, exclude already owned games on Steam as well since they have this data through GOG connect

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, it's not a suggestion and if it's not obvious on it's on it should be because it's not possible to trade the star games. I was merely stating that I'd rather want Space Empires than Bad Mojo in one of the stars in an attempt to cheer him up but from the reply I take it it was a rather misguided attempt :P

Well mods don't always "get a joke" but fair enough, didn't know they weren't tradeable.

Also lot cheaper to wait and get them on gog connect. :p https://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/8EDwJk3
