Do You Bump?
Oh. Now I finally know what I've been writing all this time.

definition
It's certainly a backronym association, as bump was used without that association on the internet for quite some time- understandably, given that the basic word means exactly what the action entails:
Bump, definition: To knock, shift, or displace into a new position.
a. to hit or knock against with a jolt; collide lightly with
b. to displace, as from a job or plane reservation
c. to raise (a price, a bet in poker, a forum post, etc.)
d. (Sports) To pass (a volleyball) by redirecting it with the inside of the forearms.

Some examples:
a. I bumped into a chair;
Metaphorical: Fancy bumping into you!
b. The airline bumped me from the flight;
While I expected my temporary management position to become permanent- given my excellent performance over the past few months- I ended up being bumped back down to my clerk position after the old manager returned from maternity leave.
c. The oil shortage caused local gas stations to bump up their gas prices.
The bonus points from my extra credit assignment were enough to bump my test score up to a passing grade.
It's a very similar word to "nudge" [a gentle prodding or pushing]- though nudge tends to convey intent, whereas bump does not (eg, "I nudged the chair" versus "I bumped into the chair" is the difference between intentionally making light contact with it, versus doing so accidentally). Likewise, bumping indicates sudden, brief contact [while nudge is used to indicate a repeated action, or an action explicitly used to get someone's attention] and tends to have more versatile applications than nudge (as indicated by the variety of definitions above).
And, of course, even definition (a) indicates jostling something into a new position [>>], and would work even if (c) didn't exist. Bump really is the best word for the function, which is likely why it so rapidly overtook other early popular words for thread-bumping, like "Up", "Top", and "Nudge", or actual acronyms for the action such as TTT (To The Top).

I will post a comment but I very very rarely Bump. If I do it is usually "Bump for solved."

I see people saying bump all over the discussions, what does it do? I also see people adding there own style to it like "~Bump" or "Buump" which makes detection harder, so I think it is just commenting.
