From Polygon

Radical Heights is entering the increasingly crowded battle royale space with a stylistic differentiator: Boss Key is infusing the shooter with a colorful, cheesy ’80s aesthetic. Radical Heights is also leaning into its murderous game show element — think Running Man or Smash TV. “Cash is king” in Radical Heights, the developer said in a news release. Players will fight for cash and prizes while attempting to kill each other.

“Cash is king” in Radical Heights

Translation: P2W system.

By the way, the Arial font and the baby's first PhotoShop effects in the promo picture just screams high-grade effort and professionalism.

Edit: Oh, yeah, I knew the company name was familiar from somewhere. Made LawBreakers. You know, the arena shooter that has less owners than Overwatch has daily players, and currently is dropping its overall score thanks to a whopping 29% at recent reviews. Definitely a game that was worth to come out of retirement for and one that gives all kinds of hopes towards the next project.

A free to play, Early Access, Battle Royale game with a 1980s theme to an audience that was not born in the same era created from the same people who brought the $30 dead-on-arrival arena shooter that is not even a year old yet (17 Aug. 2017).

As someone who was born in the early 80s, this is the one Battle Royale game I might actually play.

As someone born in the 70s, I like the idea of a game set in the 80s. But I already got bored by their interpretation while I watched the trailer. I doubt that it will do much to carry the game, unless it improves a lot.

Thats the point, its to draw a certain kind of audience through nostalgia, an audience that can drop a nice ammount of money on a single product.
The 80s are everywhere, these days

Yeah. I have mixed feelings about having my childhood sold back to me, but largely I'm happy for it, especially the general aesthetic. Gimme dat magenta.

It will be a bit bittersweet when the focus of nostalgia-sploitation shifts to the 90s.

This could work. The game is free, like fortnite, but it's also on steam (fortnite is not). If it's a good game and the marketing any decent, it could certainly work. The early access version is out tomorrow, btw.

It may not be competing with Fortnite on Steam, but isn't it competing with PUBG?

And maybe even Darwin Project?

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, but those games aren't free. There's a reason fortnite took pubg's spotlight, and that is because it's free. You could argue that h1z1 went f2p and is still failing, but the difference is h1z1 was already dead before going f2p. This move only bought the game a little more lifetime. If this game turns out to be as good as or better than fortnite (not that I consider that game a quality benchmark), then it becomes a real competitor.

Yeah, well. They forgot the part about "being a good game". It's still quite a success I would say, even if only in the short term. 7.5 thousand people playing right now, which is not bad considering the state of the game and the reviews.

Or the sandbox era that we're still in.
Getting so sick and tired of every game needing a sandbox playfield.

There are like only 3 of these yet lol, and plenty of room for some actual good ones.

I'm not sure that's true, with PUBG being the number 1 played game on Steam, there really isn't much space left to follow trends, people already made their choice.
but yeah, they ae out there, Games like the Culling died so hard, i thought they had been released 5years ago.

room for some actual good ones.

As Long as you keep pushing games with no personality, characters or story, there will be no good games ever.
Amazing how a genre that steals from Battle Royale, never actually tried to adapt any of those movies. They could have least done something close to The Condemned (2007)

It looks like a bad UT2004 mod.
Also free to play, battle royale, made from the same devs of another failed multiplayer game, with pay 2 win elements, early access, popped out of nowhere without much fanfare. Basically the perfect recipe for a disaster.

The creation process for this is pretty much the same as for LawBreakers.
Something gets released that becomes very popular (OW/PUBG), then there's something very similar to that game released in a F2P model (Paladins/Fortnite) and is also popular. Then comes Cliffy and releases some generic looking thing into that very competitive market. LawBreakers flopped and there's no way this won't flop. People who want to play Battle Royals are already playing PUBG or Fortnite and with the time and possibly money they've invested in those, it's hard to understand why they'd leave them for something that looks so similar to them. Why always go for the market with such strong games already established. The flop of Battleborn should have been significant enough for them to see it was too much of a competitive market for them to try to get into, especially with so little in the way of marketing, but they went ahead and released Lawbreakers because Cliff was convinced it would sell millions on his name alone, and now he's doing the same.

I see LawBreakers traumatised poor Cliffy into making an even worse idea reality.

Atleast it seems to learn it's lesson that Battle Royale needs to be an unoptimised mess from PUBG.

Someone tell the developers of this game that, in this timeline we live in, there can be no game that weighs 6gb and requires 8gb of ram. It just can't.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Even if you put ALL the game files into the RAM (like Ramdisk does), it still would only use 6GB. 8GB ram requirement basically means game has a terrible memory leak (which it does btw) and badly developed.

Pubg made exactly battle royale what people wanted they earn a lot now its pointless to make more of different battle royales cause everyone will just keep playing pubg or fortnite -.- .. we need something new now that will earn a lot of money for devs and not already something what its trying to be new pubg.

I never saw a Cashmaschine or a bmx in fortnite or lung. why should there be only these two games?

Its not that there couldn't be, it's that they continue following the next trend and expect to be successful this time around.
Not to mention people tend to dedicate more time to this type of MP games and as a result choose whatever is most popular
