Guild Wars 2(if you're into PvP), Lord of the Rings Online(if you want a cool story and are a tolkien fan), Star Trek Online(if you're a ST fan and/or want something sci-fi), Rift(if you want a very well made and free WoW clone). I'm not saying they're the best MMOs ever or anything but they are the MMOs i had the most fun with(Warhammer Online aside since it's dead now) and trust me, i'v played most of them.
EVE Online would be another suggestion if you want something sci-fi and have a ton of free time to put into it.

You still have to pay for action bars, the ability to equip epics, and a few other things I disagree with, but you can also buy these things from the galactic market with credits so it's not that bad.

I agree with action/skill bars, 2 is not enough after some level. But if you pay only 1 time (1 month subscription), you will have 6 bars for 1 month and 4 for the rest of your life.
Also you collect cartel coins by achievements and things (I know it is not that much) to buy some things from cartel market. Lots of cartel coin items are cosmetics but not all unfortunately :/

They do give a decent incentive to get a digipass. You get 100 cartel coins a month after you activate one. Granted it kinda stinks that they charge for it whereas Blizzard gave theirs out for free, but after a few months it will pay for itself and it's an automatic source of Cartel Coins so it's worth getting for anyone who's going to stick with the game at all.

Unfortunately for you, the answer is "The first 5 years of Everquest". But, that ship has sailed and will never be here again. You had to be there, man.

My uncles was a huge EQ player and man it was fun... to watch =(.

Two of my three have been said. My first one is Neverwinter. It's not the best one, but with a friend or two you will find hours of fun if you like the mid-evil style games. Second is DC Universe online. You can be whatever superhero you want. I am a bulky lime green and black super hero with a top hat named Mr. Limes. Superman has nothing on the power of the Lime. This game is also good with friends so you can battle other people's bosses and help with their missions. (You choose your mentor at the start, I think the three different mentors are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. So three different subplots.) Finally and the best if you are going to play on your own is Star Wars The Old Republic. You get to be a Jedi or Sith, and it has actual choices to make in game. It is the best story of the three and will have you eating out of their hands if you are a Star Wars fan. It's even funnier with friends when two of them pick the light side answer to a problem to try and save people and you pick to kill a room full of people "for the greater good."

This doesn't exactly help you find a "good" MMO, but I have to answer- none. From my experience every MMO I've tried has always ended up a massive disappointment. MASSIVE time sinks of repetition and samey-ness- that's what MMOs are. Strategically bloated content to keep you there longer and gain as much money from you as possible through monthly transcription or/and microtransactions. Unless you're REALLY looking for a way to waste time/money, can't recommend that genre of games. :/
But, ok, ok, the "best" (as in- "least bad") MMO I've played was probably RuneScape before it sold out and became Soulless MMO Number 113. Today, can't recommend it anymore.

World of Tanks - it's not too complicated to be called a simulator, but it offers a unique pacing. Things go way slower than in regular shooters, so you can take your time and use more strategic approach. Several tank classes give a nice variety to gameplay (light tank plays very different compared to heavy, and artillery is whole other story). I also love the fact that premium shop doesn't ruin balance - all the premium tanks are usually weaker than their levelmates.

It's all about choosing your targets, knowing your strength and weaknesses, and acknowledging your role in the team.
But yes, it is very annoying when when you're on a freshly-bought tank without any upgrades.
Also, a piece of advice if you find yourself too often in such situations on a particular tank: switch to High Explosive Shells, preferrably with suited cannon. They don't need to pierce armor, so you'll make a little but steady damage on heavies (with high chance of equipment damage) and light/artillery enemies will be one hit kill.

And then there's KV-1S, which can oneshot anything below it's level, it runs like a gazelle and is pretty much impervious to damage. I've spent some time at tier 6, it's embarassing. Balance is a myth, and matchmaking is awful. WHich is a shame, because the game is mechanically solid and is fun to play.

Actually KV-1S is my least favourite tank, because its best cannon takes ages to reload and ricochets off armor too often. I had to switch on HE rounds and 122 mm U-11 cannon with even longer reload time. His brother T-150 was much better suited for my playstyle.

My favorite of alltime has to be Kingdom of Loathing.. it's quirky, browserbased and around for a long time.
Beyond that, i don't know there are so many i have played. But Kingdom of loathing is the only one that i've kept playing for al these years.

I've had a lot of fun with DDO, to the point that it's the only "purely online" game I've spent money on. It has the charm of the Dungeons and Dragons universe, a LOT of customization options, the f2p model is almost fair, there is a lot of content and, most important of all, it is fun to play, from a mechanics point of view. It's been out since 2006 iirc, so it's not graphically impressive; unfortunately, though, the worst problem is management, which often seems disconnected from the player base.
I've heard good things about Guild Wars 2, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet due mostly to budget constraints.

GW2 has gone on sale for 50% off here and there so keep an eye out for those announcements. It's well worth the investment, especially with the constant updates the game gets.

World of Warcraft is one of the obvious choices here. I haven't played it much myself, but I can tell the time I spent there was great and would love to get back into it one day.
WildStar is another title that's coming up soon, I played the beta and it certainly looks promising, it's in open beta right now until the 18th so I'd recommend checking it out (it's free to try but you'll have to buy it once it's out if you want to actually play it).
Finally, and this is just personal taste, I really enjoyed my time in Jade Dynasty. It's not the best MMORPG out there (hell, I even hated it at some points) but I can't deny it always got me back into it and the community (or at least the people I met) is really nice and helpful.

Please list your 1-3 favorite mmo's and why you like them. If I find a game I like I will give away the daily bundle (all tiers under 10$) until the daily bundle is over. If I do not find a game a like but still get some nice replies I will give away just one daily bundle (10$- value) for each good game listed which I haven't already played/thought about returning to.
