Diablo, Dungeon SIege, FTL, Final Fantasy VII, Hand of Fate, Omikron, Septerra Core, Valkyria Chronicles, and Ys as "cRPG"? This is the broadest definition of cRPG ever that encompasses hack & slash, rogue-lite, Japanese RPG, and even turn-based strategy mixed with a kinetic visual novel…

Even better, it is a tactical game with a large dose of base management simulator. =D

Computer RPG is a nebulous, broadly defined term.

I think Diablo and Dungeon Siege are very important to talking about computer RPGs, as they herald the introduction of the Action RPG genre.

Likewise, Septerra Core is worth including as it's a Computer-only RPG that sought to bring JRPG elements from console RPGs to PC.

The Ys series was a PC-only action RPG series, then a primarily PC series that was later ported to console. It was only recently that Ys games were made for console and later ported to PC.

I agree that including FF7, and Valkyria Chronicles seems odd, except maybe for contrast, as they are very clearly a console JRPG and a console turn-based, real-time, top-down, first-person, strategy RPG with visual novel elements, respectively.

looks interesting, probably a great reference book.
But from the sample reviews I've read, it suffers from the same issues a lot of such anthology review books suffer from:

1) uneven quality of writing - some of the writers are much better than others, and can make their subject matter practically glow, whereas a weaker writer can leave a great game feel lackluster.
2) opinion-of-the-writer reviews. Some writers are more likely to discuss their own experience playing the game, rather than the game itself. Or they'll focus on their opinion of the standout features, which can dull rather than wow what's unique about a game.

I'll probably wait for a digital edition.
I already have Art of Point & Click Adventure from them (digital only as well).

I'm definitely in. I'm a sucker for fancy books like that and RPGs is my favourite genre.
edit: after seeing the price of the collector's edition, I'm not so sure. I'll take the time to make my mind.

I imagine the problem with this book, and another of books like it, is that it discusses the games that everyone knows about and everyone has talked about forever.
