That's called "being subversive" of a common trope. People do that constantly(and usually when they do it just for the sake of being subversive without actually writing a story based on it, it ends up being clumsy and destructive to the message they wanted to deliver). Just "doing the opposite" of whatever people did all the time only works the first few times, and people have done the "female protagonist in place of a male protagonist" bit for a long time.
