So here is the deal:

I like strategy games. Mostly the old Command and Conquer games.

However, i have Civ 4 Complete retail, and i never got into it. I just can't see the fun in it.

Is it me that's wrong?

Anyhow, do you guys think i would enjoy Civ 5 and all of it's expansions? I have heard soo many great things about it, and it does look different from Civ 4. Is Civ 5 easier and more simple?

What are your opinions on Civ 4 vs 5?

:D

While I haven't played any Civ games other than 5, I can say that I really enjoy Civ 5 and both of its expansions. From what I've heard, they simplified certain elements of the gameplay from 4 to 5, but added some back in with the expansions. My advice to you would be to go back into your copy of Civ 4 and also go to YouTube and watch some Civ 5 videos. The Yogscast has some excellent ones, in my opinion, the most recent session starts here. If it doesn't look enjoyable, and/or you still can't get into Civ 4, I'd suggest you don't buy the bundle.

Turn-Based Strategy vs. Real Time Strategy. They are both strategy. Clearly mkrnic you like one type over the other.. that's ok however to say that C&C or Starcraft don't use strategic thinking to play is absurd.

1 decade ago

This. It may not be strategy as you like it, but it is strategy by most definitions of the term as applied to gaming.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There's nothing strategic in "build a blob of tanks, attack-move enemy base".

If you want RTS, play Company of Heroes (the original), StarCraft, SSoE, even Supreme Commander (though that one is more to the RTT side).

There is no strategy in C&C, just like there is no simulation in Need for Speed.

It wouldn't surprise me if Flappy Bird suddenly became a premium flight simulator in the eyes of some people.

C'mon, that's not fair and you know it.
Its perfectly alright for you to find that the strategic element in those games is too light for your liking, even though your description of it is slighty hyperbolic. To act as if the only games that can be referred to as "strategy" games are those in which that element is present to your liking is ridiculous, even more so when the games you deem not worthy have similar game mechanics up to a point. It's like saying that adventure games must adhere to a multi-verb interface to be worthy of the name, because that's how you like them.

Is Need for Speed a car simulator, on the same level as Live for Speed, rFactor or even the new Assetto Corsa? Or is Need for Speed an arcade racer?

I mean, they both have similar game mechanics up to a point. You drive a car. How different can it be?

There you go.

"You drive a car".

Your words. When a game's main mechanic is driving a car, no matter how crappy the game is, it is a car sim. The basic principle is that you are imitating something in a game. When you break it down to the most basic parts, it is a simulation. No matter how crappy the game might be. Argue about the game quality if you want, but at it's heart, each game has their own basic concept. Build 100 robots. Kill enemy base. That's still a strategy, hence the game is gonna be called a strategy game. Albeit a very minimal strategy based game.

Yes. Yes, they are. Their level of realism is quite different by design, but they both simulate in some manner driving a car. They do not need to be on the same level to belong to the category, nor do they need to achieve an arbitrary "quantity" of realism to be considered so.

Oh the irony.

Starcraft and CoH actually have tactics of building a blob. I think CoH actually calls the tactic a blob as you simply gather your squads in one place and move along in a deathball.

Starcraft II has a lot of deathballing. The 200 pop army usually moves in a small area together. Starcraft I had deathblobs of Mutalisks for example. 2-3 groups together and you kill everything. C&C is strategy and more so the granddaddy of them all. It certainly has tactics and the old paper rock formula.

In C&C, everything counters everything.

Blobs in CoH basically mean GG for whoever is building them. I could go into more detail, but I don't know how familiar you are with the game.

If you are a Real Time Strategy (RTS) player who enjoys games and series like Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, and Starcraft and you do NOT like Turn-Based Strategy (TBS) Civilization IV I cannot see you liking Civ 5 very much. The dynamic of the game is clearly turn-based and the action can happen very very slowly. I preferred RTS to TBS for a long time and totally shunned games like Alpha Centarai and Civilization. Then my parents bought me Civilization: A Call to Power and I started to like TBS little by little.. eventually I fell in love with it and I love both RTS and TBS equally.

tl;dr You won't like Civ 5

Get the $1 tier and give CivIII a try. It's a good game in and of itself. Watch a couple of Let's Plays of CivIV and give it another try.

Focus on the big picture when you play either. Within a week, you'll know for sure if you like Civ-style TBS. If so, you'll have plenty of time to up your payment to get the BTA and $15 tier.

There's a demo of civ 5 on steam, if you get into it, I say go for the bta price.

1 decade ago

Comment has been collapsed.

5 is easier to get into i think, the hex grids help more than they should lol, and the graphics are prettier. but the bta was 9 last I looked and if you want civ v you'd probably want all of civ 5 since brave new world seems to be a big deal for gameplay completeness. (on one hand 15s alot for a bundle, but on another if you're already shelling out $9 15 is pretty close. then agian on the mutant third hand(which is much like the first one) it could eventually be cheaper during one of steam's sales down the line so if you've got a backlog like many people here seem to thats an option/ but switching back to hand #2 thats mostly just because I've already got civ 5 gold, starting from scratch this is a good deal.

You've got 2 weeks and the bta can't get much higher I'd try to get into civ4 and the civ 5 demo.

(side note its not all of civ 5's expansions, its just the two main ones. theres extra bits and pieces not included like civilizations senerios and map packs. and brave new world includes everything important from gods and kings anyway. so gods and kings is basically only a civilization pack like the other dlc now. personally I'd get the base game and bnw and thats it(unless theres another civilization you want in one of the other dlc). which is definately cheaper elsewhere. the game has so many civs to play as anyway)

tldr
You've got 2 weeks and the bta can't get much higher I'd try to get into civ4 and the civ 5 demo. and you could get almost the entire game with only base and brave new world, and civ goes on sale all the time for comperable (or less if you strip it down to necessities) anyway so no real pressure.

if you're still on the fence you could even throw a penny at it to hold your key and you've got a month after it ends to bump that up and buy things if you want it, if not it was only a penny you wasted.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes and you should get the $15 one. Brave New World has gone on sale down to like $12 so to pay $15 for Brave New World, Civ 5 and Gods and kings is a great deal. I hear some people saying Civ 4 is better and other saying Civ 5 is better. I played Civ 4 at a friends house and idk why but I enjoyed Civ 5 more. I'm not picking up anything from this bundle since I already own Civ 5 gold edition and I'm waiting for BNW to go down to like $5 since I really only want it to play as the Assyrian Empire.

personally I would only get the $1 tier, wait for civ V complete to go on sale for $12.49

realize there is an expansion missing if you pay $15 which means there IS missing content, I have confirmed there is content missing with my brother who is missing that one expansion

EDIT: at least I remember there being another expansion, either way all that other DLC is worth waiting for since it can be gotten cheaper than just the main expansions when it goes 75% off

You made the right choice. Civ 5 gold edition(has everything aside from two DLCs an the last expansions) goes for less than the current average which only has the expansion and not the myriad of DLCs. If you already have the base game it is even worse since the gold upgrade goes for like 2-3$.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why? I mean that was pretty expensive overall(the actual price is half that) but this HB only gives the expansions so anyone that wants all DLC will have to pay quite a bit still. Anyone who is actually buying the second expansion or simply BTA is not doing it because it is cheaper.

Well if I had bought this bundle instead for just $2.50 more ($15), I would have got an additional 5 games AND Brave New World.

Worse part is I only played it once so far. Oh well.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What I am saying is that all DLC included in gold edition and not in the bundle are half the price you paid. Just pay 1$ and you get all the other games from this bundle. That you played it once does make it a shame though since CIV V was free a while ago and the gold upgrade was going for 2-3$ before this.

In other words this HB doesn't really change the value of the games really.

hey guess what... i was in a (similar) boat to u, and then I won civ V... no need to buy the bundle now for me :P

(haven't played civ v, so I cant give a recommendation... but if you want to justify the purchase, you could get the V (civ v), for V day (valentines day), and if you win the storyline you could again celebrate V day (this time Victory day).

Civ 4 is probably the best of the series.

I started playing Civs with 2, out of all of them Civ4 felt like it had the best robust gameplay:functional gameplay ratio. Civ5 has a lot of visual improvements at the cost of a highly glitchy experience, some of which are exploits that the developers refuse to patch. I'm not saying Civ5 is not worth playing, I've put 1000+ hours into it, but with glitches like a multiplayer trade exploit that will force me to accept their deal I can't play with randoms online, exploits like being able to abuse science overflow to go from industrial to modern era in a few turns even when I play with people I know the games lose their purpose and become a who can exploit better match.

They're all fun imo, and civ5 is visually great.

if you can't afford that right now but could later you can just pay $1 now, or if you can't afford that $0.01(just that you don't get anything at all until you update it to pass $1) you can increase the ammount from the key page at any point during the bundle's run and for a month after, and as you pass each level you get its unlocks. The only thing is I should mention that it locks the bta at the moment of purchse.(so if you buy it when its low it stays low, if the bta goes down after your initial purchase you still have to beat the high average.)

I used to play civ 3 with a friend and he is so hooked up with 5, he didnt liked 4 either. I still got the complete bundle, first because i dont own civ 3 (legally, it was before i came straight with games), secondly due to the expansions on 5, and lastly, because its so damm expensive in comparison to other bundles, that i expect something big to come up.

But damm, i payed 15 for that one and the next bundle is tomorrow, i think ill starve to death lol.

I prefer Civ 4 over Civ 5 :>

Civ 3 is too old nowadays - you have to edit files for it to even work properly (and I mean Steam version -.-). Civ 5 looks nice, but it's really too easy for series standard :/ They got rid of many complex mechanisms just to adjust a game for wider audience. Civ 4 may look old, but it works fine, is much more complex and so each gameplay varies much more from previous ones.

how can steam justify selling it if their version doesn't run?

when gog sells an old game they manage to make it work, and those are way older

happens all the time, thats why I prefer to buy older games on GoG and new ones on steam. It was not a first instance i encounter Steam game is unplayable - ofc you can mod them, but goG give you all the mods right away and applying some old developed years ago mods to steam can be pain in the arse (for example not running on 64 OS).

So examples:

Mentioned Civ3 - low res not even set to your native rtes - if you are on 1920x1080 on 22" the game screen will be 2 times smaller than your credit card -.- You have to edit game files to disable resolutoin check.

Siberia - totally unplayable for me. Every Alt-Tab or Tabbing to steam overlay ingame breaks all backgrounds - I only see character and clickable objects.

Beyong Good and Evil - transparent textures popping out all the time if you're playing on modern AMD/ATI cards. no fix avaiable.

Just a few examples from games I REALLY loved and couldn't play on Steam -.- And they are still avaiable with all these bugs...

Finally something to do when doing pacifist run and no more stacks of doom that were... doom for any huge map with lots of AI, as you spend 5 minutes waiting for each AI to move their 2000+ units (yes, 2000 per AI)...

Then I will wait for actual price/drop or good sale ;p Cause still for me it's too much - I bought Civ5+DLCs full price when it was later free, gods and Kings 50% off when it's now bundled - and still experience from these games was weaker than Civ4. Not gonna throw another big chunk of money at them now, just because "this expansion finally makes game enjoyable"... I paid them enough already ;p
