i got the base game from GMG, if i am going to buy the GOLD edition, would i get the 'base game' and create a giveaway? or would it just 'update' my current base to gold edition.

No, it includes the Civ V base game but you can't get it separately. I'd strongly advise you to buy the gold upgrade by itself; it is available separately on Steam.
