Going by what I own on Steam or have played elsewhere:
Audiosurf (Music) - The reason I even joined Steam, play any song on your harddrive, many gameplay styles/modes, and I have more time on this game than anything else on my Steam. Probably currently more than all my other games put together.
Bit.trip Runner (Music/Platformer from Hell hybrid) - though I'd wait for a sale, I don't know if I got quite $9.99 of enjoyment because I'm too prone to making mistakes.
Dungeons of Dredmore (Roguelike) - I have a caveat here--only if you like the genre. I think there's a lot of interesting content in this game, there are countless ways to build your character, tons of equipment and enemies, and great DLC. This is a little more hardcore roguelike than, say, Binding of Isaac, so it's a little less fun for me, but it's really well done.
Edge (Puzzle/Platformer) - You're a box, and you like to hang out a lot. It's an interesting, colorful little platformer.
Oddworld games (Platformer) - I can't necessarily vouch for the newer ones, but the first two were fun when I played them on the Playstation!
Plants vs. Zombies (Tower Defense) - played a ton of this on my friend's computer, still need to get it for mine.
Portal (Puzzle, FPS engine) - If you still haven't played this and still haven't managed to get it when Valve was giving it away, I'd still say it's worth the $10 for the experience.
Puzzlequest Challenge of the Warlords (Puzzle/RPG hybrid) - If both genres appeal to you, and you haven't already played this on another platform, it's great, addictive fun. The sequel's merely okay, in my opinion.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (RPG) - Another classic game--if you like either the genre or Star Wars, let alone BOTH, and you haven't played this yet, you really should!
The Binding of Isaac (Action RPG/Roguelike) - There's a small chance you might have an issue with the premise or the art direction, but it's a fabulous game with tons of replayablity.
VVVVVV (Platformer, Retro) - It's got the stylings of an 8-bit platformer, an interesting movement gimmick (you don't jump, you switch the direction of gravity), lots of interesting movement puzzles, map exploration that reminds me of Castlevania of all things, and a surprisingly good chiptune soundtrack. I love this game.
World of Goo (Puzzle) - I bought this when it came out and paid 20 bucks, and I still think it's worth that. Very stylish game with bits of humor, and a great, physics based puzzle game.
In free to play, I enjoy playing the free Trackmania Nations Forever (racing) occasionally, but I'm not a huge racing game fan. There's multiplayer and downloadable tracks and junk, though. The FTP comes in mainly with occasional ads on the tracks.
Like a lot of people on here, I do have a small problem of buying up bundles or things on sale and not having time to play through all of them. There are many more games that others have recommended that I own, but haven't played or have barely played, and I just don't know enough to say they're good. And, I don't play a lot of strategy/sim/FPS, so can't rec anything there.
