The time has come for me to buy a new phone. And a smartphone for that matter, which I never had. I hate looking through million of types of phones and never knowing what to pick. So I'd like for you lovely folks to help me. I'll try to make it short and to the point.

What I have in mind:

  • It has to be a Sony phone (unless you're willing to try to persuade me others are better ^^).
  • Iď like for it to have a comfortable way of messaging (big enough letters, ability to turn of auto-correct, etc.).
  • Iď like for it to have an easy and reliable way to use the internet (wi-fi) and browsers.
  • Price around $250/185€.

I really am a noobie when it comes to smartphones. I use my phone mainly for calls, messages and internet. I don't care about the camera, music or whatnot.

Edit:

Holy guacamole, I didn't expect so many replies! It took me a while to go through your recommendations, but since a lot of the phones were over my budget or not even available here, it wasn't that hard to pick one.

Here is my thank mew!

I will close this thread once the giveaway ends.

THIS.
You can't get better bang for your buck at this price point if you're buying unlocked.
Big letters might be a problem, but since it's android, I'd wager a guess that there's a messaging app with an adjustable font size in the Play Store.
Turning auto-correct off shouldn't be a problem.

+1 I bought it some weeks ago and for its price tag it's definitely the best smartphone you can get.
Also the battery is pretty good, mine lasts up to 4 days (minimal use, but with WLAN active), with moderate usage you'll easily survive 2 days (40 hours). The only downside is the limitation to 16GB storage, but than there's the Meenova..

+1 just got one, and except for the screen size (4.5") it beats Galaxy SIII in performance, seriously.

I agree with the Galaxy, I've been a user of the Galaxy S series for a while and my only complaint is the battery life on the S3. Go with the S2

S3 is overpriced and yet not such a big diff from S2

For that price go with the Moto G. It's a great phone for the price,

This. The Moto G is probably the best mid range android phone you can get. Soon available with LTE and SD card too.
The LG L9 II is also good value for money, and the Lumia phones are great if you're not set on android.

If you are willing to try a different phone look into a windows phone. They have a phone (I don't know the model right off) in that price range and cheaper. My phone is the 100 USD one and I love it. It is fast and really easy to use. Plus I can use it fully with my PC and what not. The worst part is the app store isn't as fleshed out as Android or iOS, but it does everything else quickly and smoothly. Plus they aren't just going to just drop an OS, in that you can still easily find official support for 7 phones that you can't even buy anymore. Hope this helps.

PS. I also realized that this will be your first smartphone, my windows phone was my first as well, so it is easy to learn how to use and fun to mess with. Lastly they are mostly Nokia so they won't break on you without you trying to break them.

On the higher side of your budget but Samsung Note 3 is an awesome phone. Big screen that is very good for watching videos etc and gives more space for the letters to be spread out and be big when you are typing. The volume is pretty high so no worries there as it is with some other phones. Camera quality is amazing for both back and front camera with lot of options and settings to chose when taking photos or making videos.

Battery life is pretty decent given the screen size it has to handle. Also there are many utilities that come with the phone that are handy from time to time like smart scroll or smart video where it will pause the video when you are looking away from the screen or the pages of a book will keep moving as you read them (you can stop these utilities any time you want as they do use front camera for that and thus use bit of extra battery.

They have put a totally new type of charger for this but the old samsung and LG ones can still be used though they will be a little slow to charge the phone completely.

Have been using the phone for about 7 months now and loving it completely.

I've had a couple Sony phones recently, they're all great. But so are the other Android phones I've seen with family & friends. So - go to a shop and play with them to get a feel for the size and material.

Given your price constraints I agree that the Moto G is a great phone, with the only caveat that it doesn't have a lot of storage (and no SD card slot). Consider this if you're planning to use it as MP3 player, and/or don't have an unlimited data plan to stream everything...

Like others have said I would definitely recommend a samsung galaxy. I have the S3 mini and it is definitely the best phone ive had.

Honestly, I wouldn't go with Sony phones. You'd be better off with something from Samsung, like maybe a Galaxy S3 or S4, as those are pretty cheap right now, as opposed to the S5. Or, get an older HTC droid phone. Those are really good. I'm currently very happy with my Droid DNA. The only problem with it is that sometimes the Sim card doesn't work, but nothing a quick phone restart can't fix!

Why not the new One Plus One?

Comment has been collapsed.

I'll be short and to the point because I am kinda busy atm but feel free to add me on Steam if you want details.
OnePlus One.
If you are willing to give money for a smartphone, why not get the best your money's worth?
And even better if that happens to also be the fastest and most powerfull one?

For 300$ you get
Snapdragon 801 ( the fastest processor in mobile phone as of yet )
64GB of internal memory.
Big fullHD screen. ( 5,5 inches the same as my galaxy note 2. )

Do NOT be afraid of the size. You will get used to it in the first week and you will never want to go back to smaller screens.

Do some research for yourself about this phone if you want. You will be amazede for what 300$ can get you.

Cheers.

Sony+android is a bad combination.Lots of bugs...I have a Sony xperia P, i am careful while using it, i never dropped it on the floor neither stuffed it with apps to crash its memory ,but it keeps getting freezes. The most annoying thing is that sometimes i have to reboot it to fix it because when i answer a phone call , the phone lags/freezes about 10 seconds..!

I've heard that Samsung phones are way better than Sony ones..!If i knew more about it in the past i'd rather buy a Samsung phone.Check out S3 i think they dropped its price lately ;P

My only advice for less than 200€ is the Motorola Moto G, it's a fantastic new smartphone which come with a quad-core CPU and a great battery (that's very useful, thanks to that you can use the Moto G for 1-2 days before it needs to be recharged unlike the others who barely last until the evening). There're two versions of this phone: one with 8 gb of memory, the other with 16 gb, if you don't use a lot of applications, photos or music you can take the 8 gb one which is cheaper.
If you want to find more about this you can read some rewiews here:

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/moto-g-1199218/review
If you really want a Sony one, the best choice is the Sony Xperia SP, but you'll find it around 230€.

I see you specifically want it to be Sony but, I've got the Nexus 5 and it's a fantastic phone overall, minus its battery life, to me, that's its only real flaw, other than that it suits my every need

I have this: http://www.virginmobileusa.com/shop/cell-phones/samsung-galaxy-III-4G-LTE-phone/features/
It's "old" but still is powerful enough to do anything I want (and I want to do a lot--I overclocked my old phone ~1.5x constantly)
And it's Android, so if you don't like it, modify it from the kernel up and install a custom ROM (I was on CyanogenMod before I had owned it for an hour)
(Edit: of course it has reasonable defaults for everything; you don't have to customize it at all)
Plus it's a cheap $35 monthly cost for data+talk+msg.

Im also a noob, and i didnt have a phone about a year and a half until a few months ago... Hate smartphones, hate the touchscreen technology, i typed 20sms in 3 months cuz of it xD... But, my experience, as a noob, i would suggest the Nokia Lumia 625, cool price, i think its in the price range you added. Why Lumia? Because it was the first smartphone that i could type an sms with no stress :D, rly great sensitivity. Its a windows phone though... Im not using it, its a friends, and i was blasted by the touch screen control
