I mean do you enter most of the giveaways you see for example? Do you have any rules? I only join giveaways for the games I really want to try and the ones I can't afford. I automatically don't join the giveaways for the games less expensive than $20 (not checking the game in the GA other than its price) since I can buy them by myself during a sale or not. Because of this I've joined very few GA's and won nothing since I registered SG. And another weird thing is I have already been blacklisted for 5 8 (can you believe that I won nothing and I don't spam all GAs but BLs keep increasing) times. I am aware that I am not giving high quality games away, and all of them are bundled before. Since I buy nonbundled games for myself for the time being. But at least I am trying to give something and I will continue to give every game I obtain that I won't play. It's just disappointed me. I just wanted to share my thoughts.

I often see users who joined 10k-20k GAs and it made me wonder. I know it's perfectly normal (especially for older users and everybody can do whatever they want) I just wanted to hear does anybody have any reasons/self-rules about it? Not that I criticize.

The most important rule: I need to think the game looks interesting.

For more expensive games/new releases/never discounted:
I need to want to play the game soon.

For games that have had an alright discount:
It must be a game I want to play within a near-ish future, but it does not have to be right away

For bundled games/games that have been on very heavy discounts:
The game needs to look interesting enough for me to want to play it over other games I have of the same type.

+1 on Fnord's consideration for only joining GAs that you have real interest in playing.

If you have not won anything yet, the only reason that I can imagine for blacklist is that someone did not like one of your comments.

It's because my chances are low due to the number of GAs I join and actually I don't care about winning nothing, even just joining a giveaway makes me feel excited. I like to wonder whether I won. My range of favourite genres and games are limited too. I don't play many genres, sport games, 2D RPG's (Evoland, Stardew Valley), most of the FPS games, most of the paradox series and so on. And I accordingly don't join GAs about them. And lastly, some games which are really expensive even with a discount like Warhammer TW can be obtained cheaply, I bought WTW from HB and stopped joining for it too.

Only rule I had from the start: I need to want to play the game.

+1, it has to look really interesting or already be on my wishlist.
500 Entries or less also helps.

Currently going on a purge for my SG, hiding all the shovelware (EnsenaSoft, Back To Basics Gaming, etc.)

It's a game I want to play...what other reason would there be for joining a giveaway? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  1. Group/Whitelist only.
  2. Low-ish entries only.
  3. Only games I really, really want and know that I'll want to try.

I only join giveaways for games I want, and as a result, I often end up like right now with almost 300 points unspent.

It needs to be a game that I actually want to play.

Also, since I don't have a super-duper rig, I avoid the heaviest hitters in terms of system req, even though I would like to play the game. Better that someone else win it :P

I only enter giveaways for games from my wishlist.
As for your being blacklisted, you should just not care about it.

I shouldn't care but I always will when someone blacklists me.
Because if it's something someone did, give them a chance to explain themselves or fix the problem.
Otherwise the problem lies with the person blacklisting others.

I got 19 blacklists. Don't sweat it. Anything you do on this site results in a blacklist.

I know, but I'm the type of person who worries about everything even though it's not shown on the surface.
Only 19? I'm up to 55 so far. There doesn't seem to be a day that goes by without someone getting offended, pissed off, or annoyed and blacklists me.

i enter only for games i'm interested in playing. I already have a backlog, no need to make it bigger without reason.

i join mostly wishlisted games and/or games I know i'm going to play sooner or later. I used to enter in group/wishlist giveaways becayse "hey, i'm in that group!", ended up with a bunch of winnings i didn't really want or a bunch of winnings because "this guy doesn't have 5 entries, let's give him a hand"

i was stupid

Well, first I go through my wishlist section to see if there are any new giveaways to enter.
Then I go to the recommended one to see if there are giveaways of popular games I will enjoy playing as well.
After that I go to the group section to see if there's a decent game with high chances that I'd like to play.
Then I go back to the main page and see if there's a thumbnail that catches my eye and see if I'd love to play that.

Basically I enter games I want to play. Mostly bundles as I can't afford to buy every single bundle I'd like to play.
And don't worry about your blacklist. You will get on them for just existing, there are plently of giveaways you can join.

10k because why not?

I join mostly wishlisted games but sometimes if I see a giveaway in the front page with a nice image I'll check the game in steam and add it to my wishlisted if it looks interesting and join the giveaway

For a while now I've been really restricting my entries. I was already picky before but now I'm even pickier. I'd only enter if it is for one of my top 3 wishlisted games. I didn't even enter a giveaway which was the 4th on my wishlist some weeks ago.

"Do I want to play this game?"

It's that simple.

if i'm not interested in playing a game then why bother trying to win it? doesn't make any sense unless you're only in for the ocd. neither does farming cheapo cards that don't even cover the energy bill while you idle.

The game has to be on my wishlist and even then I don't enter for everything that is on there, only if I think I will play it sooner rather than later.

Wishlisted
Recommanded (and not them all actually)

I mostly stick to the wishlist page and enter things as points permit, prioritizing low-entry GAs and ones for games I especially feel like playing at that time. I also keep an eye on the group page so as not to miss low entry GAs for things I haven't wishlisted but am interested enough in to enter for.

Additionally, I enter low point (1-3P) / low entry featured giveaways even if I'm not especially interested in the games, same for private forum GAs. In fact those are a major chunk of my wins. I need to work on that, maybe.

It changes.

  • In the last 10 months or so - wishlisted games with at least 1000 entries.
  • This month - only wishlisted games that end on March 25, regardless of number of entries.

My rules are:

  1. I must actually want to play the game.
  2. It must have a minimum normal price of $5 (otherwise I'd just buy it if I wanted it).

I enter ga's when

  • I seriously consider to play the game at some point
  • I am optimistic that the game will run on my rig

For wishlisted games only there are just too many points...
