Rust was one of the games Gaben said that I had to play and get achievements in to complete Grand Prix quests. I've had the game for a long time but never actually installed or played it until today. After waiting forever for the download to finish it crashed a half a dozen times before finally loading and another 20 minutes for the "assets" to load up before I could join a server. Less than a minute later my naked rock carrying body was dead and the game crashed again. The whole time all I heard was cussing 12 year olds that would make a sailor blush with the language they were using. I went to their discussion page on Steam and it's been spammed to death by Chinese and every so often there's a post from someone saying pretty much the same things I have said here about the crashing and load times... and the 12 year olds are replying back with "you suck", "suck it up noob", "this game is for real gamers", "your computer is a potato", etc. And one poor Moderator is trying to keep the peace but is getting grief because the Chinese spam bots are out of control and even Valve isn't able to help according to him. Lots of new posts about the game being broken since this Grand Prix started. Obviously I'm not the only one who owned Rust and never tried playing it until today. So many bugs!

One person even went as far as saying that you need a SSD to play Rust. I'm not buying a new hard drive just because a game isn't optimized properly. Mine works fine for my other games. They need to fix their crap. EDIT: In this guy's defense I was just reading the recommended specs and the developers recommend a SSD too. Ridiculous!

If there was a way to get a refund for Rust after all of this time I would. I don't know how people can even play it. In all of my many years of gaming I've never had such a terrible experience when trying to play a game. The bugs are bad enough but the community is what totally killed it for me. It's even worse than when I used to play CoD. I spent a lot of time playing CoD with the sound turned down back in the good old days. I would try this with Rust too if I could actually play it without the crashes.

If you're looking for a giveaway I'm poor right now. I can't even afford to buy any games during this sale. But if you share a similar experience to mine here or have another gaming story that you want to tell then I might add you to my whitelist for a future giveaway if I sympathize with you or like your story.

EDIT2: Well looky here! Thank you for the giveaway Gawrazan!

A very generous Rust giveaway courtesy of Gawrazan with apologies if you think it's a crap game too

I hope that everyone has a great day. Go Team Corgi!!!

my friend gave me rust and he wanted me to play on a full modded server he has a GTX 1080 TI & SSD etc and he says he need to load 35-45min to get into the server but its worth it
i was 2times loading in 30min than i tabbed into steam overlay because someone messaged me and i got disconnected :D
stopped bothering about the game :D

My attention span doesn't last long enough to wait 35-45 minutes to get into a game. Imagine how many players they would have if they would optimize the game and squash the bugs.

Welcome to any online game ever (maybe except EVE). If people are not complaining about the Chinese, then they complain about the Russians. If they don't complain about the Russians, they complain about the little kids. If they don't complain about the little kids, they just turn flat-out the next incarnation of the National Socialist party.

Surprisingly, i happened to find some multiplayer games witth a very friendly community, the last of which was Killing Floor 1. Unlike its rival Left 4 Dead, people were actually willing (most of the time) to play with unexperienced players and share weapons and money. I think the reason was that it wasn't as popular as other games, so bratty kids and other junk people would just flock L4D instead.

I'm not a big multiplayer fan, my most recently MMO experience is Fallout 76 and yeah it had a bunch of stability and crash causing issues it got patched out and is mainly very stable these days. And the game doesn't really have griefers, I think mainly because you can just turn PVP off on your side, but even before I knew about that my encounter rate was probably like 1 in every 10 people would try and kill me, while the other 9 would give me free stuff and try and chat to me, very different type of community there.

Now there is a PVP only server and the battle royal mode but hey you know what you're getting when you play those modes, so if you just play the non PVP focused mode your gonna have a good time with a bunch of friendly people.

As an added note a lot of people have a bad opinion on the game, Fallout 76 is essentially Fallout 4 with better lighting, multiplayer and a thinned out campaign, that's it, it's honestly better than what ESO is as ESO is a generic MMO game with an Elder Scrolls skin, which is why me and my friends have no interest in playing it, we wanted Skyrim with multiplayer, not an MMO with an Elder Scrolls skin.

The games are targeted at different audiences but yeah, just wanted to say that as well :).

It's a shame you've had such an awful experience. I played Rust a year or two ago for a bit and didn't mind it. I think a large part of it is finding the right server to play one. More tight-knit, regional community ones (as opposed to the official servers) are probably your best bet for a good experience. There's plenty out there that take the immersion/roleplay experience seriously for example, or have age "requirements", watchful moderators and/or a kind and dedicated community.
Though, to be honest, since the servers I was in were all relatively low-pop I never really ran into many people, so maybe my experience isn't so representative. It was more of an atmospheric builder/looter survival simulator with the ever-looming threat of running into another survivor for me, rather than a crazy guns blazing, co-operative and loud survival FPS.

Steam says there's over 46,000 playing it right now so there must be something good about it. I think part of it was because of an influx of new people who were there for the same reason I was... to earn points for this Grand Prix game. I doubt it's reflective of their entire community but the people acting out in public and what I heard for the short minute I was alive are probably why the community servers do so well compared to the official ones. If the games bugs are fixed and the load times reduced I might try it again later.

I wasn't even aware it was still Early Access. It doesn't say it on their store page like others usually do.

I must admit that I forgot where I even got the game until I looked at my winnings here just now. I thought I got it in some bundle but I won it here two years ago. I don't know what game I was playing at the time that made me skip and forget about it but now I feel kinda bad for not playing my win until now. Obviously a refund isn't possible.

Sorry for confusing, technically it was released but most games that were in Early Access are bad quality and "release" state doesn't mean much. Ofcourse they addded many features during developement but other than that it all depends on devs. The only good example of Early Access release that I know was Killing Floor 2. There may be more but they're like a drop in the sea. And sure, Rust is still in top something players online, but only because it was unique and not totally broken back in 2014 and many people like sandboxes, building and survival.

I am more surprised you hasn't heard of the toxicity/grieving of the Rust community, just like Dota/LoL, etc. If you manage to play the game you'll probably be hit by grieving which will affect your experience on another level. As far as I know you can have a private server to play the game which is probably the best or you can find good communities, namely on Twitch that plays the game. Its one of the reason I had yet get into Rust.

I'm sad that Kids are one of the reason commonly blamed, I mean does those kids even buy their own PC or games? Although I cannot deny that there's alot of individuals that behaves like little kids. Hahaha. Dont let the experience ruin your gaming experience overall for more than a day, there are more pleasant individuals out there. Have a great weekend ahead! Cheerios, Cruse~

These really did sound like 12 year old kids with Tourette syndrome. If they were adults then puberty failed them.

Kids in the U.S. are spoiled. They play a lot of video games and have no idea of what playing outside or falling and scraping a knee is like. I see kids in elementary schools with cell phones when back in my day we got suspended from school if we got caught using a calculator.

I do understand that there are kids in the community, they are not the only ones at fault since they cant possibly afford to pay the equipment themselves, therefore parents come into play. I understand what you mean totally and agree. I see parents showing toddlers in the strollers mobile videos which is a distraction to keep them quiet and that my sister used tv programmes to keep her children occupied.

Now that my nephew is in his teens he cant keep his eyes off his mobile though there's a need for him to actually have one since his parents divorced and its a way to keep track of him. Though, I do not know who taught him to play games on his mobile. Asked me for my wifi password when they came over, I just outright said No! XD

Although it is a norm now in today's community, I want to encourage you that there are great communities out there like Dont Starve Together. Dont let this experience dent your experience. :D

I see kids with phones in elementary schools now and wonder where we went wrong. They already have enough distractions when trying to learn things without having a phone already at that age too. People say it's so they can get a hold of their kids in case of emergencies but parents did without since the dawn of man and civilization survived without them. What is a kid going to do anyway? Answer his phone in the middle of a teacher giving a lecture?

I often thought about it, I feel the pace of technological advancement is too quick for the current generation. Less than 50yrs ago the pace of advancement was at a slow and stead pace. The internet not only exploded for the social medias but also improve technological advancement together with our daily lives. We as a whole though, society wise did not advance together or could not keep up with the technology.

Technology is often misuse and misplaced. We do not need a new iPhone or Galaxy phone every year but out of vanity that's what we are getting. We do not need all these hundred of games/asset flips each day but out of greed, Valve accepts them. We are deteriorating the Earth at a great speed but you know what, governments do not care, that's how silly humans are.

Coming back to the topic of mobile use, I can think of a few situations that an elementary student will need a mobile for contact. My sibling lived with my parents and I till her son turned early teenage and moved back to her home which was previously rented out. During that time she had a divorce but lucky to be staying with us so the kids do not need a mode of contact.

When she moved back, she's practically a single parent taking care of 2 kids. The mobile can help her in contacting/checking her kids while she is working. Ideally, which did not apply to my sister case, Geo-Location apps allows tracking of mobile users thus keep track of the kids whereabouts. In the case of single parents, it can be a helpful tool. When in emergency or need, the parent can inform the teacher before hand that if the phone ring, its emergency and only the parent or next of kin will contact through that number. Also you can teach the kid to fast dial emergency number but holding a single digit. These are very handy for a single working parent.

Things might be complicated once the kid understand and starts wanting privacy or simply addicted to the device. Personally, I do not use mobile much nor do I look at mobile most of the time when I am outside. I do use PC alot but I am not dependent on it outside. With technological advancement, I feel we are missing out on alot of things, simply socializing physically for example. Being too reliant is bad as you mention so I try to have a plan B and try not to be reliant. Thing about what can happen without the mobile and what I will do without it. My mobile is always on silent unless waiting for calls, when I have a kid, I will most likely train them not to be dependent on technology but my government is going the other way and promoting to be a Smart Nation and pushing cashless payments through mobile apps which in turn makes us easy target for frauds and hacks.

I have an old flip phone. It's my only phone and I've had the same phone number for over 10 years. It's 3G and has no apps or internet. My chin isn't permanently attached to my chest from looking down at it all of the time either like I see with smartphone users. I don't feel like I'm missing a thing. I guess I'm a rare breed. I never saw a smartphone as a necessity, calling it a gadget of convenience and laziness instead. Most people don't even use them as a phone. Texting and communicating through apps seems to be the way today. I prefer talking face to face. It's faster and the point gets across that you can't infer with just words on a screen. Emotion and voice tone says a lot and you don't get that with texting.

We aren't writing on cave walls or making books anymore. In 10,000 years when the aliens show up to visit and we've destroyed all life on this planet there will be few records of the present times at the rate we're going and if we continue to rely on electronic devices to run our lives.

I agree totally with for the 1st paragraph. That was exactly what I was doing until my government ruled out 3G and discontinued the service forcing me to switch to a Smartphone. Which is more fragile, expensive, larger to keep in the pockets. Although I do use it to watch alot of streams and as you mentioned its a matter of convenience. For a couple of years, it was also the fastest computer I have, hahaha. It took me awhile before I got my mum used to the functions of a 3G phone then they took it away.

I really dislike the fact that when you meet with your friends and everyone just sits down and start looking at their phones, pretty pointless. As an introvert, I always enjoyed observing others and their response in conversations.

As a City State, I can understand why my government pushes for technological advancement. However, it seems we are heading towards reliance on technology more than using it as an advantage. When power outage or mobile signals are out which had happened, I cant think of an alternative for the normal citizen to have. Nowadays, the home lines are linked to modem taking advantage of fiber cables, so is the television for cable subscribers for myself. When a power outage happens nothing works at home and you are suppose to have a mobile with you. Convenience for the inconvenience? Things just don't add up and there less paid phones around when in the case of emergency, if you dropped or lose your phone its a big hassle. Its one of the reason, we kept the land line going until they even phase that out.

I like books, the texture, the feel, pleasant for the eyes but I rarely read them. Printing also affects the environment and its highly bio-degradable. Thou I do agree books should still continue be printing. I think in a few years time, I may even lose newspapers here since they had kept reporting losses and had switched mainly to online platforms. If they are not backed by the government, they would had closed down.

There are certainly advantages for advancement, technologies and conveniences. Recently I was sick and practically, I am the one cleaning my home now but I was not able to sweep the floor for a week. Previously my sister brought over a robot vacuum which she isn't using anymore, that helped alot. Indeed we should not only use or even rely on technology as a convenience but always have an alternative. So many times I hear others mentioning that they have no idea what will they do if they do not have mobile at hand. XD

"Rust"?
There is a time when I was playing long ago.
However, the update continued with the delight of the Chinese.
People from the same country as the player population gather to form a village.
You know the result, right?
And, unfortunately, the fraudsters were also quick.
(There are a certain number of disappointing people in any country.)

The global server has turned into a weird and rare zoo.
Is the Chinese bad? No, developer update coordination was the worst.
I think so.

By the way, it seems that some people make private servers in each country.
The world in such a server has a national character.

There will still be some play environments.
Looking for such a group or server would be enjoyable as "a good play for mental health".

The global server is the home of people living in Rust.
Real society? Their reality is "Rust".
If the person who reads this is to play from now on, it is necessary to "be careful about health" and "must lose all 10 times a day".

I never had any real "bug" problems (outside a few problem updates) and I have something over 900 hours. I actually had to take it off my drive and just stop playing cause I was on it too often
Granted as people above said, you NEED to find a quiet server to learn to even play the game on, official servers are the complete worst (like pretty much ANY of these games) filled with the biggest repressed, powerless in real life douche-bags the internet has to offer. They act that way because the world uses them as it's urinal.

Played Rust during early beta just when it was released, was way more playable, like I have potato pc and I was able to play it, then I stopped because I got annoyed by server wipes, they were very frequent and on top of it I played solo so I just couldnt deal with server wipes, it was hard enough to deal with groups and cheaters....

Then few years later I wanted to try game again, have some fun building stuff, and to my surprise I couldnt even navigate menu, I had like 10 fps in menu, I still tried to load to see if just menu is the problem but I couldn't load at all, game got way worse when it comes to performance, sure it got prettier but they didn't optimize anything they added to game, and it doesn't look that nice that you think you would need NASA PC to play it...

I upgarded my pc little bit, so maybe I will give Rust shot again but I expect nothing, especially after checking this therad/comments...looks like whats awaiting me is worst optimization of game ever.

I don't know what it was like when it first came out but it seems to have gotten worse based on the comments about it on Steam. I guess if they're happy then so be it but it would be so much better of a game if they optimized it properly. I'm pretty sure it would have a lot more players too. The SSD requirement kills it for me as well. I can see upgrading a video card to play the latest and greatest game but to recommend a SSD is just laziness by the devs not wanting to optimize it. It's going to take a lot of changes to get me to try it again.

Tbh, I feel alot of games hide behind the need to upgrade your graphics and better graphics instead of optimization. When a game has more details you have more files and to compress and optimize would be a hassle. Also overtime, if they spend time on optimization, they'll lack content. Thereby to offset the need of optimization, often the result/solution to upgrade your equipment so you'll get your content while achieving for the game to run reasonably. There are perhaps only a handful of devs that are proud of their product and continue to optimize for performance.

If you have a good product that runs well but little content, it'll not go far but if you have much content but dont run well, people will still continue to stick with you "hoping" one day that it'll be fixed, imo. :)

There were people with brand new i7 machines with 16 GB or more of RAM and the latest and greatest video cards who were having the same problems. Even with my potato I can play PUBG at 60 FPS with no lags or incredible long wait or loading times. It's not a hardware problem. Their game needs to be optimized, period. As long as it's been I'm thinking it might be beyond the "hoping" stage. Looks like the players have been in the "praying" stage now for quite a while based on their comments.

Of course there were also people with the same specs who have hardly any problems at all. I can't explain that to be honest. All 1400+ of my other games aren't like that. They're either working or they're buggy, not both. Rust is odd.
