+1 - However, Kaspersky isn't just anti-virus, but also anti-script + application control + registry control + firewall. It's the application control which makes it truely the best! Simple anti-virus definitions can get bypassed.

I Wundt suggest to use a thing made by a former KGB agent wich is much loyal to another KGB agent who managed to take the whole Russia under full total control xD

I use McAfee because it came free with my internet and it works, even though it gets irritating at times.

I've heard people describe it as downright awful, though I really have no other choice as I get it for 100% free.

McAfee is, truly, awful. Uninstall it immediately and get Microsoft Security Essentials instead. It's free, and it's all you'll ever need unless you willingly download all kinds of viruses and malware.

Permalink

McAfee is quite bloatware, however I would still pick it over Microsoft Security Essentials - hackers and malware applications love to bypass that Microsoft crap, the firewall does nothing.

How did it lose quality? I've been using it for a couple years, it seems to do it's job. Though I've never tried Avast.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mean it still working, but comparing to other free antivirus, it can't give you protection as others do. Avast was in the same way as AVG is now, but +- recently they've made a cloud antivirus, which gives more and faster protection.
Give a shot to any other antivirus. It's up to you choose your own protection. And make some search, maybe I'm outdated too.

Although the pool doesn't reflect the reality about antiviruses. You should have created 2, one for free and one for paid. I for instance find avast crappy, tons and tons of false positives.

The gui use to be good but they keep changing it up and making it harder, ie burring the tabs, to customize firewall settings and rules. Thats really my only gripe about Kaspersky.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Older kaspersky was actually way more advance, the newer one attempts to hide and make it simple (it's dumbed down quite a bit for noobie/average users)... some tweaking is required but still the best.

I hope, you have an original copy of your Windows = MSE.

Otherwise = Avast.

(None of the other antiviruses can compete with this too; well, there might be some 100-200+ dollar antivirus for companies, but let's not count them here. :D )

Your probably got a RAT or Stealth Trojan - easily picked up via driveby website injection. Viruses these days don't do damage but hide from the user and let a server dump or hacker snoop or even control it. Windows 8 Firewall is quite easy to bypass.

So you do use anti-malware tools still? Your previous comment just sounded like you where blindsided to it. I know a lot of people who believed they wheren't infected or can't be just because they play it safe on the net, etc.

If you're looking for a free antivirus, I'd suggest Avast.

If you're looking to pay for an antivirus, I'd suggest Kaspersky.

I've been using Kaspersky for years and have never had any problems with it. Can't even tell when it's doing a scan.

Kaspersky often is free after rebate. Depending on the deal you can actually be paid to buy kaspersky and other things with such rebate offers. IE, my bank use to give 1% back on purchases from newegg.
