I haven't played it, to be honest, but I am totally over Settlers of Catan. I loved it back in college, but now I'd be happy never to play it again. Maybe I've just played it too much, but now it just seems too slow, too boring, too luck based, too prone to getting screwed over, and with too little actual player to player interaction. I'd rather play Bohnanza any day.

I initially dismissed Bohnanza because of the cover, but it is terrific, and has replaced Settlers of Catan for me. Unlike Settlers you know what's coming up for you so there's more strategy and planning involved, you gather resources every time it's your turn, you trade every time it's your turn, and you plant (aka build) every time it's your turn. And because you're limited in how many different things you can be planting at once, you're almost always trading things you don't want for those you do with everyone else. And every time you trade with someone when it's not your turn, you also get to plant that turn, so it incentives trading with others. As a result it feels like you're always trading, always getting new stuff, and always building. It's constant player to player trading, it's really fast paced, and it's a ton of fun. By the time a Settlers game is over, I'm thinking, "Thanks god that's finally over with." By the time Bohnanza is over, I'm thinking, "Let's play again!"
