I meant some games like "Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons" and I assumed it must be for Steam Deck or something.

Yeah but that game can use any controller as far as i know .
Games can be optimized for controller only play ,yeah but usually they wouldnt limit it to one controller type ,because the amount of copies sould would be very limited to a specific audience and most people would get upset and review bomb
Yeah sorry i meant that having them exclusive to one specific controller brand would be weird*.
If i remember right Valve said that the Steam deck is like a pc (you can even install wndows on it,while it runs on SteamOS (Linux)
searched for the Quote:"It's a PC and it should just play games like a PC." Valve has confirmed that there won't be any Steam Deck exclusive games "

Yeah, you should delete this thread.
There isn't a single game exclusive to steam controller or steam deck.
Comment has been collapsed.
The game says it must be played with a "Controller" it doesn't say which one you need to play the game as it states Full Controller Support so any will do.
And if you mean that the game is exclusively for Steam Deck then I don't see how that's possible seeing that the game was released in 2013.

Thatś not what the requirement means. See my post below.

I finished the game with keyboard. You dont need to have a controller to beat that game.

oh i get what you mean but there is no way to check if someone has a controller because even if they have played games which only work with a controller before no guarantee they still have it or it still work today and i picked up my controllers - sort of fake-Xbox style controllers for about £25 quid a piece in a local retailer (called b and m) in town
edit now that i think about it they are more like Playstation controllers and came from Currys (i have one as said before) = https://business.currys.co.uk/catalogue/tv-entertainment/gaming/gaming-accessories/logitech-f310-gamepad/N054978W?cidp=Froogle&gclsrc=ds&gclsrc=ds

It's not ideal, but when you have a mobile device like Android, install Steam Link. You'll not only get to stream your games from your PC, but it also has a built-in controller support that you can customize on your screen (unles syou have a flip phone, then that would just be insanely impossible). That just basically costs you an existing phone, which would just be a free controller built-in.
I have an F310 myself. I've had an original version of this that was pretty basic D-Input, and at the time also used emulation software that came with it., though you didn't need it. F310s are an upgrade to that with bells and whistles to make it a 360 controller by adding X-Input to it (so it makes it 2 controllers in 1), along with it's built-in XBox button, making it extra. The trigger buttons now are proper rudders instead of buttons, which makes it really nice.

i don't really know the phone thing - i barley turn mine on at all - only if i need to charge it or maybe make a phone call and that's about it - i don't think i'd even know how to add Steam to it - all i know is a bought a cheap controller and it works with the games i play

Modern phones nowadays have been for the last decade been using apps for productivity, playing games, watching movies and playing music. Even as an external storage drive and even a conversion to a full fledged desktop. In this case, all you need to do is download the Steam Link app, sign on to your Steam account and connect your PC to it. That is it. It's not that deep.

Steam Deck has only been marketed for less than a year. "Brothers" is from 2013. It was not made with Steam Deck in mind. There are no Steam Deck exclusive games, it is very unlikely there ever will be, and it would probably be difficult to make one even if you wanted to since the Steam Deck is primarily off-the-shelf components.
Now something like VR-exclusive could make sense, and it hasn't been added to Steamgifts or even sgtools (AFAIK) in years, so I don't believe the community wants these kinds of filters.

"Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons", This game works perfectly on a keyboard. In fact I'd say its best on a keyboard. You control both characters at the same time. One with each hand, both on the keyboard at the same time. This is how its meant to be played. Its a great game. I enjoyed it.

I don't really think it's easy to implement this. There are VR only games too, and unlike steam deck compatible games, they can not be played without a VR headset (I don't know of any steam deck game that can't be played on PC). Yet, we don't have any feature to limit it to VR owners only. It makes little sense since hardware owned by players can change, they can break or be in semi-usable conditions, one may borrow hardware for a particular game, and people can easily lie about owning or planning on getting one. I doubt there's any easy but 100% certain method of determining if the player has a working hardware or plans on getting it.
PS: I am assuming you mean steam deck since as lockcjwen said, steam controller has already reached it's EOL.

are there though? i can't think of any game which ONLY works with the Steam Deck or controller - perhaps some examples please

Aperture Desk Job
Although I don't have any of those and haven't tried this game so I'm not 100% certain.

I don't even have any hate for what the Deck does while I don't have it, and the tech itself isn't new. But yeah, if you're going the route of Nintendo with what they've done with Switch and make the eShop abysmal at that point for example, I can definitely see that being an investment killer. It's a good way to ruin good tech with terrible implementation. I'd just easily use a wireless controller and an android device with Steam Link, and BOOM! A poor man's Steam Deck, because that's what it basically is like.

Steam input allow use of all controller even if don't have support for
Comment has been collapsed.
It seems you meant Steam Deck because Steam Controller isn't in the production anymore. Also, there is no such thing as "Steam Deck Exclusive" since Steam Deck verified means that game can run on Linux out of the box and also tested on Steam Deck. So, it's no use to restrict giveaways for the Deck, there is no point.
Comment has been collapsed.
or planning to have it.
Sounds like an abuse for me. Besides, i dont think there is a way to check it unless if the user shared the data (like filling a form whether they have a controller or not), and people can easily lie for it.
There was even one of my giveaways for a vr game where the winner doesnt seem to have the vr headset but still want the game for +1. I dont think the restriction will do any difference for the gifters in general.

I think he actually means Steam Controller, but he mistakenly thinks the requirement is to have that specfic controller. No game does that. Some games, like Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons, require A conroller, meaning they can't be played with mouse and keyboard.
Comment has been collapsed.
Except that you can. Despite the warning, the game plays just fine with a keyboard.
Comment has been collapsed.
Fair enough, the requirement may be wrong or outdated. Fair enough. Still worth clarifying what the requirement is intended to mean.
Comment has been collapsed.
I was thinking you mean VR games only, but after reading the comments, you mean Controller/Joystick.
I dont know how many games just allow a input Controller and not keyboard, but I dont think that may be a lot of them.
btw, I dont know how SG can "discriminante/Select sub categories in games."
but, would be great to separate adult games from the rest. even if i dont think this can be done.
Comment has been collapsed.
I dont have problems with adult games, im on 30+… but the Valve itself verification of age Is a joke, anyone can put Born in 1910 and go ahead.
even if internet have a lot of Easy acces to porn nowadays, i personally dont think this Is good for childrens. its just my opinion.
one knows that when have kids,... and something happends on germany for this with Valve, so in the future, this can change, who knows

I always tell: parenting leve to parents, valve/Steam is only a shop.

In the GA's description, you could say, "To be valid winner, you must already own a SteamDeck-exclusive game. Make your library public, and tell me in the comments what SteamDeck-exclusive game you already own. If I can't confirm that title, I will pick a new winner."
You could also use Invite-only, and make a discussion thread that gets reused like the anti-ninja and orphan threads get reused.
Comment has been collapsed.
yes but like i said there are none that ONLY work on the Steam Deck or am i missing something?
Comment has been collapsed.
Since when? IIRC "controller" recommended was never Steam only...Xbox works 99% of the time.
Comment has been collapsed.
I understand that I'm a bit late to the discussion here and the issue has been resolved but I'd like to point out that the software support for controllers is really good on Steam, to the point that you can configure pretty much any controller to function like any other input method. Also what most of the games that recommend using a controller usually mean is that the game was designed to be played with analog sticks, the best example I can think of right now is Brothers a Tale of Two Sons.
Comment has been collapsed.
But after all, there are no games created only for steam deck or only for the steam controller (I'm not sure what you mean).
Any of these games can be played perfectly on PC. That is, you think that it is possible to restrict users who can play in the same way, just because?
Comment has been collapsed.
You'll have to trust people look at the games they are entering and make sure they have the hardware to run it. You could also put in the description something like "Heads up: This game requires a controller." But there is no way to tell who has a controller, or a vr headset, or the proper setup to run your game.
Comment has been collapsed.
The game's Steam store page would have the info in their description, but the Steam controller issue the OP is having is not a thing, AFAIK. The burden is on the people entering the GAs to read those descriptions, and there's already ways to avoid running the risk of getting duped beyond that point, which makes the OP's specific point rather moot.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think they mean controller-only games but VR makes so much more sense to me (I've really wanted a way to filter out VR-only games).
Comment has been collapsed.
Steam controller? Any game can run with any controller, since Steam has had for years now built-in controller emulation to use any game, even the KBM-only games. I've even rigged the 2 Switch joycons to toy with Tomb Raider 1, for example. There's no such limitations unless a game strictly can only work with controllers, and even at that, nothing as niche as a Steam controller (again, the built-in emulation is at play).
If you meant Steam Deck, there's no limitation. Games are currently being made compatible with the Deck - it is not meant to be a replacement for whatever device you currently use. They are not replacing anything, actually. Imposing restrictions upon this misconception makes no sense.
Otherwise, certain games that do have certain limitations, like what VR device you should use, would be good beef. But some are clear in saying it's only compatible, not a requisite. The Steam store is very good at labeling things if one took care to understand it. As for me, I primarily use the wishlist generated list so that if I'm not wishlisting games I don't want for things I don't have, it's never gonna be on the list, so I'm not gonna run the risk of anything to complain about. Suggestions revolving around that would be moot.

On topic for OP.
Take ur hate and blog about it

yes, it is. hence, why it's not closed? also I've been around bugs/suggestions category to make sure I won't be doubleing up on an issue already brought up, and it's full of old and/or unrelevant topics... does nobody moderate that?! That's like a prime region of the forums to keep moderated! I know it's not your fault, just venting here since it's kinda relevant, hope it won't bother you too much

There are many games that require a controller, but in those cases any controller can be used (I've used PS2, PS4, PS5, and XBOX 360 controllers on Steam). The Steam controller is just one of many that can be used for such games.

ersatzrod please close the thread since it seems to me your issues were already resolved and now it just causes clutter and pointless necromancy (you can do it by clicking the green "open" button next to your discussion's title and selecting "close discussion) Thank you.

Now there have been a rise in games published exclusively for the Steam controller, I believe that Steamgifts.com should allow users to restrict their giveaways to those who confirmed that they have that controller or planning to have it. It can be implemented in the same what that the region filter is currently used. What do you think?
