I tried the key above in DEFCON demo and it works, it basically unlocks the demo version into the full version.

Not sure if this is exact. As far as I understand it, the keys unlock multiplayer in both games, no matter if you own the full game or the demo version. I might try to find some working keys later since I do own both games. Not that it'd matter too much since I don't really care about multiplayer and it's probably dead in both games anyways. ^^

I too already own the games on Steam, never played them.
From what I understand, the Steam version automatically checks ownership and generates/requests authentication codes (it even re-authenticate new codes each month?)
PS: I'm sorry if I wasted the key posted above, it was for a good cause, the mystery is finally solved :)
I'm curious if you could try to download the demo and use the same key above, see if it's one time use or not, the setup file is small around 60MB

Probably not, since in the Wiki it says:
All versions use an activation key for multiplayer. The hash of the key is sent to the server, which validates it against the metaserver, removing the player if it is bad or is already used by another person in the same game
So authentication is denied only if the key is invalid in general OR if someone in the same multiplayer game uses the same key.
