I was browsing SteamGifts from my phone earlier and noticed a GIF that was playing by default.
At first I thought it's because I had opened that thread before and vaguely remembered opening that GIF but on closer examination it appears all embedded GIFs and images are now running on autoplay. At first I thought it had something to do with ESGST because I vaguely remembered it has had that option for a while but then I realized I'm on my phone so that can't be it. So I checked one of my older threads and apprently the change only applies to new / recent threads.

So I checked the Announcement category and searched the forum for any mentions of GIFs or images but couldn't find anything mentioned about it.

So my question is: Did I understand that correctly this is an intentional, native change to how SteamGifts displays GIFs and images and if it is, what you guys think about it.

I personally don't really care because I have a stable connection and unlimited data plan but people in rural areas or browsing SG on the go from their phone might dislike it.

Do you like that GIFs and images are automatically displayed now?

Yes.
No because my internet connection is slow / I have a limited data plan.
No because there are kinds of content I'd rather not see automatically.
No, for no specific reason but I preferred the old way to display GIFs and images.

If you dislike the change because you often browse SteamGifts on the go from your phone and have limited data there please vote for

Well, this is awkward. I was just writing a reply to tell you that attached images have always loaded in the background so they're instantly available when you click "view attached image". I thought maybe you wanted the images to delay loading until the button is clicked to save data transfer.

But, now I see that new comments with attached images actually have them visible by default, which was not an intentional change and a surprise to me. I updated software on our web servers the other day, and I didn't come across any compatibility issues, but apparently one exists when attaching images, causing the "view attached image" button to not be generated. I'll look into the issue and resolve it shortly, but now I'm curious to see the poll results, because an option to have images visible by default is something that could potentially exist.

Yay! ๐Ÿ˜… I stumbled over something interesting / useful.

I'm not particularly tech savy but if I understand what you said correctly it wouldn't impact loading times for people on slower connections and data usage even if the majority ends up liking it and the change sticks around?

I have two related thoughts though:

Apparently it's currently no longer possible to use overhead text when embedding pictures.
I know it was the most basic kind of puzzle but some people occasionally like to hide giveaway codes in overhead text. Also sometimes it can be useful to specify the meaning of a GIF / image.

If this ends up being popular and sticks around can't it be used for evil purposes? ๐Ÿ˜ˆ
Potentially technically or where my thoughts went first to give people seizures.

I'm probably a very baaad Corgi for immediately thinking of the possibilities but anyway...

Content that flickers, flashes, or blinks can trigger photosensitive epilepsy. Web technologies that use video, animated gifs, animated pngs, animated SVGs, Canvas, and CSS or JavaScript animations are all capable of content that can induce seizures or other incapacitating physical reactions.

I guess?

3. Unsafe content. Products or services that are not credible or potentially dangerous, such as those that could lead to a user's Steam account being compromised, or their financial information stolen. Please do your due diligence prior to posting content or links, and if we have concerns about the safety of a product or service, we will try to remove it from our site or close the offending discussion.

I mean when you post something to kick start seizure in some people it may be dangerous, esp before they realize they can change settings to not see blinking gifs on auto play. So not removing such gifs after people complain or support intervention could lead to post deletion, but it's something we'd need to decide post-factum.

Yeah, I suppose seizure inducing GIFs are already covered by the Rules / Guidelines but when you think about ref links, trading of the forum or begging we all know how much people here on SG love to stick to the rules ๐Ÿ˜‡

Not sure if somebody who swallowed their own tongue during a seizure would care very much if the person who posted it gets a 3 day suspension ๐Ÿ˜…

Isn't it a bigger change that images can now be posted inline? Before all images were landing at the bottom of the post.

And with auto-loaded gifs or images it would be nice to be able to re-size them (BBcode can suppoert it with [img=50x50]?). Big images inline may be annoying even on the PC.

I don't like auto displayed images, but being able to put them inline would be nice. I never understood why they were put at the end. If you are trying to talk about multiple different images in a post, it can be annoying and a bit confusing to have to keep referencing them by saying something like "image 4 below".

In the past there was no image preview at all, so you had to open image in new page from what I remember. But there were scripts to have image preview on hover.

Then there was change, and images were loaded inside the post. But having them load inline would break them. So they were dropped on the bottom. Unless it's some comment engine limitation, that "view attached image" button needs to be at the bottom.

I don't like having images auto-load firstly because gifs are annoying to see and slow down the page loading, and images (and gifs) can be distracting when reading text in posts and comments.

One thing I'd love though is if attached images would not be listed at the bottom of the comment/post, and instead wherever it was included in the post. I'm not sure how possible it is to implement or if it would work out better, but it certainly would be nice to have.

Back in SGv1, people would link images via normal link formatting []() and a userscript allowed for hovering the link to view the image - perhaps keep the current image attachment format ![]() but also add an alternative way to link images with some way to pop up a preview when desired.

I know this is not exactly on-topic at this point, but I thought I'd throw the idea out there while the opportunity is present.

The hover-over was elite, I abused it often.

(Edit)

About the normal / previous behaviour of pics :

I was just writing a reply to tell you that attached images have always loaded in the background so they're instantly available when you click "view attached image".

I think it doesn't work that way in my browser (Firefox 82). After a click on the "view attached image" of a heavy gif (for example, one of 30 MB), the gif is displayed for the first time as a jerky video (probably because it's being downloaded at the same time) and then it starts to play smoothly (probably once it's fully in my browser's cache) - so in my opinion it is downloaded the first time it is displayed, not before. Having said that, there may be another explanation, I am not an expert.

I realize the moment for comments has passed on this... but why must this be only one or the other?

Why not make it user configurable? A checkbox or radio button:

Auto-display images: Yes/No.... On/Off

I quite like it (PC user 99% of the time). Makes reading/browsing topics faster. Less clicking, and no more clicking images from the bottom one to have your cursor ready for the image milimeters above.

One of the benefits would also be that images can now be posted inline half way through a text but on the other hand I really have to fight my better demons not to post a seizure inducing GIF like right now.

Loooollll. Good one :D

When we migrated from SGv1 to SGv2 cg took ability to make inline images and gifs, and people were unhappy. Now it looks like it's back?

Anyway it works like that only in discussions, they are not on autoplay in GA comments.

Edit: Now I see it works like that in new GA comments as well.

I don't think this will stick around for long...

It's just not humanly possible to constantly do that. I've checked repeatedly when somebody posted ref links or trades (which need to be removed quickly or the damage / gain is already done which will only encourage more people to do the same) and sometimes just nobody from Support is around.

And the possiblities to fuck with people are endless ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I don't always like having things perpetually move on my screen. If GIFs are to be displayed automatically, I'd prefer a way to pause them (like some social media sites will pause a GIF when you click on it) or minimize them.

For me, it's not about content or bandwidth, just the constant motion. Well, it's OCCASIONALLY about content. :) That's my two cents, anyhow.

As long as this also leads to us being able to put images between lines of text, I'm all for it.

I don't even mind if we won't be able to collapse images anymore.

EDIT: Okay, I give up; how are you all doing this?
