If someone's account was compromised it means a number of things. Most likely is, yes, it's his own fault because odds are he essentially "gave" his account details on the premise that he will get a free game based on no solid grounds.
However, that's not the only way to hack accounts. Some people are simply unaware of how to secure their computers. It does not mean the the person is 'stupid'. It just means that he's lacking in knowledge when it comes to IT security. Those such as myself who do understand them live their lives without ever being hacked, but that knowledge is something not everyone has or understands.
Edit (20 secs later): Also, no one is ever truly invulnerable to security breaches. Ever.
