So I have heard that Australians have had quite a few Steam price glitches over the last year. But I also found out today that you people have USD as your currency on Steam. So how does it work? Do Australian folk have the same prices as those in the US? Or is it different? And if that is the case, how do the glitches happen?

I'm a Kiwi instead, but I can answer your questions. Australians do use US$ prices in the Steam regional store. Some games will be listed at the same price as the US release, while others will be listed at a higher price. The games are individually priced, and so some mistakes can be made when they intend to do a Australian special price, same as price errors in any region.

If you can call it a "glitch" some games seem to list even higher than the US price - so a game might be $59.95 USD for Americans and $79.95 USD for Australians. Also known as the "Australia Tax" where publishers charge extra (because they can).

The glitches are when they intend to do that, but put the wrong number in. It happens some times. Like when they put a 1 instead of a 4 and we got something for US$19.99 (way back when NZ and Aus counted as one store region).

Well, Oz is in the middle of nowhere, in the ocean. Shipping costs must be high.

We always get ripped off in the price department.

Example:

  • DOOM - $60 USD on the US store | $80 USD on the AU store.
  • Battleborn - $60 USD on the US store | $70 USD on the AU store.
  • Call of Duty: World at War - $20 on the US store | $40 USD on the AU store!

It's a joke as we already pay in USD & not AUD. This is the reason why I now avoid buying from Steam if possible. I've even started buying from the grey market as a direct result of our jacked prices.

Time for traders :D

I'm already on your friend list, and here in New Zealand, I'm not getting conned of all my cash on the Steam store. Just some of it. Though I'm sure I can't beat the off the back of a truck prices. :P

NZ is the cheapest ROW region in most cases now, so not getting conned is an understatement… :)
