To be honest, I think I wouldn't be able to give a proper answer since I'm not as much into videgogames as I used to be, but it's properly that major studios draw more attention to them and have a wider audience. They spend more money on advertisement and promotion. They get more reviews and are featured in print magazines. Thus they get more backlash than indie devs.
I also think that indie devs are in a position that allows them to have more flaws. People are more forgiving if it's only one to two guys. Of course there are a lot of examples that stand against this arguement like FEZ and 99% of everything on Greenlight, but even Jim Sterling who hates most indie games said in a gameplay video that FNAF would always have something new in each game, doesn't even talk negatively about the jumpscare aspect, which basically makes the entire game, although he often says how cheap jumpscares are when it comes to making a good horror game.
Well, that's my amateur opinion on things. :D

That's exactly what it is. Popularity = Overrated. Look at the number of positive reviews.
Agree to disagree I guess.
Comment has been collapsed.
Overrated - have a higher opinion of (someone or something) than is deserved.
Popularity - the state or condition of being liked, admired, or supported by many people.
The key word here is deserve.
FNAF is a game that is made by 1 person, who made 4 games in 1 year, adding new elements every time, and an interesting story that is completely unique. It's not overrated nor underrated as far as I know.
As for the reviews, it's just a much of dank memes I'm reading.
Comment has been collapsed.
Considering something as overrated is subjective. I can also go by definition and a game being popular means it is praised too highly in my opinion. Being featured on YouTube adds a lot of hype that can ends up being nothing but hot air.
You are actually overrating it right now. Just because it's made by one guy that shits games like he ate indian food doesn't make it any special.
As I said agree to disagree. I'm really tired of discussing this. No offense.

From what I've heard he wanted to stop with the third part? And the fourth one was sort of forced because of the movie deal etc? I don't really follow any of this, so those might just be rumors, I don't know.

Yeah, on trades. I edited my post at the beginning and I can't see any star.

I agree. the art style is great, but I found the gameplay so-so.

I'll have to look that game up. I wonder if it had a hand in Limbo's inspiration.
Comment has been collapsed.
Agree with Limbo.
The style was neat, I like the silhouette design. But the gameplay was all about timing and precision later on and I don't really enjoy that.

Limbo is a nice game, but is so MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH linear

Limbo
Super Meat Boy
Volgarr the Viking
State of Decay
Surgeon Simulator
Comment has been collapsed.
Agree with Surgeon Simulator, but Super Meat Boy is pretty damn good.
Comment has been collapsed.
I liked State of Decay. Felt like it was lacking in some areas though. Managing the community never really felt ... important (in the story mode at least, haven't played much of the dlc). Was also annoyed about the re-release a year later ... stupid game ... would not have bought the original version if I knew they were gonna pull that.
Comment has been collapsed.
State of Decay was published by Microsoft how is that indie?
Comment has been collapsed.
I was going to say the post said "Overrated" not "too difficult" but then I looked at your playtime and achievements, very impressive that you got all of them in Volgarr and almost all in super meat boy. However, I don't understand why you'd spend so much time playing games that you don't think are good.
Comment has been collapsed.
I didn't say they aren't good. I said they're overrated. I completed all the worlds I could without dying in SMB. After that it was just torture so I stopped. Volgarr gets extremely easy if you watch a walkthrough. There's this one guy on youtube who did all 3 ways of finishing the game and I basically just had to copy everything he did, because that's what the game is about, memorizing.
Comment has been collapsed.
i would definitely put SMB in a higher tier than the others on the list, there is more to a game than the actual in game experience, it's the whole package, the music, the art, the fact that the dark worlds are a more 'metal' version & the music seamlessly changes when flipping worlds during level select, the massive homage to super mario bros & how it eased the player into learning new mechanics or saved the princess (i didnt finish it either), the difficulty scaling over time, the instant respawn like trackmania, the replay view that you can use to help yourself, the controller input (tommy tweaked it for many months), the menus, animations, everything, it's a complete work of passion & intelligent design, that's what makes it great (i dont just want to say 'to me')
basically, the essence of SMB is what all devs should aspire to, it's similar to valve's when it's done, it is a great case study so in that sense i dont think it's overrated but it's not like i went out to find reviews, i gathered all this just by playing (you dont have to be good at it, or play more than a few hours, or even like the genre, simply understand what it's about & how it got there)
limbo & surgeon i can agree, they could have a bit more oomph or variation (especially surgeon's music!)

Very good points. All I can say is, despite the bar of dedication the game sets for developers, I still think the final product isn't the perfection most seem to think. But your arguments are all true, and contrary to you, this is just my opinion =).

Look at the title. It says indie overrated games, not indie awesome games.

So...the games that were in Indie Game: The Movie?
Comment has been collapsed.
Oddly enough, I never watched that movie.
Perhaps the increased coverage from the movie led to increased expectations (at least in my case) and thus disappointment when actually playing the game.
Interesting to see that quite a few people disagree with me on naming these, while quite a few agree with me as well.
Also a lot of games I really disagree on being named. I thought Banished was effing gold. Bastion too, wtf.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, the movie definitely brought a lot more attention to those games. Those games being selected for the movie were probably based on expectations too. Of them, I've only played Fez so far, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Limbo
Super Meant Boy
Thomas Was Alone
All good games, but I feel like they didn't live up to their hype when I played them.
Edit: I have never played Five Nights At Freddy's because it looks boring and pointless. I may play it some day, but it doesn't look like anything that would interest me.

+1 I bought it pretty cheap but I just didn't like it and I got bored within half an hour

Basically every single one that relies upon jump scares as its main gameplay mechanic. That, and idle games. As far as I'm concerned, just about everything else is a YMMV situation.
Comment has been collapsed.
Gonna stick with games I've played that, for me, did not live up to what I was told or expecting from the almighty indie game gods (and thus the reason I hate hype). I'm also trying to stick with more well known games with a decent number of reviews. Anyway, here we go:
Lifeless Planet
Zeno Clash
Banished
The Forest
Race the Sun
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Organ Trail
Year Walk

I don't know ... everyone told me how amazing it was and that I have to get it. When I did get it and played it, it was fun and it's a good game. I just didn't think it was nearly as good as people were telling me it was. I could just be biased as these types of games aren't really my forte, so please take that into account when considering my list.
Comment has been collapsed.
I liked Year Walk very much for the fun little experience it is. Before I played it I did not believe that a 5$ title would give you a full narrative experience and still have the budget to use a nice visual aesthetic and sound design. Year Walk proved me wrong.
Comment has been collapsed.
I understand it is not done. I'm also going to stop you right here. I feel like you may want to start an argument, but I did not post my opinions in this thread to start an argument.
(NOTE: I don't think a game with 30k positive reviews is underrated.)

If you're trying to be funny, it's not working, not for me at least.
Comment has been collapsed.
I semi-agree. When playing solo the game is boring as a pile of rocks. But when you team up with some friends the game becomes amazing.
Comment has been collapsed.
My feelings towards it are switched tbh. xD
Whenever I play with friends they just want to do some stupid thing or the people on the server I'll try to play on will nab all of the amazing stuff while I'm asleep.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, I have never played with a server of people. But when I mean I play with friends, I mean friends I know IRL, not random Steam friends. And we just progress through the game together, it is really fun. We stopped playing it because we started to not have enough time. It guess it matters what friends you have.

I agree, I was extremely dissapointed with The vanishing of Ethan Carter, I didn't realize it at the time but I had played another very mediocre and similar game a few months before called Murdered Soul Suspect. The only difference being that Ethan Carter looked a little better.

I have yet to play either BoI although I have the first. I've heard great things about them and I enjoy rogue-likes but it looks infuriatingly difficult and I have a low tolerance for that kinda of thing. Hence why I wouldn't even buy Super Meat Boy for $0.74.
Comment has been collapsed.
I prefer the first one. I played it a lot and it's a great game. The second one was just a mere excuse to make money on the acclaimed brand.
Okay there are some improvments like some new enemies, but meh... It doesn't explain the reason to make a re-make only three years later with excuses such to don't use Flash anymore, using a more pixelated art style like the McMillen always thought since beginning, and basically nothing more.
But that's my opinion. Opinion that everyone thumbed down on my Steam review lol.

+1
Never got hooked on the original, but LOVED Rebirth.

+1 It's normal for gamers to like or dislike games for completely different reasons and for me the aesthetic is simply too offputting, same as Dust: An Elysian Tail.
Comment has been collapsed.
Its not a bad game at all, I actually enjoyed the game but it isn't some amazing puzzle game. The puzzles weren't consistent in my opinion. There are easy puzzles and difficult annoying puzzles.
Comment has been collapsed.
Trine is actually "playing" a fairy tale. Try to play it thinking about that, listening to all the speech and such. Puzzles and monsters (and difficulty in general) don't really matter, it's really like an interactive tale where everything from background music to artworks brings you to Trine's magic world.

Very much so
Edit: Actually, since Microsoft owns it now, I'm not so sure. It was originally, though.
