Should we be able to use emoji?
Steam is a gaming community. Steam supports emoji. Your logic is wrong.

Don't you go bringing logic into this discussion!
Comment has been collapsed.
No, you a talking about smiles, it's completely different. Go to wikipedia link on my start post, copy emoji and paste it on steam - it's just works. And it's free, too.
Comment has been collapsed.
Why not add emoticons? People already shitpost their cancerous memes from 9GAG and fill the forums with reaction images which contribute nothing to the thread. Might as well add a more reliable mode of emotional expression, one which doesn't involve the sort of intellectually vacuous content one would expect to find on KnowYourMeme.

Well, the matter is in users, not in emojis. Look,,,, I CaN Wr1Te Lik3 Th33s!!!&&! Should we remove letters too? They look retarded.
Comment has been collapsed.
You know, we are not making science here. And yes, many people do stupid post - because it's funny. What is wrong with having some fun? Or you believe that games and giveaways should be serious business, and we should not fool around?
Steam supports emoji. How many of them have you seen recently? I haven't seen them for months! Why would you think that sg is quite different and there will be too many of them? I don't see any logic in your antipathy.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, this is discussions after all, so we discuss)
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not a discussion when you call all arguments against you "invalid" when in fact you are using logical fallacies to force your point of view on everyone.
Comment has been collapsed.
You calling my arguments "logical fallacies" to force your point of view too. So, looks like we are in equal position.
Comment has been collapsed.
It doesn't matter. It's a cancerous meme for shitposters and vacuous children alike.
Comment has been collapsed.
What you want to do in that situation is remove numbers and capital letters.
Comment has been collapsed.
No need, it's just what should be done if we dont want retarded things like "I CaN Wr1Te Lik3 Th33s!!!&&!" in the forums. Removing all letters is unnecesary.
Comment has been collapsed.
It sounds like you're implying that the forum doesn't already look like it's frequented by the mentally handicapped. At least emojis are a stable and reliable, integrated form of expression. At least that way, people might not have to rely on cancerous memes and reaction images from their preferred 9GAG/Cheezburger site in order to shitpost.
Comment has been collapsed.
They are funny only to children and those unfamiliar with Internet culture. After seeing the birth and death of countless memes, and the abuse and exploitation of old memes by cancerous tweens, one grows tired of the "le funneh xD TROLLFAEC #huehuehue" bullshit that pollutes the Internet. That shit was funny nearly ten years ago, before idiots began stealing the inside jokes of certain sites and proliferating them across the web as their own. Where is the humor in it? A random perusal of the front page of 9GAG, will exemplify just the sort of vacuous, lowbrow, uninspired and unoriginal excuse for humor I'm talking about. It's all regurgitated, recycled, and reused to the point of losing any and all quality or humor.
Most memes, especially those commonly exploited by cancer, are like hearing the same joke for the umpteenth time: it kind of gets old after a while, and after the hundredth or so time, you are considering murder-suicide. Likewise, cancer sites are shitting grounds for the Internet's uninitiated and immature, wherein lowbrow is highbrow and fart jokes are the favorite of the royal throne-goers.
The addition of emojis would provide a streamlined method of emotional expression which performs better than would any reaction image or attached image. Moreover, it helps to reduce traffic and trackers by keeping them hosting in-site. The only downside to emojis would be their overuse, but seeing as that's already a problem with image attachments and just about everything else on the forums, I don't see how that's really a suitable argument.
I wouldn't have to ride a high horse if the ground wasn't covered in so much refuse.
I know you aren't in the mood to argue, and I respect that. I'm still going to respond, though. Feel free to ignore this or bookmark it so you can scold and correct me another time.

That's a thought-terminating cliché and a fallacious argument that contributes nothing to the discussion and misleads the reader. "Funny" is subjective insomuch as it is a trait that depends on the observer or participant's reaction and enjoyment of the phenomenon; however, humor and comedy can be objectified and measured along certain standards. I'm not denying that the content may be "funny" to some; what I am stating, however, is that it is a low form of comedy of little to no intellectual merit. Most memes, especially those enjoyed by cancer, are lowbrow.
My criticisms are not directed at the banally obvious fact that whether something is funny is dependent on the person; rather, they are directed toward the quality of humor and material being used, and how the lack thereof reflects poorly on those who find it entertaining.

Well, since you're obviously not willing to participate, I challenge anyone else to take up this discussion and point out any errors in my thinking.

That is a yes, they are, but sometimes can tell a story and are used in good fun. Why does everyone need to be so debatable and wordy when there isn't much time left in this world to be.... I will never understand Humans.

I didn't say you have to post an essay and I don't mind the pictures, at all, personally. I mind that attachments are overused instead of direct links and my concern is mainly due to mobile.
I've stopped browsing the site when not on wireless on mobile, since I have a data cap on it. Text and links are fine but I don't want to randomly have to load a chain of 50 gifs that people decided to attach, just to check out what a thread says.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes. I do relate to that. It can be annoying. Specifically on a mobile device. Overbearing and most of the time not even worth browsing. Mobile again, as data rates will suck the life out of your wallet and time for loading.
Comment has been collapsed.
I never thought about this that way. I'll keep my gif-posting urge down. But sometimes it's stronger than me
Comment has been collapsed.
I'd prefer an essay over a vacuous *.GIF any day.
I complete sympathize with your sentiments, Rinarin. It's frustrating how willing people are to abuse features.

Oh god, that show was SO freaking funny!
But still, I don't care about emojis, polls and gifs are enough for me :]

I want everything in binary!

Because people like minecraft, and it's all about squares!

Gifs require traffic, emoji - don't. Gifs require special formatting to insert them, emoji - don't. Gifs can't be used in the middle of text - emoji can. From any side of view - emoji is better.
Comment has been collapsed.
Except emojis aren't actual characters. For the forum to support them, it would require extra parsing and a bank of pictures, one for each character, and that would require traffic.
Comment has been collapsed.
Gifs do not require any added traffic as they are not hosted, rather linked. Emojis would need to be server side to be used when triggered. I rather prefer not seeing images unless I click to see them. But it is whatever. I am just a braindead Zombie, nibbling on some breakfast brains right now. Also I can't reply right, sorry Zomby2D. :(
Comment has been collapsed.
Gifs only require traffic from the client side. Since emoji support is vastly different from one platform to another, they would require parsing and replacing with pictures on the server side, adding traffic on both ends. Unless the 2-character codes would be send as-is, without converting to images, but then not everyone would see them.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nope. Actually, NOW forum parsing them out, so supporting emoji will do LESS load on servers. As I already mentionet - it's just characters. I can paste them in windows notepad, okay?
Look like you don't understand what emoji is. And still judging.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's unsupported characters that do not render correctly on many platforms. Just taking Windows as an example, it requires Window 8 or above to render correctly. Under Window 7, if I parse emoji characters in Notepad, all I get is squares.
Comment has been collapsed.
By the way, to all "No" voters - if this option wins, I'll create another poll to disable on forums letters "a" "e" and "w". And you would have to vote Yes there, or else - you are hypocrites!
These are entirely different from emoji. And trying to control what we vote in a poll makes the poll a bit pointless, doesn't it?
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't control you! You can be a hypocrite if you want to - it's completely your choice.
And no, there is no difference between emoji symbols and letters. It's only parts of unicode.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, and there is no difference between you and an amoeba or a rock for that matter, it's all just a bunch of atoms. There is a reason for this site allowing Unicode in general, since the members are from all over the world and they might want to use their letters and I would be the first one throwing a movement #OccupySG if there were just ASCII table. However, there is no apparent reason for this site allowing an umbrella. (nor banning an umbrella, I must admit. :))
Comment has been collapsed.
There is a difference between a mammal and protozoa. There is no difference between "F" "Ф" and "$". And, there is no difference for emoji also. There is no apparent reason for this site to forbid an umbrella. (oh, I see you already added this :-) )
And, by the way, is this ^_^ or this :-) are better than emoji?
Comment has been collapsed.
Personally, ASCII emotes annoy may way less than emoji.

That's not an emote. That's a ASCII "art".
Don't try to convince me that emoji are oh so great compared to ASCII emotes, because you'll be wasting your time. :P

Oh, alright. Sorry, I'm a bit of an asshole lately. :x
Comment has been collapsed.
I haven't seen a false equivalence being used around here in a while.
Comment has been collapsed.
So, what is the difference between a unicode symbol and another unicode symbol?
Comment has been collapsed.
The fact that emoji characters aren't part of unicode and are mostly unsupported on many platforms?
Comment has been collapsed.
Tell me, what OS do you have? Are you sure that MOST people have same OS? I doubt it.
And, by the way, if someone would not see it - it's not a problem at all.
Comment has been collapsed.
Windows 7. I'm pretty sure it's the most common OS out there.
And, by the way, if someone would not see it - it's not a problem at all.
You're right. As it is now, we don't see it and it's no problem at all. Having ugly boxes show up in the middle of the text would be problematic though.

So Firefox includes a partial emoji font, good to know. I still wouldn't use that clunky, slow piece of software for something as useless as emojis though. The only reason I keep it installed is for testing purposes.
Comment has been collapsed.
And you wrong again. It's a system font. I repeat - I can use this symbols in notepad.
Comment has been collapsed.
Funny, because I just tried copying from Firefox to Notepad and guess what, still only squares.
Comment has been collapsed.
Emoji weren't supported before Unicode 6. That's a huge difference.
Comment has been collapsed.
Letters show up correctly on every platform, emoji don't. That's a huge difference.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ты попробуй буквы из какого-нибудь экзотического языка напиши - тоже у половины не покажутся, потому что шрифтов нету. Плохие у тебя доводы.

No, my argument is good. I can see Russian characters just fine since they are part of the supported Unicode standard and are present on most systems. Tout comme je peux écrire en français avec les caractères accentués, parce qu'eux aussi sont supportés.
Comment has been collapsed.
Seems you didn't read why your arguments are invalids. You know, there is no even one font that support all unicode characters. I mean, the ones thats letters from different languages. Of course, cyrillic symbols and diacriticals sings are common, so almost everyone can see it. But there are less common languages for which you would need additional fonts.
Comment has been collapsed.
I can only get so much from the automated Google translation. :P
But to be honest, your original comment only consisted of the letters "a" "e" and "w".
Comment has been collapsed.
But this letters are disgusting! We should get rid of them! After all, we still can use а е and ш
Comment has been collapsed.
Technically, a true statement can still be an insult, or at least insulting, under certain circumstances.

You don't like squares? It's politically incorrect!

So, today I find out that forum parser cut out all emoji from the text. I mead - we don't have smiles, and it's okay, but emoji symbols are just like all other text, why are they not allowed? Is this on purpose or just a bug?
