Here is what I am trying to understand. For a GA with a key entered into SG, what does the winner of the GA see once the GA has finished and they are selected as the initial winner, but I have not yet selected "Send Key"? I am pretty sure they get the crazy cat message indicating they won the GA, correct?

The reason I am asking is I expect the winner to say Thanks after they have won, especially when they do not say Thanks prior. Saying thanks after a win is what indicates the type of person won, in my opinion. I want to know when the winner knows they have a won. I have given a fair amount of games away and almost none of the winners ever say Thanks.

So the person knows that he/she has won, and can go say thanks without my having sent the key. Thank you for clarifying.

Keep in mind, though, winners are advised to wait for the GA creator to contact them, iow they're not supposed to pester the creator before the 7-day period the creator has to provide the key.

I can only speak for myself. As soon as I see I won something I go and put a nice, appreciative comment on the game. It lets the person know I am around and that I appreciate their effort.

No, they can't.
Thanks implicitly states 'thanks, I got the game'.

Besides, how would they know to say thanks first? You haven't given them anything, and the site has far too many scammers.
And the site has enough people throwing thanks around cheaply, as though it's a completely meaningless word.

If you want to be upset because people don't say thanks after receiving a game, that's legitimate and your prerogative.

If you get upset when it's unreasonable to ask for it, that's on you, not them.

Moreover, we don't say thanks beforehand because it's flippin' rude to do so.
It diminishes the value of the word.
You want shows of gratitude before the giveaway ends? Give us a good prompt, that gives us something real to say.
Don't expect us to throw you empty word just because you can't ask bother to ask us for real ones.

Whatever the case, inflicting your own expectations on others makes you the person at fault, not them-
Which is why, for example, I don't blacklist people for saying 'thanks', and nothing else. Many of them likely have the best of intentions. Well, most are probably bots. But I like to think positively!

That's the thing about blacklisting people for saying thanks, after you told them not to.
You're not blacklisting them BECAUSE they said thanks, you're blacklisting them because they didn't respect you enough to give your attentions any mind, or willfully decided they weren't worth following [which, of course, is their valid decision to make].

So no, we're not going to say thanks right when we win the game, because that would be ridiculous. lacking in value, and attributing you gratitude you haven't yet earned.

tl;dr version: Patience is a virtue, and if they say thank you eventually, the only fault lies in your expectations that they should bypass proper courtesies and jump to throw praises at you.

I'm not sure how you were raised- and I don't mean that as an insult- but that's in sharp contrast to how I learned to value displays of gratitude, as being heartfelt, honest, and deliberate.

So if you wanna blacklist me because I took the time to make sure my words counted for something?
Then by all means- I don't want to give you that degree of deeply considered respect if you're going to toss it aside like it's nothing, anyway.

Disclaimer: I speak only on behalf of people with similar sentiments to myself.
Obviously, many people who don't say anything ARE jerks. But of course, so are many of the ones that do [say generic comments].

I usually comment on the giveaway when I see that I won regardless if the creator added the key or tried to contact me. But I've seen other people commenting only after they received the game. Don't be so quick to judge :)
Also, most of your giveaways are public. "Thank you"s after winning public giveaways are a rare thing. If this bothers you, make invite only for the forum people, or add the winners on Steam and give them the keys via chat.

They see the cat, but not the key. They only see that once you click Send Key.

Note that you should check the winner for unactivated wins and for multiple wins of the same game. If they fail any of these tests, ask for a new winner. However, if your request is denied (because "the winner already served suspension for these infractions"), you are expected by this site to deliver the key. This is regardless if the winner said Thanks or not, and regardless of how bad their conduct was otherwise (and it indeed can be terrible). Not delivering will get you in trouble. How much trouble I don't know yet.

I have always sent the key to the person that won. I did request 1 reroll because after 7+ days it was not marked received but I managed to get the user's attention.

I agree almost all you've said except they saying thanks "before" you sent the key. On their point of view you only organized a raffle, despite your previous GAs you may not send it. Also you have no right not sending key depending solely on this since it is against site rules, even leeches are welcome here.

I suggest to blacklist anyone who is incapable of a simple thanks even it is not heartfelt. Also always put what you expect from contestants without special rules so noone gets hurt at the end. You can only enforce blacklist and reroll if they break the site rules.

You can only enforce blacklist and reroll if they break the site rules.

To elaborate more on this. You can only enforce blacklist in future giveaways, regardless if they break site rules or not. You can reroll if they break the site rules and haven't been suspended for these infractions already (Support will let you know).

Never has a truer word been said! (about entitlement)

Another big one is imposing expectations on others based on our own beliefs. When you say "I expect the winner to say Thanks after they know they have won" you are suggesting there is one (right) way to give thanks, or at least, there is a best way to give thanks.

Most people believe the best time is after receiving the gift so that is when they do it. That doesn't make them wrong (or yourself). We are quick to find fault in others who don't share the same beliefs.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Again, if that were true, then fine, but I have only 1 open giveaway. I have a bunch closed with no thanks. The only way you can give thanks to the creator is a comment to the person giving it away. So when you do it I don't care, but something would be nice, and yes I expect a Thanks from the winner - no one else.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well when it comes down to it, having 'any' expectations of another is imposing expectations based on our beliefs.

I'm all for fostering an environment of gratitude and positivity, but it needs to be done in a positive way (or you're not fostering gratitude and positivity).

Take these two scenarios,
Not expecting anything. 90% of the people meet the status quo (so not positive, not negative). You have much gratitude for the 10% of people that do say thank you.

The other is expecting a thank you. 90% of people disappoint and create a negative experience. 10% of people do as expected, which doesn't create as much gratitude as it's what people are expected to do.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, shush.
You've no interest in teaching people to be thankful, you're interested in having people EXPRESS thankulness in a way that YOU see fit, without (as far as you've stated thus far) giving any indication to them what your expectations are.

You're right- entitlement is out of control.

To some people it might be weird to give thanks before they've received the win. In their mind they might see it as pestering you, the GA creator. There have been GA creators in the past who have gotten annoyed at winners adding them on Steam for example, even though they probably were just doing that to return their thanks. Others have complained of thanks messages filling their inbox. Again, a reason that a winner might not feel like they should be thanking before receiving. Personally, when I've thanked people before they've sent the gift, I've felt compelled to do so again after receiving the key, even if just to add "Thanks again, key activated now :D" or similar to my original message.

I won't be one to judge but in my experience most of the people I've sent keys to for their wins have thanked me after the key was sent. It could be mostly because I send off the keys pretty swiftly after GA end so they have no choice but either way I won't think they're ungrateful if they don't thank me first.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess my experience is different. I think I had one, maybe two people say thanks after winning. I have consistently sent the key as soon as possible to my GAs ending. I am not mad at folks not saying thank you. It simply reminds me of the 10 people healed of leprosy by Jesus... only 1 returned to say thanks. I guess 10% of the winners saying thanks is about as good as it will get.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep, it's true; You won't get any word out of some people. The higher the level you go, the more appreciation you'll probably receive but even at high levels like 7 or 8 I've still had winners never say a word. Groups and whitelists tend to be different to that.

I always thank after receiving a game- because that's when I can honestly and fully mean it, AS a thank you!

No matter how much you intend it to be honest, there's always a bit of doubt and uncertainty before that point, and the thank you will always ring hollow, unless there's specific reason it shouldn't [ie, you know the person directly].

I find people saying thank you at points where it can't be wholeheartedly said, very awkward, at best.

Add in how generically and mindlessly and consistently they do it for every little thing, and that just tells me it's a word they don't place any value in, and only do because they want to adhere to social expectations.

That, I find offensive.

But, again, respect is about being open and considerate.
So you state your perspectives clearly [ex, state in your giveaway what you expect from people] and you try to understand others, before letting your assumptions and personal considerations dictate your final interpretation of matters.

At that point, anyone that attacks you or flaunts your perspectives in your face CAN be disdained, because at that point they're not doing things to their own expectations, but knowingly and willfully spitting at your own considerations.

Annnnyway- always nice reading your comments, they've always been very considerate and open-minded so far :)

I used "fair amount" trying to indicate it was not a lot. However, it is more than some folks, and I try to give more than I win. I prefer not to use a blacklist. I am not trying to be mean to anyone, just trying to instill some appreciation which is not taught much anymore.

"fair amount" implies "more than the baseline/average".
That's implicit in its composing words: Fair amount>>equal amount.
It's a sentiment expressing equalization, with the implication of being better than.
Ergo, it's typically used to indicate 'better than average/better than expected'.

As far as the 'trying to be mean to anyone', please don't take my posts too negatively. I come across a lot harsher than I intend when my health is poor, and I'm sick atm :X

Well, my personal sentiments over use of thank you and how they conflict with yours aside, the people that take the time to say thank you after winning a game are definitely in the minority. Of course, that's not necessarily so bad- it tells you who is worth paying extra mind to. :)

Why are winners 'Anonymous'?
Giveaway winners remain anonymous until their gift is marked received or not received. This is done for security, and to prevent other users from copying the identity of the winner in an attempt to receive their gift.

Have you seen the FAQ?

Er. And posting a thank you reveals yourself.
Meaning you're not supposed to do it until you've received the game.

:scratches head: Not sure how that's not applicable :P

The creator sees exactly who the winner is and their email, so you are already revealed to the creator. As stated that is to not reveal the winner to other entrants so that they cannot impersonate the winner. That is why it is not applicable. (I hope this did not come across as "short" just trying to explain it logically.)

Ah, sorry it just dawned on me what you mean... if someone were to return to the giveaway they could see the "thank you" posted by the winner, and then potentially try to use that information. I can see that, although not a huge potential risk. Sorry it took me a bit to see your point.

Right, and PoM was saying you were asking a question you already knew the answer to, at least as much as the OP knew the answer to their own.

Basically, he's trying to say that you should give benefit of the doubt to people asking questions, that they have an actual reason for doing so :)

Some of us are just addle-minded and need clarification on simple, obvious things, for one!
