So I'm building my first computer and I want Windows 8. However I don't have that much money left and on the official windows site it's priced at $ 160 in my country. So I am wondering if there is any cheaper legit places to get a windows 8 key.

thanks

Do you know anyone? Because, at least for me at my Canadian University we all got a free copy of everything (two if you count the 32 and 64 bit editions separately).

And in general people do not need a single key, as computers all come with a copy.

But it probably is just better to stick with 7, at least until 9 comes out.

windows keys since vista work both on 32 / 64 bit .. one key is only needed for both, and who the hell uses 32 bit since windows xp is a fool

I hope I won't get suspended for this, but www.plati.ru (Is this site against the rules??? Couldn't find anything related)... I'm not sure I'd trust their Windows keys, but it might be just as fine as their steam games. Just check for Language! Cheaper than steam and it's mostly legit. :D
Not a problem for me though, I got a Win 8.1 key from my school, but I'm going to use it on my next laptop. Probably the only "value" it has provided me throughout my 4 years . . . I'm not really a fan of change. :S It was a pain for me to switch from XP to 7 anyway.

why do you need a windows 8? do you have a touchscreen monitor? if you dont have a touch screen monitor, I suggest just buy Windows 7. You wont be able to maximize your money with Windows 8 if you dont have a touchscreen monitor.

1 decade ago

Windows 8 is slightly better than Windows 7, even for non-touch monitors. They're basically the same operating system, once you disable Metro UI, and 8 has a few decent improvements.

Can't really agree with you. I'm (still) using Win 7 Pro and don't have a single problem. My son uses Win 8 and has lots of problems with it. Sadly I do need to change to Win 8 myself soon because I'm programming and need to use the Windows App store for distribution. And honestly, I fear to upgrade to Win 8...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You dont need a touchscreen monitor in order to use Windows 8 properly. There are tons of programs that allow you to have a Start menu, skip the metro screen, etc.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

isnt that a good reason to get Windows 7 instead? why add more cash for windows 8 when you'd just use a program/edit it to remove it's key features? it might have decent improvement in other areas even if you remove the Metro UI but does spending extra cash for that minimal improvement really worth it? unless windows 7 and windows 8 are of the same price at your place then it's better to get windows 8.

Sure wine, playonlinux etc are doing a decent job, i am presently playing baldur's gate 2 EE flawlessly. but saying that most games will work... sorry but no. Most games won't, and most of those who do will suffer in fps or freeze or back to desktop.

I am a big fan of linux since long before ubuntu existed and popularized it and yes there is clear and huge progress, but it simply isn't as good a gaming platform as windows 7 yet for evident reasons. Personally, not being able to play arma 3 with friends on my linux really sucks and games and some pro software such as avid and photoshop are the reason i still keep a windows.

Anyway, just making a point clear for those gamers out here who would want to try it, even if i love linux and am happy to see someone promote it.

If someone wants to play games on linux, better to check that site before installing : https://appdb.winehq.org/

Gotta agree. I run linux as my primary OS because I find it pretty convenient. However, when it comes to modern games, Wine sucks almost at everything compared to Windows. That's why I still have to boot into Win7 to avoid unnecessary headache. Speaking frankly, that's why I still have Win7 at all.

smoother and easier to run, windows 7 is a bit heavy

Personally win 8 seems to have upgraded quite a few things compared to win 7 for me, boot up speed is 4 seconds on win 8 for me (this is due to SSD as well along with a smart start up type thing) along with a few added features and smoother running. In saying that I would never say its WORTH upgrading from win 7 to win 8. But I've never had any problems with win 8 (or win 7 for that matter). They both have been able to run all my games including older ones like kotor 1 and kotor 2 and even where in time is carmen sandeigo and zoombinies. Along with any newer games that are out like saints row IV and things like that.

At the end of the day once you click the desktop tile on win 8, it runs the exact same as win 7 with great compatibility with all software and games I've ever used. Most people just hate on Win 8 because its easy to, and because they hate whats happened to the start bar which in all honestly is a very very minor annoyance since it runs the exact way as the old one (I still press the start button and start typing to search for my programs like I did on win 7).

The only real problem with win 8 is that it has a whole touch screen metro side which runs essentially optional since you hardly use it at all if you don't use store apps. The other problem is for anyone running an SSD or small harddrives the metro side is a fairly annoying bit of bloatware that you wouldn't get with win 7, and thats really it.

A lot of games seem to not run very well in Windows 8. It's also intended more for touchscreen devices, not computers. You have to get extra stuff to even get a start menu to show as it does in 7 rather than whatever in the heck that stupid screen was called. It's definitely a lot more difficult to learn compared to 7 and I"m sure that like every time Microsoft makes a new OS, yet more stuff actually needed to manage your computer is impossible to access in the name of being "user friendly".

Put simply, Windows 8 looks more like an OS intended for a smartphone or tablet, not a computer. I actually used to do support for Microsoft and had to take training on the basics of using Windows 8 and never could make any sense of it enough to be able to tell a customer how to do the basic things we needed to walk them through. It's just completely counter intuitive to people who are used to how Windows has been since 95.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Your arguments are basically "it's different from what I'm used to, therefore worse".

Learn to use? Is start menu where you spend all your time? Outside of "modern interface", majority of the OS is the same as Windows 7, most improvements have been done under the hood.
If you WANT to use apps, then you deal with the fact that they're aimed at touchscreens. Metro apps are completely optional and I don't remember anyone crying over not having apps in Windows 7, but now that Windows 8 all of a sudden has them, it's horrible because there's a completely optional function that people don't like. Boo hoo.

If as a support you can't explain a customer how to do "basic things" in windows 8, then either you don't know enough about Windows 8 or it's not as "basic" as you're trying to make it seem. Most people that call support don't know jack about windows, regardless if it's 7, 8 or 95.

Not all. There's 2 tiers of Dreamspark. Standard only gives Windows Servers and Visual Basic programs. You need the next tier that costs like 3x more then the students get OS and Office but it's also restricted to students in STEM majors.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not a STEM student (never been) but I've studied at a few different colleges and universities in Sweden and always had access to the "premium" tier (The complete Office-pack is not a part of the Premium tier, only things like OneNote and stuff like that. Not Word, excel and things like that.)

So I guess it depends on the School/country whatever they give access to "basic" or "premium" and not the "field" of study.

However, OP is studying at high-school level so s/he does not have access to Dreamspark at all.

To OP

Where in Norway do you live? anywhere close to the Swedish border? You might be able to find it a tad cheaper on the swedish side?

Do you have anything like "studentkortet"(student discount card) for high-school student or a norweigan store offering student discount? you might be able to get a student discount on MS products? Maybe at komplett.no or something like that?
