Seriously every second game coming out is a Roguelike, Platformer, Zombie themed survival/shooter. I'm tired of it. I mean seriously, nobody gave a damn about roguelikes a few years ago and now Steam is full of it.

What are the most overused (dare to say boring) game genres in you opinion? Like when you open up th

Zombie-FPS games, Survival games with crafting, or games with Minecraftish-graphics. Or pick 2-3 from these, and mix them. (thouogh Eldritch is fun :) )
Zombie-survival.
Zombie-survival MMO and similars
Zombies in minecraftish game.
Survivalcraft, and things like that.
Waaaay too much zombies nowadays. And usually trashy ones.

I think the word you are looking for is roguelite. To my knowledge, there have only been 2 roguelikes released this year on Steam - Quest of Dungeons and Rogue's Tale fit the Berlin criteria enough to be roguelikes imo.

Well they're still called roguelikes by the developers and gamers, Civilization V isn't a 4X in a traditional sense people still call it 4X.

I understand your point though, most "roguelikes" aren't really roguelikes.

I basically only play FPS's, or anything with survival or zombies. So those are making my wallet die.

Action. Nowadays everything has to be action-something.
Most common genre are pure action games: shooters, etc.

Then you have Action Adventure, Action RPG, Action Strategy (MOBA), Action Roguelike (Roguelite), etc.

Now, I don't actually have anything against them. There have been many good action-something games, some of which I really enjoyed and count among my favorites. I just tend to prefer the non-action subgenres more, like (point and click) Adventures, turn-based/real-time with pause RPGs, turn-based strategy, true roguelike, etc.

There's also been some interesting new ideas that have come out by merging action with other genres which previously hadn't done so. Technically, that includes MOBAs, which were a new idea, though their popularity has exploded. There's also stuff like Action Tower Defense, which have been rather successful too, and of course "action roguelike" which are also becoming extremely big.

I myself have even favored action hybrids at times due to their uniqueness, such as with MMORPGs. For a while I got tired of traditional MMORPGs and sought out Action MMORPGs like Vindictus, Continent of the 9th, etc which I really enjoyed. Also more traditional MMORPGs without autotargetting.

I guess the trend towards action-ifying everything is probably due to two reasons. First, due to technical limitations, many genres were turn-based and so on, whereas action games had simpler game mechanics. So it's natural that without those limitations hybrids were explored.

Second, I guess it's primarily the difference between the popularity of sports, like soccer, and say, chess, or tabletop games. Yes, sports require some strategy and tactics, but primarily they're about physical skill and coordination among team members. Obviously, many more people prefer sports, so I guess most people in general prefer action-stuff.

Oh, and preference for multi-player games I guess also follows from the sports preference. Though I think single-player, or at least story-based, games are obviously also a significant preference considering nearly everyone enjoys some or all of movies, tv shows, books, theater, etc.

tl;dr. Multi-player action games are the sports of the digital era.

I don't think there is such a thing as an overused genre, you either like a certain genre or you don't, you might even absolutely hate a game that fits in your favorite genre (happens to me quite often).

For example, there are a ton of FPS games out there, but I don't want to call the genre overused because down the line a new fps game will come out, I'll buy it and enjoy the crap out of it.

Another example, JRPGs are my least favorite genre (excluding the old snes/ps1 JRPGs), but I loved Persona 4, it's one of my favorite games of all time.
