There was an interesting interview with political analyst and professor who has huge experience in Asian studies. It was in Latvian so I want to recap a bit the main talking points. While its a bit generic, it comes down to how China sees Ukraine and conflict here, that's why I think its important in this context.

Of course the main topic was the 3 day meeting between putin and xi. What it means and how it came to. On global stage the world was lead by two superpowers up to this point - USA and Russia. With this war and falling out with west it has been reduced to only one superpower. There is no argument there - Russia has no influence now. China wants to take the place of Russia in this bipolar world order. With Xi taking the third consecutive term as president (basically authoritarian dictator), he has put himself up as the imperator and ruler of the nation.

And with that he has claimed to be above the law. China doesn't care about rules, about laws or anything we value in western culture. That's why they think they can take what they want, they don't respect international waters for example, because in their understanding South China sea is theirs, because it simply is called China sea. They want and need to spread this ideology to the west. They see the imperator as the cleanser and mediator to the world and wicked west (we can really see where this attitude for Russians come from).

By this logic we can see why China is playing "neutral" in this war. Their culture (on which Russias authoritative state is based on a lot) doesn't consider the same values we do - in their mind (in line with this Xi being the new imperator) this leader of a country is above any law or rule and if he sees the war worthy it has to happen. That's why China is in no way considering what Ukraine would lose in its peace plan. China is also feeling the issues from lacking food deliveries from Ukraine. That is their concern, not the lives or territories of Ukraine. In their eyes Ukraine is not even worthy to have talks with - Xi sees this as war between Russia and USA. And that is also how Chinese people see it (remember, Xi is basically god like).

Why peace plan at all? China wants to be the "guard" of the world order. To counter USAs police style of keeping the rule. With gun at your head. And Xi has the other issue of having relations with west, but having no true allies. Every neighbor except Russia is against China or leaning towards west. Xi wants to use UN and Russia as a tool. He doesn't care of being part in it (that's why China spits on any accusations of human rights violations). They want to be this guard of order and spread their ideology of one ruler.

So here we can go back to the 3 day meeting. It was very pompous - having meetings in biggest kremlin rooms, walking towards each other over long red carpets. And in Chinese culture this kind of attitude is seen between a king and vassal state (to show respect and gratitude, but to show "Ī am higher and more important then you, but I value you either way". The overly staged, but suspense putin showed it quite well that Xi is there as someone higher then he. It showed that the relationship between the two parts (also with agreements made) is in way that China and Xi are the leaders there. So bad for Russia.

As for Ukraine - they don't see the issues we see. They don't understand the ideology of wanting to defeat Russia. In their eyes stopping the conflict is only important thing and giving land to Russia is only logical step in the eyes of eastern politics. Get back the balance, food deliveries and diplomatic relations of pre-war years. Although out of pure business China will most likely deliver guns to Russia through black markets through countries that are out of suspicion for west. And he ends his analysis by saying that it is really impossible to tell the end of the war. At this point best case would be that putin is taken down by internal forces and this "imperator knows best" attitude and ideology can be taken down with him.

I hope I didn't miss anything. But I think I got main point across from the interview.
