I think its because they don't want bigger uproar within US. As of now there is quit a lot of Trump supporters who still screech and believe that letting Russia take Ukraine would be the end of this conflict and there is zero risk towards NATO. They are on par with our own trolls with spamming this everywhere. They are constantly pulling the "our tax money" and "when Russia nukes us, will that be enough" cards.
So I have a feeling US wants to downplay this a bit, since Biden is in crossroads with giving more stuff to Trumpists to peddle on. Downed drone is only another reason for USA to get more aggressive with Russia. But sad to say a lot of americans don't see the long term risk of backing down. They have no understanding of current geopolitical situation and risk that Baltics and Poland or example are facing if Ukraine falls.

But as for the fuel - my theory is (at least coming from how Russia operates up to this point) that they thought they could spray fuel on it with hopes of blinding the camera and messing with control board, hence making it crash. In that case they could try to peddle some nonsense of the drone crashing itself... Wouldn't be surprised if they don't know that drone command central have full eyes on the drone and cameras.. ISW latest analysis states that Russia may be approaching culmination in this spring attack.
With all the setbacks along the frontline and huge struggle they have taking Bakhmut with the current called up 300k conscripts (who knows if its not even more then that) it seems unlikely that they could turn tide even with a new mobilization wave. This could mean that Ukraine could have chance to gather strength for new counterattack and gain ground over this year.
Well - of course here's to hoping that will be the case. But with reports we have seen with disastrous attempts to take Bakhmut and surrounding area it really doesn't seem likely for them. They have been pushed back constantly with big losses already and any gain they have is very little and already predicted by Ukraine. Question is how accurate are reports from Ukraine side about the losses.
I mean even in Bakhmut the biggest success has been thanks to Wagner. But even those poor sods are being taken out slowly with Prygozhin moaning like a wounded dog about lacking support from Kremlin. With sorry state of KAdyrov and the horrible attempt at going to Mariupol by putlers double..... going to be interesting following period... Will they break through and what will be the state of already unmotivated, unprepared and unarmed army after these battles? We might see more lethal missile attacks against cities of Ukraine again and again. Maybe they are running out of rockets, but I don't doubt they have planned it out for the most damage they could cause to civilian targets. Only thing to pray to is that they don't come to conclusion its time to get back to nuclear threats.

Here in The Netherlands there is also 1 politician who is in love with Putin. And his followers believe this Russian bullshit too. At the same time, they believe the earth is flat, the World Economic Forum controls the world, they believe in lizard people, they believe 5G will control your brain and Bill Gates his nano bots were in corona vaccinations (no joke). They are conspiracy nutcases. So trolls might reach them very simple souls. But around here the majority of the country doesn't take them seriously and just laughs at them.

Unfortunately seems that these nutcases are quite a lot around. I've mentioned it in the thread previously but we in Latvia also have several Kremlin loving politicians. One of them actually received sentence of public works for discrediting Latvian history in relation to Soviet Union (she actually went to a museum about soviet time occupation and people that got deported to gulags, and again on that moron site tiktok she put up a video where in Russian she just goes around and proclaims how everything is lies there. Afterwards tried to say how sorry she was and how she actually meant the deported numbers were higher. The audacity of the bitch). Yet she is still in parliament and somehow representative of our country. It's just sick. Plus she's unimaginably stupid. Got her 5 minute fame on tiktok celebrating putler and has rap sheet of being quite a cheap hooker... yup, a hooker. a prostitute. A worlds oldest profession where she sucked your dick for several euros. And that kind of people are the ones who support putlers fascistic regime, yet somehow got voted in parliament by the Russian speaking part of our country. Because for them to give their vote you only have to check one box - Speak Russian. You could be holding a dead infant in your arms and they would still vote for you if only you spoke Russian.
As a side note of the stupidity and arrogance of these war supporters - there was a news segment where journalist were called up to check out a flat where there are Russian flags and "Putin is my friend" written on windows. Turns out in the flat there lives Russian women who constantly goes to protests with Z on her clothes and continues to celebrate the invasion and putler. She actually was already arrested once for disrupting peace and she sat in jail overnight IIRC.... The god damned lunatic enjoyed it. She said it was liberating and like a nirvana for her. Sitting in jail with a smile on her face for celebrating murder and invasion of a country. These people are simply out of this world level stupid.

[Twitter] - 1/ Moscow students are reportedly being handed mobilisation orders along with their diplomas, literally at the very minute that their exemption from military service expires. This is happening at the same time that Russia is reportedly seeking 400,000 new soldiers.
2/ The independent Russian news outlet Verstka reports that the Moscow Aviation Institute – a well-regarded university which feeds engineering graduates to Russia's aerospace industry – is refusing to give students their diplomas unless they agree to go to the enlistment office.
3/ "They don't issue a diploma until you sign a summons [to go to the military enlistment office]. The military commissar sits right in the office where they issue the diploma," one of the students says. "Along with the diploma they require you to sign a contract at once.
4/ This is for those who have been studying for five and a half years as a specialist. They do not care, especially the Golovinskiy Military Registration and Enlistment Office, which does not dismiss summonses even if the temporary registration has expired."
5/ Another graduate, who went to the enlistment office but refused the offer of a contract, says: “They are trying to get people with higher education to sign a contract.
6/ And brazenly, you come to the military registration and enlistment office with this summons and they immediately say, go there and sign a contract."
7/ This appears to be a separate effort from the still-ongoing compulsory mobilisation. Russia is reported to be seeking 400,000 new volunteer professional ("contract") soldiers to replace the numerous troops it lost in the first phase of the war in Ukraine.
