[Meh] Full-screen ad on Steamgifts covers most of page

Imagine my surprise when I saw an animated full-screen ad on SG. Is this a new thing or have I just been lucky so far to avoid it?

It said scroll down to view content, but the whole first page was obscured by the ad, basically.

Yeah, it's chrome on Android. The ad was from the United States postal service.

Only getting regular small ads, but they seem to be quite regional so unlikely to hit USPS.

On android you can use an adblocker plugin such as ublock origin (the best one) if you switch to Firefox. It's the easiest and best non-root non-network-skills way of blocking ads on android.

I would usually recommend to whitelist sites that you want to support from your adblocker but if they do ads like that I feel it's best to block them for your security and dataplan's sake.

That's really weird. It's like the foreground is scrolling over the ad, and the ad owns both the top and bottom ad spots, somehow taking over the site's background.

I've always had adblock on so I didn't even realize there were ads until I paid to get rid of them

Yeah, I normally use adaway on android (rooted) but had it disabled and saw the horrors of the ads :p

Firefox for mobile allows you to install extensions so you can use the usual ones there

DNS66 lets you block unsafe sites, as well as ads, doesn't need root.

Must be downloaded from F-Droid and side-loaded, as Google does not allow this kind of apps on the Play Store AFAIK.

I haven't seen a full-screen ad on steamgifts before but if I ever see one then I'm immediately going to turn on adblock.

Phone = Adblock all the way. I'm on a 1GB plan so don't have the capacity for all those ads (or gifs, but can't blcok those since I can't configure block list)

I prefer to use Adblock and pay a few bucks via Patreon instead anyway. This is exactly what I don't want on SG or any other sites.

no. my adblock is turned off for SG for almost 3 years and I only have banner ads I really dont mind

I guess thats an exclusive mobile browser "feature"

While I understand companies want (and in some cases need) to advertise, I've never understood why they think "junk mail" and other obtrusive techniques are a good idea. I find such advertising to be counter-productive because it greatly annoys your potential customers.

i use my browser chrome without adblockers because i'm poor and i can't do many giveaways,so the only way i have for support sg for the little that i can is see their advertising... BUT i never see ads like that you show,i only always see a square at the top left of my screen and they never go full page,but maybe i just lucky i don't know

Yeah i don't mind the banner ads, they're there for a reason, but when they take over the page for fullscreen adverts, that's going too far.
