I've seen some people I trade with have 2000+ steam games. I myself have been trying to get steam badges, and am currently closing at the 250 one. I was wondering if there's a way people are getting so many. For instance I had someone tell me that dlc counts as a game.

Gibaways, trades (bought 1$ bundles earlier, passed for another bundled, kept this doing until got non-bundled games too), some sales, sold cards/made badges which dropped expensiver stuffs, booster pack sold etc. Some game just been gifted to me (done the same of course).
Important: not payed even 100$ for all my stuffs lol just earned.

I check here regularly
They also have a section listing games that are being offered free on different sites

This one may be easier to use, because they list all active bundles with a countdown
They also have a list of every game on offer in a bundle with links TO the bundle
AND they list of a whole bunch of free games from around the interwebz

EDIT none of the free games look to be Steam so I guess that's where they fall behind IGB...

Thanks a lot for these links. I was able to get about another 100 games with this. went from 200 to 250 so far, but i still have 50ish more keys. (Steam keeps saying "too many unsuccessful attempts" even tho i havnt even had 1..)

They either buy them on sales, in bundles, get free keys, or ninja them.

Or in the case of 99% of SG but not me anymore, they win them in GA's here.

Well...when a mommy game and a daddy game really love each other....or get really drunk after 2am....

Errr...I mean bundles and a complete lack of standards and taste. Out of my 376 games more than 100 are in a category I named "junk" and another 150 are in "unplayed." Some of them are games I thought I'd like then didn't and some I idled for cards. Worst part, I only paid real money for two games (Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and the PS3 version of Portal 2 which came with a Steam version) the rest were gifts, won (but only 3 from steamgifts), acquired from other sites, bought with Playfire money and bought with card money. I've had a Steam account for 11 years and 374 of these games are from the last two years.

I've started to show restraint though, for example: if I get some bundle keys and there is a horror game...I will NOT activate it just for cards. Horror is just not my thing so I'm staying away from that genre. So I now have some standards and taste...just not much.

Bundles, sales & this site. And I'm a "hunter & gatherer" when it comes to games. "Oh, this is so cheap! I probably will never play it, but maybe it will never again be this cheap so I can't pass up on this opportunity, can i? ... ponders ... buys"

CG released a graphic yesterday i think which shows that 2014 a million games were flooding steam. Greenlight shit that is. You can often get 10 of these shit games for 1-2 dollars in bundles.

As so many have already said mostly it's bundles, sales and giveaways. Mostly bundles. Since I found out about them like a month ago my game list got from 160 that was after the Holiday sale to 339 in a matter of weeks. Doubt there has been a day I haven't added some random indie title for a while now. And the days there's no new bundles there's usually some nice discount on steam or a couple other sites or I win a giveaway either here, gameminer or the WGN twitch channel. Steam, the new Pkmn emulator. Gotta have 'em all!

As someone who got 400+ games I can tell you a secret how it is possible:

  • I bought most of them.
  • I got some of them for free.

And that's it.

And if you want some details:

  • Humble Bundle. You can get 3 games for a 1 dollar, or 10 for 12. (one will be revealed on Thursday) Also 2-3 times a year they giveaway a free game.
  • Other bundle sites. A lot of cheap games. Usually still overpriced.
  • Steam sales.
  • Polish magazine CD-Action. It costs 15,99 PLN (aprox 4,35$) and it always includes 2-5 games. Current edition includes Deadlings Rotten Edition (Steam), Ghost Recon Future Soldier (UPlay) and Commander Conquest of the American Gold (DRM Free). New one will be released 10.02.2015 with The Movies with Stunts and Effects expansion pack (DRM Free) and Risen 2 (Steam) Unfortunately this is an option only for people in Poland since sometimes games are region locked.
  • DHL.NET and Who's Gaming Now are creating regular free games giveaway - about 5 titles a year each.
  • Steamgifts. 15 games so far for me.
  • Other offers of free games. Usualy if there is one, someone will mention about it on Steamgifts forums. So keep reading.
