Funny thing is that this game was part of the GDC Relief Bundle and it didn't include Steam keys. Now the developer gives it away and includes Steam keys but (oh, surprise) it already ran out of keys.

So: buyers of the bundle (who paid money for the game) can't get a Steam key and people who got it on the Alienware Arena giveaway for free can't get a Steam key either.

Let's see if they add more Steam keys.

It's poor planning on their part.

I didn't get it from Alienware, but I bought the GDC Relief Bundle and it seems they added Steam keys for those people too :)

Hi devotee, sorry for that. I just learned about adding steam keys to itch.io after GDC Relief Bundle. Send me a mail at kolja@portaldogs.com and I will send you a Steam key.

Thank you very much for your comment. I already got my key on itch.io since it seems you've refilled them.

I think on itch.io you can assign steam keys to "pools". For example, if you gave 5000 keys on Alienware, you should be able to create a "pool" for it (tagged as "Alienware", for example) and assign 5000 keys there. You can assign a specific "pool" for itch.io download pages that come from purchases (bundles, itch.io) sales and assign as many Steam keys as you think you'll need there.

Doing so won't mix the Alienware giveaway and "paid" copies so if the 5000 Steam keys for Alienware are used, it won't start taking them from the "paid" pool, making sure that anyone that actually pays for your game foes receive a Steam key.

Anyway, thank you again for taking care of this and adding more Steam keys!

Hi I checked it out. But it looks like you can make pools of itch.io keys. But you can not control the Steam keys. Steam keys are always first come first serve.

Oh, from itch.io's documentation I understood that it can be done but maybe you can only do it for paying/non-paying owners of your game. Since Alienware copies come as a download link it grants ownership of the game.

If the game is given away free on the itch.io store, it shouldn't grant ownership.

Another possibility is that you have to do it when creating the download links ("keys") instead of doing it when adding the Steam keys:

Keys created in bulk have two additional options:
\

  • The Unlock price lets you specify which files of your project should be unlocked by the keys you're generating, in case you want to set apart bonus tiers (soundtrack, artbook, etc.) for fans who have actually bought your project.
  • The Give access to external keys option lets you specify whether the keys you're generating should give access to one of the external keys you've added for your project.

In any case, both the Alienware download links and the GDC Relief bundle purchase will get the Steam keys from the same place, on a first come first serve basis, as you said.

If you make another GA for your game and you don't want it to include Steam keys (which would be pulled from the Steam keys for all other owners) you should remember to turn off the Give access to external keys option when generating the download links (if I understood everything correctly this time).

Just got my key too in itch.io. If you redeem yours, check for any giveaways you've entered. Syncing won't remove them.

You can find the key on the Portal Dogs download page on itch.io. Took me a few minutes to figure out where the key would be sent.
