Long story short

I made a puzzle giveaway threadmgifts.com/discussion/osTNA/) two weeks ago, giving out a Hand of Fate key. The giveaway was to end on Xmas eve.
I then made a discussion thread in which I linked a giveaway for The Stanley Parable, that one only lasting 3 days.

But when came the time to hand in the key to the winner of The Stanley Parable, for some reason I had Hand of Fate in mind, so I innocently went on Humble Bundle and checked out the Hand of Fate key and gave it out to the winner.

Naturally, he came back to me saying that the key wasn't for The Stanley Parable, and that's when I understood my mistake.
Having given the key directly rather than sending the Humble Gift link, he couldn't know before Steam redeemed the key, so it was too late to cancel. Thanks for reading by the way, BfnHK to you. Gave him the proper key, and he was nice enough to send a Steam support ticket to see if anything could be done about it, but we got no response, so I deleted the Hand of Fate giveaway and marked the puzzle as cancelled.

Results

  • I got a happy winner of 2 games
  • I had to cancel my puzzle giveaway
  • People solved the puzzle for nothing
  • I feel pretty stupid

Lessons learned

  • I will check twice before sending out keys
  • I will send the Humble Gift link by email rather than copying the key code
  • I'm pretty stupid

tl;dr

I sent the wrong key to someone and had to cancel a giveaway. FML

What about you?

Have you made any stupid mistakes in here?

Thanks.
You can put the hunble-link directly where the key belongs (here on SG) and the winner will see it just fine.
You can even put them there, when creating a giveaway, since you have to sent it manually anyways.

I once did a keydrop without mentioning the game. Unfortunately it was for an unbundled AAA game and the person who took it felt bad because it wasn't their kind of game at all.

I no longer do nameless keydrops, since the last thing I want is to make people unhappy with gifts.

Aye, I can relate to that. It is such an unfortunate experience when a gift makes someone unhappy. Matching correct gift with correct person is hard. Anyone else finds Christmas stressful?

When I was new I made a couple of giveaways for my spare keys and didn't know I had to check if they weren't allowed to be given away, so like one of them of course wasn't and I didn't manage to figure out how to delete giveaways in time and got myself a supsension. Also +1 to entering every single giveaway without liking the game expecting not to win anything at all, luckily most of my early wins were still pretty nice games.

Also made the mistake of blacklisting an entitled user who made a tantrum threads about it yet couldn't find the time to play their wins :3

I sent the wrong key to a winner. It was right above the proper key in my Indigala list, I just copied the wrong one by mistake. I tried to remedy it by contacting the guy on Steam but he wouldn't answer my friend request. Had to sit for a week-long ban because of it.

Activated a won key on the wrong steam account (my brothers). Had to buy the game myself then.
There's worse.

Won a game, it was region locked and i couldn't activate it.
Talked with the GA-Creater but he could not talk english...
Gave the game away to someone who could activate it and stayed with the "one not activated"...
Later i bought the game again.

"Winning games i had no interest in just for the sake of winning something."

BTW...you don't need to email HB gift links. You can just set up your GA as a "gift" instead of "key," and then after the GA completes, you click on the key field to update it, and then paste in the HB friend link, and then hit send. When the person goes to check their "key," they'll get the HB friend link right inside SG instead and can just follow the process.

my biggest mistake is not remaining with a fake personality to fit in with everyone on sg and groups.

my second biggest mistake was picking fights with idiots.

My mistake? Pointing out rulebreakers mistakes. Their responses usually frustrates me... and I'm still doing that... Oh, fu*k my sense of justice.

Entering and then winning Dragon's Dogma giveaway. It's the only SG win where I can't get 100% achievement completion :'(

How come? Are the achievements broken?

No, the achievements are working properly.

It's more about my own inability to achieve some of them. Bitterblack Isle is extremely hard for me. I should have researched the game more before I entered it because I didn't enjoy it at all either. I consider it as easily my worst mistake on SG and it's the only win I didn't enjoy. I have been much pickier since then.

Oh I had that with the Arkham Batman games. I knew there was absolutely no way I'd get the combat challenge ones so I just ignored them.

A few months ago I forgot to mark some of my groupees keys as used, so I tried to make a giveaway for them. Naturally, the winners were kinda peeved.
Gave them beta keys for my game instead, though, so I guess it all worked out.

You did delete those GAs, right ?
Because as you hopefully know after 5 years on this site you can't just give people a different game than advertised.

Yeah. I deleted it and gave them the game to make everything go smoothly and as an apology for wasting their time.

I guess maybe forgetting to remove entries after getting a key elsewhere. I also won a game once and didn't get it for a long time because there was no description stating it wasn't a key or whatever. Randomly had an idea to check my email on like the 5th or 6th day and found the gift link,

Entering for a game my PC was´nt able to handle (and winning it) - MGS Ground Zeroes to be exact.
Drove me mad that the GA maker would think i´d only entered for the +1 on a pricey game :E

While creating a pack of cheap bundled games giveaways, I pasted the key in the description for one of them.
Later, winner added me on steam and told me (nicely) key didn't work - including the reason, he already figured it out.

After laughing at myself and apologizing for being an idiot, I did what was right: bought a single key for the game and sent him. Lol.

I gave away over 100 games before I understood the group, puzzle, invite-only, and whitelist giveaways. I also screwed up a giveaway recently because I unknowingly already had the DLC I won.

Winning game(s) I didn't want because I was happier about winning than asking for a reroll (also I was quite new so I didn't know I can just politely refuse the game)
Expecting people actually entering giveaways for games they want (hoarding or mistakes, like my 1st point)
Mixing up two keys in two or three separate ocassions, but thankfully they got sorted out nicely - had extra copies / friends to help me out.
And a funny self-inflicted calling-out suspension for two days that I was laughing at so hard at the suspension screen because I instantly knew that that was the point the support found my comment :D Totally deserved it, it was just funny because otherwise it had a happy end, then moderation happened. Was uncomfortable to browse the forum in private browsing :P

And guy created a thread basically asking"what should I do with this steam gift?" And I jokily said "you can give it to me :P"(with the smile) and then I told him in the same comment that you can either make a GA, trade it or keep it to yourself.

The mod didn't like my begging joke. Banned for a week. Learned my lesson.
