Why do Trading Card Booster Packs worth so much?

On the Steam Community Market they worth about $4 to $10.
They include 3 cards, and the cards are usually about $0,20 to $0,50.
There is a small chance to get a foil though, is that the reason people buy booster? Don't think the chance to get a foil is sooo high..

But why do someone WANT booster packs? Buying the cards directly is much cheaper?

yeah it's pointless to buy them to get foils, there are low amounts of booster packs on the market though, I think that's the reason.

Check different games. Not all games' cards are worth 0,20 or 0,30. The average price of non-foils across all games, from what I've seen, is more around 2 or 3 bucks.

Here's some.

The prices have indeed dropped pretty fast apparently since last I checked, just checked a couple of other games, but there's definitely enough games with cards worth between 0.40 - 0.80, not only 0,20 - 0,30. Check They Bleed Pixels cards, or Anodyne, or Go Home Dinosaurs.

Anyway, usually the booster packs are around the average cost of 3 regular cards for that game, plus a tiny bit extra for the chance at foils. Only when there's only a handful do you see their price being higher than that, as is to be expected.

Ok, there might be 1-3 games which cards are worth more..

But search for Dota2 cards, they are around 0,30 cents but the booster costs ~$5.
Even the foils are only $2-$3.

Check the graph on the Dota 2 booster pack page. You can see a steep increase in price, right around when demand and mainly supply got less. There's not a lot of them in circulation, and as the demand isn't very high, the price isn't dropping, as there's less people undercutting the lowest market price they see to try and quickly get rid of it.

actually their worth is only what someone is willing to pay for them. overall booster packs are not worth buying in my opinion when the cards themselves are cheaper some of the sets you can get for what it would cost for one booster pack

Maybe in some cases it is cheaper to buy boost packs for a chance at a foil card than it is to buy a new copy of the game on a new account for a chance at a foil card?
