Dec. 15, 2017 (Now with free pie (Animal Lover, ChargeShot, and Fermi's Path giveaways))
Alright, back at it again. Seems like I'm getting more and more controller-only/controller-specialized games in my library, so I'm itchin' to get a new controller (as the last 360 I had arrived defective and finished breaking itself fairly quickly). Figured I'd check in with you all again first. ^.^

Currently I'm heavily favoring the Logitech F310, though this off-brand 360 has cheap 3/4 year warranty plans through Amazon, so at $20 total it feels like it'd be an acceptable gamble (despite its sparsity of reviews).

I missed the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales on the Dual Shock 4, and I'm a bit loathe to pick this over the Logitech F310, without a clear indication that Dual Shock 4s have the performance and durability to warrant having three times the price of the Logitech.

Official 360 wired controllers seem to be going off the market (I can't find a single online store with stock, other than a small handful who indicate they're shipping from a dubious source out of China), and honestly, I don't want to go with one again anyway (it's what I picked after this thread, originally), as the D-Pad was as much of a concern as people noted it'd be, and the controller started having issues fairly early on (meaning there's no appreciable reason not to just go off-brand).

The Steam Controller looks promising, but I haven't heard if early durability considerations were ever addressed, and the price tag is still a bit intimidating, especially considering that the DS4 is in the same price range, and generally better considered.

I prefer wired controllers, and I prefer cheaper controllers, so generally wireless controllers aren't a feasible recommendation for me.
My top budget'd be $60 (but you'd have to convince me the controller is worth paying 4 times the cost of the low-end ones ;P). So far, there's only One controller in that range that I'm rejecting outright.

Update: Ended up ordering a Dualshock 4. Thanks to everyone who helped out!
Leaving the thread active a while longer so the giveaway can get more entrants. ^.^

Original July 6, 2016 post below:

I finally worked through the Windows Update bugs [thanks to a 3rd party site that offers their own downloader for when Windows Update (apparently rather frequently) breaks] and got my new rig up, running, and updated to Windows 10.
(At which point I promptly queued up exactly 30 games to install on steam, because obviously.)

Aaaaand my controller drivers aren't compatible with 10. :P

Whelp, time to be frivolous with my finances-
Which controller ought I get, and more importantly why do you feel that way?
Also, if there are any downsides, limitations, restrictions, or quirks to a controller, let me know!

  1. Wireless doesn't matter to me. To the contrary, wired is typically preferable.
  2. I already have a clear idea of dualshocks, thus they aren't listed in the poll. :)
  3. A good d-pad is preferable. =O

Heard of a good sale, or know of a good sale site? Throw that at me, as well!

Xbox 360. Currently have Xbox one controller, needing to change the batteries quite often is a bit annoying, but that's it.

This might be of some help, I think it feels similar to what you are looking for.
I use a wired xbox 360 controller btw. So voted for the xbox 360 controller.

I haven't had a single problem with my 360 wired controller. One of the best buys I have ever made. Very comfortable and very reliable.

I have a Logitech F710, and to me it beats the Xbox 360 controller due to one simple thing: better D-pad. If you're like me and mainly use your controller for 2D games, like 2D platformers, Shmups and so on, then the terrible D-pad on the 360 controller is a dealbreaker. It also has native Xinput & DirectInput support (with a switch on the controller for switching between the two standards).
360 controller has better triggers or whatever they call them today (seriously, stop renaming buttons!), and sticks, so for 3D games, shooters in particular, the 360 is better. Never had the chance to use an Xbone controller (don't even know anyone who owns an Xbone).

like 2D platformers, Shmups

Right, list two of the three genres I'm most picky about. :P

I don't play enough shmups (just a few co-ops, and those typically on console) to care there, but 2d platformers seem to typically be best with kb+m. Of course, I mostly play co-op puzzle platformers or adventure-platformers, so precision tends to be more important than fluidity or responsiveness.

But, I do mostly favor a controller for fighting, brawling, and racing games, all of which tend to overwhelmingly rely on the d-pad over joystick.. so definitely giving your recommendation strong consideration :)

(Also, did they change names at any point? In my experience, top-buttons are buttons, anything not on the top [including shoulderpads] are triggers.)

At first they were just called shoulder buttons, then when they became more than just simple buttons that you either pressed or did not press but could detect how much you pressed them they were called reflex buttons for a short while (at least in marketing material) and now the 2 ones on the back are called triggers.

As for platformers with keyboard & mouse, I think it depends entirely on how they're designed. If you use a mouse for aiming (like in Trine or Abuse), then keyboard & mouse is the way to go, while a game like Shovel Knight works best with a controller.
But yeah, if a good d-pad is what you need, then the 360 controller is not the controller to get.

Going to have to favor the 360 controller- the Logitech looks like a more awkward-to-grip dualshock, and I prefer the d-pad placement of the 360 controller. ..it seems the 360 is also $10 cheaper on average. :P

Look into other controllers. There are a bunch of different ones. I've heard that they fixed the d-pad on the Xbone controller, though as I've never used one, I can't really comment on how good it is.

I like my 310 because of position of d-pad and analogue stick. I don't like x360 positioning.

Yeah- I feel like Microsoft's status as 'the FPS game controller' is warranted, but I feel the standard playstation-styled layout works better for most everything else. On the other hand, one of the reasons I was edgy about the F310 was because it looked bulkier (and harder to grip) than the standard playstation design, and with a less well-placed d-pad than either dualshocks or microsoft controllers: The dualshock has its d-pad dominate the side, while the xbox design hugs it into an alcove. Meanwhile, the F310 has it surrounded by a lot of empty plastic- seems like it'd be hard to use, especially if you're playing a game with d-pad and analog swapping.

I actually find that the DS3/4 is ideal for platformers, side-scrollers, and fighting games - where you primarily use the D-pad - while the Xbox style controller is ideal for any 3D game - action, adventure, driving, sports, shooter, etc. The way my hands naturally rest puts the thumbs over the left thumbstick and face buttons of Xbox style staggered controllers - which are the controls used for everything that isn't a 2D game. On the DualShock controllers, it's over the D-pad and face buttons, ideal for 2D games, but means that my left thumb has to move out of its natural resting position for any 3D game.

I feel like which you prefer comes down to what you're used to (I used to love the DS layout when all I had was a PS2, but strongly prefered the Xbox layout after spending some time with a 360 controller), and what games you tend to play more.

It's a matter of taste maybe but I honestly don't even hesitate about it, if I'm gonna play a platformer I plug my controller.
On the other side, I prefer to play fighting games with the keyboard.

Oh, it's only for specific games. Brawlhalla, for example, has notable input lag if you play with kb+m. It (much like many brawlers and fighters) also simply plays better with controller.

Past brawlers/fighters, just a few action-adventure and racing games built with controller in mind, and fps games.
still, while it's only a subset of the games I play [especially considering I primarily play PnCs, 4X, and CCGs, all of which I presume would be rather awkward with a controller], I find many of them to be similar to Brawlhalla in their frustrations, when attempted without a controller.

Pretty few action-rpgs or platformers that I'd favor a controller on.

In the case of Brawlhalla, yeah, a bit. I love the game, but it can be a hot mess at times.
For most others, it's usually just games/genres that favor input fluidity over input precision, or are direct console ports.
Others are based in the ability to run two joysticks at once, which can be hard to mimic with kb+m, depending on the implementation.

It's not a competition- especially since it's so easy to gear up to handle any input preference.
Well, except in the case of bad ports- then you're boned no matter what you go with.

i just c&p my post from the other thread. ^^

the xbox one controller is great, but i hate the bumpers. they are ok, if you only need to press them briefly. but if you need to hold them, i think they're awful. that's why i play dark souls with the 360 controller, and nearly everything else with the one controller. i wish i could put them in a box, shake them for a few seconds, and take out a combined xbox 361 controller! ^^

I really like the XBox One controller, overall it's a big improvement over the 360 but the bumpers are terrible.

Another vote for 360 wired. Many pc games are designed with it in mind.

are they? i wouldn't say that. it really depends what type of game you prefer. strategy games work best with m&k - and most of them don't work with a controller at all. but platformers, fighting games, 3rd person action-adventures, sports games, racing games and many others work pretty well with a controller. i very much prefer a controller for everything i can use it for. i am even currently playing Doom with a controller, and it works surprisingly well (and i always said how bad controllers are for shooters).

I was referring specifically to games that were designed with controller in mind...fighting games, platformers, racing like you mentioned. For example, Castle Crashers and several other games even use the button icons for the 360 controller in game. But yeah, for shooters, rts and the like I always use mouse and keyboard.

CC is actually one of the few designed with controllers in mind that actually plays fine with kb+m. Otherwise, gotta agree with you- well, I can't attest to the 360 bit, but many games are definitely built with controllers in mind.

depends heavily on the shooter, I've found. A great many modern shooters are built with controllers in mind. definitely some older ones I'd favor keyboard on, but I find controllers more fluid for most modern fps/3ps games.

It depends on whether the game is 2D (DS4) or 3D (Xbone)
Basically the DS4 has the best D-Pad and the Xbone has the best analog stick, at least for me.

I'll also occasionally use an arcade stick for shmups, beat em ups and the like, depending if I can be bothered.

as much as i like both xbox controllers, i will say that the wireless adapters are too fucking expensive. my 360 adapter recently broke, so i ordered both the 360 and the One adapter (until then i used the One pad wired). i paid ~40€ that day. just for the wireless adapters. i could have bought a whole new controller for that money. ^^
