Dec. 15, 2017 (Now with free pie (Animal Lover, ChargeShot, and Fermi's Path giveaways))
Alright, back at it again. Seems like I'm getting more and more controller-only/controller-specialized games in my library, so I'm itchin' to get a new controller (as the last 360 I had arrived defective and finished breaking itself fairly quickly). Figured I'd check in with you all again first. ^.^

Currently I'm heavily favoring the Logitech F310, though this off-brand 360 has cheap 3/4 year warranty plans through Amazon, so at $20 total it feels like it'd be an acceptable gamble (despite its sparsity of reviews).

I missed the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales on the Dual Shock 4, and I'm a bit loathe to pick this over the Logitech F310, without a clear indication that Dual Shock 4s have the performance and durability to warrant having three times the price of the Logitech.

Official 360 wired controllers seem to be going off the market (I can't find a single online store with stock, other than a small handful who indicate they're shipping from a dubious source out of China), and honestly, I don't want to go with one again anyway (it's what I picked after this thread, originally), as the D-Pad was as much of a concern as people noted it'd be, and the controller started having issues fairly early on (meaning there's no appreciable reason not to just go off-brand).

The Steam Controller looks promising, but I haven't heard if early durability considerations were ever addressed, and the price tag is still a bit intimidating, especially considering that the DS4 is in the same price range, and generally better considered.

I prefer wired controllers, and I prefer cheaper controllers, so generally wireless controllers aren't a feasible recommendation for me.
My top budget'd be $60 (but you'd have to convince me the controller is worth paying 4 times the cost of the low-end ones ;P). So far, there's only One controller in that range that I'm rejecting outright.

Update: Ended up ordering a Dualshock 4. Thanks to everyone who helped out!
Leaving the thread active a while longer so the giveaway can get more entrants. ^.^

Original July 6, 2016 post below:

I finally worked through the Windows Update bugs [thanks to a 3rd party site that offers their own downloader for when Windows Update (apparently rather frequently) breaks] and got my new rig up, running, and updated to Windows 10.
(At which point I promptly queued up exactly 30 games to install on steam, because obviously.)

Aaaaand my controller drivers aren't compatible with 10. :P

Whelp, time to be frivolous with my finances-
Which controller ought I get, and more importantly why do you feel that way?
Also, if there are any downsides, limitations, restrictions, or quirks to a controller, let me know!

  1. Wireless doesn't matter to me. To the contrary, wired is typically preferable.
  2. I already have a clear idea of dualshocks, thus they aren't listed in the poll. :)
  3. A good d-pad is preferable. =O

Heard of a good sale, or know of a good sale site? Throw that at me, as well!

Xbox 360 Controller, works with all current versions of windows, most games with controller support were made using a 360 controller so all mapping is already done for you,and can get them wired or wireless,i have used the wireless ones myself for years have never had issues.

The XBOX360 one should be the most compatible, I only use it to play Hyperdimension Neptunia though so I'm not a big gamepad user... :/

Nvidia Shield Controller. Because if a game has controller support and it's indeed the best option I'm going to be streaming through my Shield 99% of the time. Can't say I'm really much for controllers in general but the Shield controller has some nice features.

Xbox one is nice for 10, since it's automatically on there, but recent update broke it ad you need to reinstall an old version. Otherwise, I use the wiiu pro controller. Easy set up, but somewhat involved.

The PS4 controller (DualShock4). IMO, it is the most comfortable controller (at a reasonable price) in the market.
Sure, you have to jump through a few hoops to get x-input compatibility, but once that is set up, it's smooth sailing!

While I appreciate the simplicity of just being able to plugging in the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controller (better d-pad here, so this over 360), my vote goes toward the Wii U Pro Controller.

It's comfortable, I personally have no problem using programs or binding keys when needed, and the battery life on it is the best of any wireless controller out there.

I just bought a Steam controller during the sales. Looking forward to trying it out as soon as it arrives next week. Other than that I use my Dualshock 3, which works pretty good with PC games. Although button names can get sometimes confusing.

I mainly use an X360 controller since it's pretty hassle-free, but I think I might like a DS4.
I would use my F710, but the receiver is botched and I don't know where to find one at a reasonable price.

Also, I'm interested in the Steam controller, but I think I'll wait a bit more to see how it is accepted.

I use a wireless Xbox 360 controller with rechargeable packs or USB SNES controller. Mostly I use the 360 controller but when I play platformers I use the SNES dpad.

Why there is no option for dual shock in the poll? I use keyboard+mouse most of the time, dual shock 3 in local coop and I also own 2 logitech f310 for when I play gauntlet and other 4x local coop games.

I've been using the Xbox 360 controller for years and it works great, except for the crappy d-pad. There were times when I had to use the keyboard for some precision platform jumping.

How do people manage to break controllers so easy? I've had mine for 4 years and not a scratch on it.

The controller I received was defective on arrival, and the local post office bungled the return, so I didn't make it in time for the replacement window. Regardless, Microsoft controllers have never really impressed me with their durability to begin with, so I can only imagine it would have broken by now regardless.

By contrast, my PS2/etc console controllers still work after nearly two decades, and I've never had a Nintendo controller break anything more on me than N64 and Gamecube controllers just wearing down their joysticks. Hell, even the oft-maligned Jaguar controllers were reliably durable. I've never really had an issue with any controller other than Microsoft ones. That holds true for Microsoft consoles, as well, with the exception of Gamecubes, which always were a bit finicky (and why I prefer using a backwards compatible Wii for them). In fact, I'm not sure it's even possible to break a SNES or Dreamcast, short of throwing them out of a three-story window directly into a garbage compactor.

I've had a lot less luck with PC-specialized controllers, which is why I went with the 360 controller over the Logitech one the first go-around. A learning experience, I suppose. :P
