Ever since playfire was using users to auto-spam messages and pre-creating accounts, I haven't trusted them. I trust http//www.raptr.com much more (been a user since they were sponsored by GameSpot years ago).

Is this some kind of Raptr?

Pretty much. They duplicated raptr, but when they started up they used very vague sign-up claiming you already had an account and needed to merge your XBL tag, etc. with them to activate it, requesting account name and password. Then, they would use your attached services (XBL most of the time) to spam your friends with invites without your permission. Tried an account and experienced it personally, when my entire friends list was receiving form letters from me daily telling them that "I" created them an account on playfire and they needed to claim it. Haven't trusted them since.

When did they do that? I was there from pretty much the beginning, and I don't remember seeing anything like that. :t

I can't remember when I jumped ship, but considering most spam and maliciousness articles are centered around 2009, I can assume late 2009 / early 2010 was my experience. Tried looking for my old discussion on GameSpot, but they seem to have finally gotten around to pruning old dead threads :P

This sound similar to what happened to you? ETA: Welp, here's another one. :t
Thankfully they don't do that anymore. That is a massive load of crap.

The reason why I didn't have that issue could be because I never gave it any login info, thus it had no way to send spam messages to my friends through Xbox Live. And I think all of my friends are too paranoid to do so, too.
Shit like that is why I don't trust Playfire, Raptr, or any other site with my login info. And I also dislike linking accounts for the same reason. Too many ways for them to fuck ya over.

All personal opinion of course, but: Not a chance. And I don't even like Raptr either, on top of that, so...

They're both okay. It just depends on what you want out of a site. Playfire tracks PS3 games without needing your login info, while Raptr often gives out rewards* based on which games you've played. And you can manually track your play time on Raptr.

And Raptr has a desktop app which allows you to chat with friends and take screenshots, but I've never really found a use for it since I've got Xfire, which does a much better job at those things.

*Most of the time the rewards aren't all that interesting, though. Mainly addons for MMOs and FTP games, though they have given away full titles on rare occasions.

I've had a Playfire account ever since their beta. I love it! As far as gameplay tracking goes, I like it a bit more than Raptr. Of course it does have times to crap the bed, but that still beats asking for your login info in order to auto-track certain games. ¬_¬
But Playfire definitely needs a manual tracking option.

If you're on PC, why not just use Xfire?

Edit: I just now made an account to check it out, and saw what it's really about. It just combines data from Steam, Xfire, XLive and PSN into one cohesive website. Very nice.

Xfire is the best imo without all that achievement and fancy ranks crap. Only thing that is an issue is the time it takes them to support some not so popular games. Though their beta looks bad right now, I hope they keep the old style.

I used playfire when it was more like facebook. We had our forums, a great community, blogs, nice discussions, walkthroughs and etc.

Then they raped the website and made it look like twitter :D

PS: Raptr all the way
