I'm looking for TV shows with a lot of action, gritty drama. Here's a list of shows I've watched :

  • the Walking Dead
  • Breaking Bad
  • Bate's Motel
  • Game of Thrones
  • Dexter
  • Orange is the New Black

I've been in a drought of good, violent TV shows really. Recommend anything you want, except Anime. I can't really get into that kind of stuff.

It has nothing to do with the movie, just the name and setting

Well, don't belittle it with that description. I'm three episodes in and it's excellent. Coen brothers are executive producers.

I never implied it's bad, just that it has nothing to do with the movie

It actually does, if you watched the movie you will understand the money stavros gets in a flashback!

Nothing? Same characters pop up now and then and the red ice pick and Stavros' money.

hahah, lol. The title of the movie is A Serbian Film. No connection to Oldboy, s/he was just mentioning other movies with a gritty subline.

The Chaser,
Memories of Murder( Not so gritty but still extremely good),

Hannibal // American Horror Story (both quite a bit of blood and horror)
Orange Is The New Black // Orphan Black (some drugs/killing/drama not as gritty as the first 2 but very good imo).

p.s. all the shows you listed are brilliant shows, you have good taste. :)

To each their own. I love all those shows (including AHS) but listed 4 shows that are pretty different from one another so the chances of someone liking at least 1 out of the 4 is high.

Glad you watched Dexter it is simple brilliant! Really would watch Spartacus, that show is one of my all time favs. Sons of Anarchy definitely has it's fair share of violence, great show :)

Misfits and skins are two highly rated dark British TV shows with quite a lot of violence in them (Skins with heavy drug use and Misfits with violence). Survivors wasn't really up to my taste but is also highly rated zombie survival series (again British). Finally "Dead Set" which is a big brother horror series. Basically people in the big brother house slowly find out that they are the last in town ect...

I just finished season one of Skins. I wouldn't agree with calling it violent thus far, but I accept it may be more so later. It's good for other reasons though.

Spartacus, it's over the top violence, quite entertaining. Also, True Detective is fantastic, completely different from Spartacus of course, but fantastic.

Deadwood

"The town of Deadwood, South Dakota in the weeks following the Custer massacre is a lawless sinkhole of crime and corruption. Into this uncivilized outpost ride a disillusioned and bitter ex-lawman, Wild Bill Hickok, and Seth Bullock, a man hoping to find a new start for himself. Both men find themselves quickly on opposite sides of the legal and moral fence from Al Swearengen, saloon owner, hotel operator, and incipient boss of Deadwood. The lives of these three intertwine with many others, the high-minded and the low-lifes who populate Deadwood in 1876."

Not sure it's as violent as you're looking for ( I have'nt seen anything on your lists =[ ), but Vallhala Rising has some nice gore. It's not very action-packed as I recall, so if you prefer action it may not suit you. Has beautiful visuals in my opinion.

Thought of some more:

Re-Animator - Not a lot of violence, but has some. Would mostly recommend if you also like horror.

The Grey - Pretty gritty and all-around good.

The Snowtown Murders - Very gritty. I don't remember a lot about it, but I remember thinking it was worth watching.

Killing Season - This was pretty mediocre story-wise, but the acting (of course) was splendid and it was nice visually. Plenty of violence.

The Killer Inside Me - Very violent. I didn't like it at all really, except for the violence, which was done really well.

I don't watch much television, but I really liked Criminal Minds. I don't recall much explicit violence, but there was a fair amount of gore.
