Gritty violent TV Shows?

Sons of Anarchy and The Shield.

The Wire, not much of an action series, but it's so real that it feels like a documentary.

TV - Oz (HBO, prison drama, 1997-2003)
TV - Trailer Park Boys (Showcase, crime comedy/drama, 2001-2015)

^Those are my favourite TV shows of all time. Oz is nearly nonstop violence and drama. Trailer Park Boys (produced and filmed in my city)is a crime comedy but has great character development so dramatic elements too.

Twin Peaks, The Shield, The Wire, Sons of Anarchy, The Sopranos are great shows too.

Drama is the name of the game there. and there are some grity scenes...
(i won't mention Dr Who, cause it's neither, just a good fun show)

On a more serious note, Utopia

Cannot recommend True Detective enough. Holy hell.

Not really violent, but I've been absolutely addicted to Law & Order. Specifically SVU. Such interesting plotlines.

hmm well i dont know about too many tv shows from the US since im from the UK but i would reccomend:

Misfits

Being Human (UK version, havent even bothered to look at an ep from the american one yet)

Utopia

all three are amazing shows and series 2 of utopia was announced recently, so that should be airing quite soon.
