Barely after the release of the so-called "redux" versions, both the originals aren't available. I suppose it makes sense, them devs wanting the people to buy the new versions. Yet, that's a downer to those who had already spent money on buying the game earlier. It's like "We made a better version of the game with better graphics, so buy the game again! Because we possibly can't update the graphics in the game itself, oh noes!" [Not exactly sarcastic here, it might be true, but then it's like an insult to the early purchaser]

What do you think?

My thought is that I feel cheated, buy last light when I came out, and if removed from steam should give us the redux version.

Well, I don't suppose giving a redux copy to everyone who bought LL and 2033 would be profitable for the devs, after all they've got to make a profit too. Then again, they could've added the features as an update for us. Really shitty move on their part.

They could've pulled that off. Owners of Shadowrun Dragonfall got the Directors Cut (which is a completely separate release) for free. Owners of Deus Ex Human Revolution got the upgrade to the Directors Cut for free as well. Why couldn't they have done the same for the Metro games?

I never got DXHRDC for free and afaik, no one else did. We got 80% off or something though.

Don't know about Shadowrun, but Deus Ex: HR buyers (even day 1 buyers like me) did not get the Director's Cut for free. I think what they did was offer an 80% discount to owners of both the base game and the Missing Link dlc.

Edit: beat me to it :P

My guess is that it's because its the whole game remade on a new engine, not just addition of "directors cut" which is "heres that one mission we deleted and also this helmet or whatever"

That only happened to those who had all the DLC to me as I needed one I want to charge 5 euros for update ...

I believe that when the novelty wears off a couple of months quite possibly we upgraden games.

The discount for earlier buyers wasn't enough, and it was only valid during the pre-order period when we didn't know if it was worthy to re-buy those "upgraded" versions. Now we know it isn't for Last Light Redux.

After all this I'm not planning to buy those games again, so... bad for them I guess. Last Light works fine to me, and so it does 2033 with some tweaks + D3D Overrider.

Yeah. To anyone who hasn't played the original games (2033 & Last Light), make sure you have installed in your system the lastest version of PhysX (v9.13.1220) and also disable "Advanced PhysX" from the Game Options in each game (unless you have a very powerful Nvidia card).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

To clarify a bit: Make sure you that a new PhysX version is installed AFTER launching Last Light for the first time. The game installs a older version on its own. Has been known for a while, but seems neither Valve nor the devs care about it.

Comment has been collapsed.

They did, a couple of weeks ago with a new update for Last Light after the release of Last Light Redux... But you're right, before that the PhysX version installed with Last Light usually screwed up Metro 2033 and other games that required PhysX. Now the game installs the latest version.

I think the devs are at least justified in selling Metro 2033 Redux as a separate product instead of an update.
It looks like they gave the game a complete graphical overhaul.

I honeslty have to agree with you on this one, the graphics overhaul was pretty darn big. To add on to that fact, many people just got it from the humble bundle for cheap. I feel like they should've atleast gave us a 10%+ coupon on the redux though.

I got it for free from this site, so it's nothing bad for me :D But yeah, i can hear you. It was the same with Zombie Driver, and Zombie Driver HD, but i think we can mention Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Deus Ex: HR Director's Cut... (i sucked with both) it's the same ripoff, disgusting business move. And to mention a positive example, when the GFWL was shut down, and the Batman games moved to Steam, Rocksteady gave free keys for the GOTY versions of the game, even if you only had the regular retail version.

Yeah, I realised this last week or so that I can't purchase some DLC for it because now it requires the DC version. An extra £12 on top of the DLC makes any of the purchases a total no-go, especially not given I've already cleared it before. Oh wells.

I have bought both the Last Light Complete Edition and 2033, so i dont thing its worth it buying them again at full price just for some graphic tweaks or the "new" engine that could be added with a Redux DLC at half price or something. :)

Comment has been collapsed.

So what? The're great games made even better with improved gameplay, visuals, and sound. The new engine is optimized to shit, there's a plethora of bug fixes, and they even include all the dlc.

The original games are still in your library, they aren't allowed to just take them away without refunding you your money. Plus, I"m sure there are plenty of safe websites where you buy steam keys for the original games if you want anyway.

They're one of my favorite game studios right up there with CD Projekt Red, Naughty Dog, and Valve, and I would gladly pay money for that same game twice.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's the point, overhauled graphics, improved gameplay and other features are not bad, but when they're making a specially different game for it rather than releasing an update, do you not see that the people who purchased Metro already earlier would have to buy the same game, with the same storyline(IMO, it's a one-time play), just more graphics and stuff. Updating wouldn't have exactly hurt them because people would still buy Metro (those who hadn't) after hearing it got revamped, etc or just like any other normal game on steam, and the purchasers wouldn't have any qualms/problems because they get their stuff too.

I'm not saying that the devs don't need to make a profit, but they sure could've tried to not do something shitty, which is like a middle finger to the face of all those who've bought it.

I think this new trend of releasing remakes of remakes to get double the money is a crappy way to make a profit. A DLC would have been a better choice.

Comment has been collapsed.

The only thing I really find to fault with it is this:

When Square released Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut, they made it apply a 75% off discount to anyone that already owns it (On Steam anyway, not sure about other platforms).

I think that a similar thing should have been done with Metro 2033/LL. I'd be quite okay with the idea of dropping like $5-7 to get the Redux versions with full DLCs included and all that jazz. But where it charges us full price for it I think it's kinda messed up. There's no way I'll pay full price again for them, so instead I'll just wait until I see a sale to pick them up ridiculously cheap and call it good.

I get that Deep Silver put down a fair investment, to buy them from the bankruptcy, and then turn around and sink development time into revamping them and all that, and that they are trying to see if they can turn a profit from that, and probably evaluating the sales of the Redux versions to consider the value of investing in the future of the series. However, I still really think they could've done a better job of enticing previous owners. Even just making it like 50% off or something, to make us feel like we're not being totally shafted, would've gone a long way I think.

I'm okay with Metro 2033 being pulled as there is no reason to have two versions. Anyone who buys Metro 2033 without knowing of Redux would likely have buyers remorse. I am not okay with the fact that Last Light's Redux came out so quickly after the game. It should have been added as DLC as opposed to a totally new game.

Like seriously, Skyrim has the HD pack, should they have held it back and released Skyrim HD Edition? Some developers really need a morality check.

The real question is, will all those free Metro 2033 keys gain value now that it's no longer available? I just checked the store and I can see Metro 2033, but Last Light seems to be missing.

The question here is whether or not the redux will run as well as the previous versions, given machines of the same specs. If it raises the bar, some are being pushed off the bottom. If the price of the redux version and the price of the old version (before removal) are not the same, then it's a price-hike in conjunction with limiting the customer's options.

I'm all for compensating time and effort for optional goods (DLC, redux, etc), but by restricting the choices it is more of a corralling manuever.

I think that this redux business is to generate capital for a new project. Like they asked their accountant what they could afford to spend, and he said they couldn't afford anything new. So they had to figure out how to make some money with their existing products.

I actually bought both the originals even though I was aware of the Redux versions. I doubt my PC could run the Redux versions well but it can run the originals well enough and they were bought during sales. I still don't like what the company is doing and I'm generally not a fan of remasters of redux(s).
