[Update: I've decided to play: Bioshock.

Not only did it have the most votes (and probably most comments), but it's not tremendously long, is an RPG (which I've had an itch for), and has a "twist" (?) which could get spoiled for me down the road. Plus, there's a chance I might split my time between Bioshock and SOMA, because the latter lends itself to playing alone at night, which will be my (rare) situation. I did the same thing with STASIS during another of her trips. But this post has definitely bumped up Mass Effect and Talos in my backlog.

I think I'm going to play the original version, not Remastered. That way I don't have to worry about achievements / completion and I've heard there are lots of bugs in Remastered. I still need to decide if I'm going to play it with a controller or KB+m. I'll be closing this thread tonight because I'm afraid of getting spoilers...apparently I already got one.]

Original message (and GA) follows:

I have a little bit of extra gaming time this month since the wife will be on travel for work for about 10 days, spanning most of two weekends. I can only play in the evenings due to kids (although I play other stuff with them).

I have never played any of the above games. I'd like to start one of them this month, even though in most cases above I won't finish it this month (which is fine). This is a good month to make some good progress on a longer game. I'd like your vote from among the above choices.

If you're curious, you can look at my itching to play list, which contains all of these games and more.

To be honest, I've probably eliminated a couple of these games from contention for one reason or another, but I still am interested in how many votes they get.

And a little GA for your trouble (Level 3). Thanks!

Which game should I play this month?

View Results
Bioshock (original, not Remastered)
Dragon Age Origins (not Ultimate Edition)
Mad Max
Mass Effect
Soma
The Talos Principal (w/Gehenna DLC)
The Witcher II (GOG)
Other-- I've scanned your games list and suggest the game I mention below in the comments

If you can, go for Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate! 💚

All great suggestions, thanks. Although I have so many big RPGs in my backlog I'll probably never play Oblivion. I also have it on PS3, so I'm holding onto it in case of a Steam Apocalypse. ;-)

I picked Bioshock. One of my favourite games ever! I completed the original version as well as the Remastered version.

If you choose this game, I'd be interested in hearing what you think of it when you've completed it. :)

I'd say SOMA; it's a great Horror title, but it also had some really incredible moments that I don't have the heart to spoil here..

You can easily finish bioshock and witcher 2 in 10 days (both great games).
If you have limited time it might be not enough for mass effect - but if you are in mood for space-opera it's obvious answer.
Can't say about Dragon age - because I have to finish it myself but heard a lot of good stuff about it.

I have only played a few games from this list but Dragon Age Origins was one of the games that made me go WOW after I started playing it and its gameplay is still very enjoyable. But given the time constraint, it might not be the best game to choose from the list. Although I haven't played the two telltale games in your list, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead Season 2, I would recommend that you play both the games, as it is likely that you will be able to enjoy and end both the games given the limited time you have.

Yep, I will definitely enjoy those two Telltale games. Just have to make time for them.

Voted Mass Effect but only if you intend to play the whole trilogy. I played (and reviewed) Bioshock recently which was good but not as all time "FANTASTIC" as it tends to regarded....I think the sequel was probably a better experience for me.

I have ME2 on Steam but I will not play ME3, because it's only on Origin.

Why won't you play it because it's on Origin? It's kind of not worth playing or reading only two parts of a trilogy,. especially when the launcher has no impact upon the game. (and this isn't an EGS conundrum since it's an EA game...)

Well, if I play ME and ME2, maybe I'll change my mind and install Origin (and buy ME3) so that I can complete the series. Or maybe it will come out on Steam someday. I don't know what an EGS conundrum is.

You really, really, really need to play Dragon Age Origins. This game is a masterpiece and the graphics are still good to look at.

I've told my wife I want to be a stay-at-home gamer so I can play all of these games. So far, she's unconvinced. *cries*

Play The Guild II instead.

I only have The Guild 2: Renaissance, but presumably that's what you meant. I picked that one out of all of the Guilds as it looked like it had the best combination of graphics, gameplay, and stability on modern systems. But who knows.

It does looks awesome, though. I added it to my itching to play list. Thanks for the reply!

I voted for witcher 2 as i played it for the first time a few months ago and i felt in love with it even though i am not a fan of fantasy game.
Anyway i hope you enjoy whatever game you pick and your wife has a safe trip.

I want to scream "Ass Effect!"

But as your time is limited, and both Mass Effect Trilogy and DA Trilogy can take hundreds of hours in total - I'd say Bioshock and then Talos Principle.

I'm not eliminating anything based solely on how long they are, and I don't necessarily feel like I have to finish any of the series. I take it one game at a time. :)

I may be the only one here who wasn't impressed by Bioshock at all (yep, including the story), couldn't even make myself finish the game. On the other hand, you've got three awesomely written RPGs on the list (The Witcher 2 is my personal favourite), Soma can be played either as a "horror" game with hide-and-seek or as a walking simulator depending on your preferences, but it's still got a pretty intelligent and really creepy sci-fi story, and The Talos Principle is probably the best first-person puzzle game ever made (can't complain about narrative as well), so there's that (can't comment about Mad Max, haven't played it yet).

Anyway, if you are looking for quality narrative (as your list strongly suggests), I'd also recommend to pay attention to adventure games from your library, you've got quite a few outstanding ones (such as Oxenfree, Gemini Rue, Downfall, Memoria, Gray Matter, Contradiction, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 - not to mention some golden classics that you've maybe just played before Steam).

Oh yes-- I'm a big point-and-click / adventure game fan, and have played many of them. But I still have many great ones to play (as your list suggests). In particular, I've been [itching to play]() Memoria and Oxenfree, and several other adventure games. Over the past few months, I put in 55 hours into Dreamfall Chapters-- which became one of my favorite games of all time. But with this extra chunk of time I have this month, I wanted to take on an RPG or other long game. Maybe I'll pick a nice point-and-click to play with the kids during this time to balance it out.

Thanks for the reply!

The problem with the achievements is that I won't get most of them, and I'm a completionist by nature. I'd rather a nice, enjoyable playthough where I don't have to worry about missing collectibles, challenge rooms, etc.
