[Update: I've decided to play: Bioshock.

Not only did it have the most votes (and probably most comments), but it's not tremendously long, is an RPG (which I've had an itch for), and has a "twist" (?) which could get spoiled for me down the road. Plus, there's a chance I might split my time between Bioshock and SOMA, because the latter lends itself to playing alone at night, which will be my (rare) situation. I did the same thing with STASIS during another of her trips. But this post has definitely bumped up Mass Effect and Talos in my backlog.

I think I'm going to play the original version, not Remastered. That way I don't have to worry about achievements / completion and I've heard there are lots of bugs in Remastered. I still need to decide if I'm going to play it with a controller or KB+m. I'll be closing this thread tonight because I'm afraid of getting spoilers...apparently I already got one.]

Original message (and GA) follows:

I have a little bit of extra gaming time this month since the wife will be on travel for work for about 10 days, spanning most of two weekends. I can only play in the evenings due to kids (although I play other stuff with them).

I have never played any of the above games. I'd like to start one of them this month, even though in most cases above I won't finish it this month (which is fine). This is a good month to make some good progress on a longer game. I'd like your vote from among the above choices.

If you're curious, you can look at my itching to play list, which contains all of these games and more.

To be honest, I've probably eliminated a couple of these games from contention for one reason or another, but I still am interested in how many votes they get.

And a little GA for your trouble (Level 3). Thanks!

Which game should I play this month?

View Results
Bioshock (original, not Remastered)
Dragon Age Origins (not Ultimate Edition)
Mad Max
Mass Effect
Soma
The Talos Principal (w/Gehenna DLC)
The Witcher II (GOG)
Other-- I've scanned your games list and suggest the game I mention below in the comments

Oh, Talos is a pretty good game. I didn't sit down and play it all in one go though, it was my kill some boredom game that I played in short bursts over a couple of months. I probably should have kept playing though because I got distracted by other things and didn't go back to it yet.

Since your time is a bit limited, I'd say "Mad Max". You can play a bit, save and continue later.
Soma is similar in this aspect, but significantly shorter.
Witcher 2 is more demanding, lore- and time-wise.
Finally Dragon Age Origins is something for people with a lot of patience and/or time, who don't mind figuring all the right combinations and correct answers, reading through countless conversations and progressing slowly through the game world. Not something you'd play briefly.

I can't say about the other games, since these are the only ones from the list that I've played.

Definitely enjoyed Bioshock. It had a good balance of action and horror without it feeling like a survival game, while the setting was quite nice quasi-steampunk-metropolis style feel

Bioshock. But why not the remastered? If you have the original then the remastered should be free for you.

I've heard it's buggy, plus it has lots of achievements I'll never get. I want to play the game for the story without worrying about achievements/completion. Left to my own devices, I'm a completionist.

[Edit: I could play Remastered from an alt account via Family Sharing if you think it's a much better edition.]

I have yet to see any bugs, but then again, I have yet to get too far in it anyway. Reinstalled to try it again.

As for achievements, I know there are some I'll never get as well.

So all in all, to each their own.

Although I played a demo version on PS3 many years ago, I didn't get far. All I remember was a cool game atmosphere. It would be a blind playthrough.

I think you should play The Cave, it's a really good puzzle game with some platforming here and there. Personally, I enjoyed that game a lot :)
If you're not in the mood for puzzles, then I'd pick Mad Max if I were you.

I'm kind of saving The Cave for split-screen co-op with my kids when they get older. They are twins, so I need to wait for them to be old enough not to get freaked out by The Twins in the game. (They're 7 1/2 now).

How scary (and difficult) is it? What's a good age to start playing it with them-- any ideas?
I'm not worried about difficulty so much because they're already helping me in other games and ofc we'll be working together. But I don't want them to have nightmares. ;)

It's not really scary, as far as I remember. A little dark in some levels, but not horror stuff ;) It's not a difficult game either, I was able to finish it without much troubles (I'm really terrible at difficult games, so if I can beat something, you know it's fairly easy :D ).

Other: INSIDE. :D

Voted for Talos Principle, since I've been wanting to play that game since forever and just yesterday read a Portal reddit thread that had loads of people hyping up it up saying Talos is a must-play. (You could tell me how correct they were. :P) Whatever you decide, enjoy your extra gaming time & hope your wife has a wonderful, safe trip!

Bioshock
The Talos Principal

Both are great games. If you want a great all around game then Bioshock. If you want the puzzle aspect more then The Talos Principal. I voted Talos Principal. :)

Voted for Mass Effect. Currently playing Andromeda and really enjoying it (like the previous parts). However, if you're into lore and usually explore/read nearly everything in RPGs, it will take time. Same is valid for DA:O (great game as well) and Witcher 2, the latter one has even two separate paths and it's imho the weakest part of the trilogy.

If you'd prefer to finish the game, I'd suggest Bioshock (though you will probably end up wanting to see/read everything due to its great atmosphere and lore) or Mad Max (not a milestone like Bioshock, but still good and enjoyable for many hours).

SOMA and Talos can probably be beaten faster, but I haven't finished/played them yet.

There was a patch addressing it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TUO-GNI1U8). I've seen a few animations that went off so far or conversations which broke (not in video scenes). Lip sync isn't correct all the time (I'm playing in German though). Barely broke the immersion for me yet.

I explored everything and read everything in Mass Effect, and still finished it in about 35 hours on my first playthrough. If you set the difficulty down to Easy, which I highly recommend, you could easily do it in less than 30 - particularly if you're not a slow and thorough player like me. It's a very manageable RPG, and one of the few games that I replayed (along with the sequel) and enjoyed just as much the second time around.

For comparison, Dragon Age: Origins took me 80+ hours, and I stopped trying to explore and do everything towards the end when I grew impatient on the Deep Roads (that part went on for so long...). Great game, but an absolute time sink.

I didn't look up the hours before, but I just checked and have 62 hours at it. In ME2 I have 65, in ME3 56 (both with DLCs). Usually play on Normal, however, it seems as if I'm a bit slower. :D

Wow, impressive. I'm pretty slow and thorough myself, and I remember ME 1 and ME 2 taking me 34 and 43 hours respectively on a first playthrough.

I played the physical versions, so I can't verify the times, but I remember being (pleasantly) surprised by how relatively short they were for RPGs. Origin says I have 111 hours in ME 3, but the bulk of that was multi-player - I don't remember how long the campaign took me.

I will definitely set the difficulty to Easy when I play it. I'm a very slow and thorough player-- I can't imagine I'll be done in 35 hours.

I'm a slow and thorough player myself, and I remember finishing ME 1 in 34 hours. It's pleasantly short for an RPG. ME 2 took me a bit longer at about 43 hours.

For comparison, Dragon Age: Origins took me 80+ hours, I just beat Assassin's Creed Odyssey at 110 hours (with 98% explored), and I'm currently 57 hours into Battle Chasers: Nightwar. I feel like if I can finish ME 1 in 34 hours on Normal, most people can do so in under that on Easy.

And setting it to Easy is honestly the best choice. While I love ME 1 for the story, the combat is rather rubbish, and downright boring by half way through (I'm getting sudden flashbacks to Planescape: Torment). I played as a Soldier so I could just shoot everything and get it over with as quickly as possible.

But the combat in ME 2 is actually really fun, at least as anything other than a Soldier. I had an absolute blast as an Adept (explosive space wizard), and highly recommend that. And ME 3's combat is even better, by far the best of the trilogy (even as the story and writing are, unfortunately, the worst of the trilogy).

Dragon Age Origins is amazing! There's no way you'll finish it in 10 evenings, though. But it's so good, and well worth playing.

Bioshock is great, and you could finish it in that time.

Mass Effect has a great story, but tedious combat, so just set it to Easy and enjoy the roleplaying and world building. At about 30 hours long, you could just make it in 10 days. Btw, Female Sheppard is the better Sheppard.

Witcher 2 seems really good, but I've barely started it, and keep getting pulled away by something else whenever I do. Another long game that I'll doubt you'll be able to finish in that time.

Soma is really good, and easily playable given your time frame.

The Talos Principle is good, can't go wrong with it if you feel like some puzzles. I just don't feel it's quite as must play as the others.

Mad Max is the weakest game on your list, and I'd save it for after you've played Dragon Age, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Witcher 2, and Soma. Or for when you just want a more easy going game that doesn't require as much thought and effort, letting you turn your mind off as you drive around and biff people up.

Thanks, Tsuper. I'm surprised how many votes Talos got! I wonder if it's partly because it's the only puzzle game, whereas there are several RPGs among which to divide votes.

Another vote for SOMA from me. I've played all of Frictional's games. The atmosphere in their games are amazing. SOMA is not just their best game, it's one of the best games I have ever played. When I played Amnesia, I could only handle it in "short" (2 hours or so) bursts per night. With SOMA, the story and the way it's told just made me want to push on and find out more. I ended up finishing it in 3 days.

Either Bioshock if you want some action or Talos Principle for puzzles, whichever you feel like. I voted for Talos today.

I'd consider Mad Max and Witcher 2 as the less compelling options by way of their mechanical shortcomings [such as the fact that CD Projekt Red clearly couldn't afford to hire anyone remotely competent to handle combat systems until the third Witcher game and that Mad Max's open world and side system elements aren't near as well handled as its core missions] and Dragon Age's lack of DLCs earn it a place on the bench as well.

I'm not a fan of modern horror games like Soma (though it does seem to be one of the better ones), and non-co-op puzzle games like Talos would be more something I'd play in-between other games.

As such, I'd push for Bioshock (if you want something a bit more straightforward to get into) or Mass Effect (if you want something with more dialogue and RPG depth). Bioshock is more of an atmospheric loner experience, while Mass Effect feels lighter and more stimulating given the emphasis on party member involvement.
I recall Bioshock also feeling fairly repetitive at times, but that's not necessarily a downside, if you're wanting something a bit more mindnumbing. Comparatively, Bioware games are a bit more mentally draining with their emphasis on picking through dialogues, arranging party elements, and customizing characters.

I'd also recommend Bastion off your overall list, if you haven't yet given it a try.
Not really sure what your idling habits are like, so I didn't look at any of your games with any meaningful gametime on them. ^.^

Thanks, Sooth.

Yeah, Bastion is one of my worst completionist downers. I gave it a spin shortly before I cared about achievement completion percentage. I need to get back to it for that reason...

As for my idling habits, exactly 247 games at the moment.
