8 times I've tried to solve this problem and look at this
god awful chessboard. No wonder I can't solve it. I don't think
1 person can when it's this scrambled up.
Come on, I really need some help figuring this out. If
everyone at least tries, there might be Kerbal Space Program to win.

Solution:

This is a binary puzzle, which I think most understood rather quickly. It uses the 1-8 and A-H from a chessboard.

One of the most important hints was that 42 is reverse C. 42 in binary (as could be seen on my tattoo) is 00101010. Now look at my board and check column C. Counting black as 0 and white as 1 you can see that we have that binary number on that row. And because I said it's REVERSE C, it means that it's 42 if you read it from top to bottom. A chessboard is numbered from bottom to top, so you would normally read it the other way around.

Now that you understand how to read the binary on the board, we need to find which rows and columns to use. That's where the text comes in. Each row starts with the coordinate to use. 8g1Ce, row 8, column g, row 1, column c, column e.

And that's it. Translate the binary that you get from that and you have your GA-code. Hope you enjoyed this brain teaser, even if you weren't able to solve it. :)

Final hint:
42 is reverse C, but how does that fit into a chess board, and where would it be possible to find that in the puzzle image?

Once that problem is solved, how would it be possible to get the information you need for the characters that you need?

Don't share information with others. If you are struggling badly with how to apply something, feel free to ask me in an old public GA or ask the question here if you think it will not spoil anything. I'll let you know if it does and will ask you to edit it if so. :)

The solution is obvious. The white pieces go through the center left to right. Unless you like to eat the cookie part after licking off the white frosting. But honestly that's insane. Oreo's are meant to be eaten with the frosting.

I have no idea. I'll come back to this later but it looks really interesting.

Yes and no. There's no chess pieces or any of the sorts, and deep knowledge of chess is not required. A very basic knowledge of chess or a quick google will give you the info you need.

I can strongly recommend The Secret World. A Lovecraft-inspired MMORPG that's free to play. The quests in it have some really cool riddles, and there are a lot of minor hints online if you don't want to spoil it too much when you get stuck.

Perhaps a bit too advanced, but The Black Watchmen is great if you're an avid puzzle solver.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've tried applying XOR (and, for good measure, also OR and AND) between your columns and the correct binary pattern for the board in the vain hope that converting the results values to ASCII might yield five valid characters. No cigar. I even tried grabbing the numbers that, when represented as decimals or hexadecimals, were valid octals. That's when I knew I was out of ideas and grasping at straws.

It was a nice puzzle, though, especially because I want Kerbal very much and a GA with such a high chance is an absolute must-try. :)

I know this probably won't make much sense, but perhaps you can get an idea from it.

Input: num
(1) Initialize rev_num = 0
(2) Loop while num > 0
(a) rev_num = rev_num*10 + num%10;
(b) Divide num by 10
(3) Return rev_num

That moment when I spend 20 minutes cracking your hint and it finally dawns on me that it's telling me something I already know. I feel pretty damn smart both for cracking it and for figuring out that I'm ahead of where you thought, even if I feel pretty damn stupid for all the rest of the puzzle! :D

If I can understand the hint, how far along am I, in terms of, say, percentage of the thinking done? Perhaps I'm just looking from the wrong point of view, geometrically speaking?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you have found 42, and know where it is and why it's reverse C, then I would say all that's left is to figure out which are the important ones for the puzzle.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm pretty sure I found the link between 42 and C, but I don't quite know how to revert. And possibly what to revert. So I don't think I know why it's reverse C, no. :|

Comment has been collapsed.

we need to find which rows and columns to use

Oh, man, I feel like such a fucking idiot. I got this close and didn't realize that the lines were giving away the positions I should use... I should have looked a little harder at the description. It was literally the only thing I missed. I was thinking that I was wrong about the reversion, but I was right about that all along; I just didn't figure out how to use the result. I feel like Hannibal, who (according to his second-in-command Maharbal, and only if we take Livy's rather unreliable manuscript as fact) knew how to gain a victory, but not how to use one: "Vincere scis, Hannibal; victoria uti nescis".

Despite feeling like a total idiot now, I had a lot of fun. No Kerbal for me, but thanks for the fun puzzle anyway! :D
