Tribes: Ascend
Team Fortress 2
For God's sake there are cheaper games that are simply better. The two I mentioned are "free"! (TF2 almost surely steals about $5 from you, but it's a lot cheaper.) MW3 is a point-and-click game that requires minimum intelligence, and BF3 was built to require intelligence, but since most of the people who play BF3 could easily belong in MW3, it requires no intelligence to beat them. In turn, the standards are lowered, and usually both teams fight to a similar degree of uncoordinated and stupid. My best tip would be to avoid the multiplayer games that are biggest on consoles. Fortunately, those games keep the point-and-clickers out of the best FPS's. Not saying you can't have fun on MW3 or BF3, but it's the same way you have fun playing LoL against bots.

So far I've bought every single BF and COD game... Of course games got more realistic (CGI), but in most cases generally the games went downhill (quality-wise). It seems to be always one element these games focus on. If you directly compare BF3 and MW3 I feel BF3 wants to come off closer to actual tactical realism (with vehicles etc) while MW3 wants to keep things simple and easy to jump into for some quick fun shooting.
Hence MW3 does not really look any nicer than any previous games and does not really add anything new (in my opinion!). However I do find MW3 easier to play and I would probably have more fun returning to MW3 than BF3.
Nowadays BF3 seems to be filled with hackers that cant be avoided because of a DX-issue and since DICE does not actively filter them out the game is getting ruined for me little by little. The fact that there are not any other games at stake for most hackers (since its origin) does not make it any better either.
For myself I can say the first COD was legendary, everything was great and up until COD4/COD5 the series were totally great for me. After that for some reason (but I am sure it was the whole DLC thing) it got less attractive for me. I love FPS but it takes a whole lot more originality for me to keep playing them. I seem to be more focussed on CO-OP these days anyway.
To conclude: Both are FPS but focus on completely different things. Both are made by companies that want to empty your pockets more than they would in the old days, but hey shit, that's life.
