Complexity is part of the reason, but only a part. There are complex games out there now that have huge followings.
You can play in ascii mode, makes everyone happy. I was raised on nethack (not to mention minimalist dungeon crawlers), but go ahead and call me a girl or whatever since I can't stand playing these games in ascii mode any longer.
