UPDATE

I'm officially retiring this thread, as I don't spend nearly as much time on Steamgifts as I used to. Thank you to all who contributed! If anyone else is willing to take charge and start up a new version of this thread, feel free!

I'm assuming many of us have a good amount of unplayed games in our Steam library. Asking people to commit to completing them is a tall order, but just trying them out?

Welcome to...

The Game Tasting

How it works: Play an unplayed game from your backlog for 10 minutes -- just 10! A quick taste. Then, come back here and answer three simple questions about your tasting:

  • What game did you play?
  • What did you think about it?
  • Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

What I'll do: Because I want to hear about various games and get people to play things, I'll incentivize this thread by adding a new giveaway for every five tastings that get completed. All giveaways will be level 2. I've already given one to get the ball rolling, and it's perfectly fine for one person to submit multiple tastings.

What you need to do:

  • Submit your tasting as a TOP-LEVEL COMMENT and not as a sub-comment on someone else's. (I'll only be counting tastings that show up in my notifications. Feel free to comment on others' tastings though!)
  • Please bold the title of your game so that others can scan the thread easily.

What game did you play?

Move n Bloom

What did you think of it?

It's a cute and simple puzzle game. I really like how the game is explained without the use of words. The game is very simple and easy to figure out, so it doesn't require any complex explanations. It's a new release, so there aren't any guides/walkthroughs yet, but people will probably make some in the future as some of the puzzles can take some time.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Yes. It's going to be the next game I'm finishing.

 What game did you play?

Cats Organized Neatly

What did you think about it?

It's a cute concept and the art is pretty good, however the difficulty of the levels weren't balanced. While some levels extremely easy, some were weirdly difficulty and took a lot of trial and error (which in turn made the game tedious). I'm still positive about the purchase, because it's a cute game from an indie studio/dev, and I'm happy to be supporting them. And the price is cheap enough. But I probably wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to others.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

I actually finished it today, took me around 3 hours in total. Easy to 100% as well.

What game did you play?
Yakuza 0

What did you think about it?
Finally starting this saga and I am enjoying the whole plot. I think it is going to take some time for me to get used to the fighting system, but I will probably enjoy it. On the dark side... THE GAME DOESN'T HAVE AUTOSAVE T_T. Luckily, I checked that out on the steam forum before quitting the game after the first hour of story. Some people said that the game tells you about saving on phone booths, but I never saw that, but, even so, it was really weird for me to find a game without autosave... I hope I can remember that everytime I am about to stop playing xD.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Hell yeah I will. And then I will go for Kiwami :D.

What game did you play?

Dead Cells

What did you think about it?

It's definitely not my kind of game but I really enjoyed it. It's easy enough to learn the controls and the soundtrack is really good. Apparently it's a really hard game to finish. I usually go for easier, more casual games but this one definitely got me hooked. I was actually avoiding it for the longest time but I'm really glad I picked it up.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Well, yes. This was an actual tasting because I first tried it with Steam family sharing option, and played it thanks to my brother. Since I really enjoyed it I went ahead and purchased a copy. I have around 7 hours now, and I'm nowhere near close to beating the game - but it's really fun! (I don't have a huge backlog so I indulge in purchasing games from time to time).

  • What game did you play?

BulbBoy

  • What did you think about it?

Well, it's a point and click game, and I have a love hate relationship with that genra, especially with those that have absurd enigmas.
It's not really the case here because you don't get stuck for too long in this game, so I think it's a really good point for a point and click.

Tho, I don't really like the eerie/creepy feel of the game. It feels like, if I gift the game to a kid, he's going to need therapy sessions (Tho if you are an adult I guess you are safe ;3). It feels like the Binding of Isaac had s*x with Courage the Cowardly Dog, and even if I'm not fond of it, I understand the appeal of that kind of ambiance.

  • Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Maybe because it feels like it's going to be a rather short game, but since I don't like the ambiance that much... I'm really not sure.

  • What game did you play?

Blair Witch

  • What did you think about it?

Well, at first it just look like a walking simulator: You are searching for a kid that dissapeared in the forest and you have to find it with your dog. Basically, the center of gameplay is your relationship with your dog, which is an amazing idea. Despite being an horror game, it got that calming feel about it: as long as you are with your pup, you feel safe. Your dog can help you by finding hints and following the kid sent... And occasionnal treat rewards and pats on the head (yes you can do that too).

  • Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Absolutely ! It's a great concept for an horror game, or more generally for a game at all. It's really immersive and captivating, even calming at times.
I will totally finish this one !

What game did you play?
Bayonetta

What did you think about it?
A lot of fun. Ridiculously over the top action sequences with great combos and a really cool dashing system. I didn't play a lot, so I can't say more than that... but I think that is what this game is about. There is some story behind it, but the other stuff is what catch the attention.
Oh, and a lot of cutscenes. I think 1/3 (maybe a little more) of my gameplay was watching cutscenes.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yeah. I will try to finish it this month.

What game did you play?
Phasmophobia

What did you think about it?
Hmm... It is weird... Not what I expected. It is way slower than I thought, and most of the time I didn't know if I was doing things right. I would say that it is pretty hard to get used to how the game works when you just start to play.
Oh, and when I could actually finish a mission, there was a server problem that disconnected us (me and my mate) from the server. So we didn't get the rewards (which we needed, because we are poor as hell).
Another thing... the character's speed feels really uncomfortable (SO SLOW).

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yeah, I will keep trying. This seems to be the kind of game I would enjoy, so I will go for that.

 What game did you play?

Tropico 4

What did you think about it?

I bought this game last year during summer sale, and actually tried it back then for a bit. But I didn't really like it, it gave me anxiety, and I stopped after a few mins of puzzling over the tutorial. I have significantly less games on my backlog now, so I thought I can give it another shot. Nope. Still very anxiety-inducing, for some reason. I think it just has a lot of things to be managed, and I'm not good at games where I have to think of a lot of things.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

I'll probably try it a third time later on, but for now, no.

 What game did you play?

Kingdom: Classic

What did you think about it?

I recently got this from Humble Bundle for free. It is an interesting game, but also looks kind of hard. Mainly because there is no tutorial or proper explanation of how things work. 10-20 mins of gameplay doesn't seem enough to understand even the basics. But so far I like it. I somehow managed to survive the first 5 days, but I'll probably die if I play more. It will be fun to play and understand how it works. The character walks slowly, and that's one thing I didn't really enjoy. But I guess it's part of the difficulty. I'm impatient - I want to go places, and I want to go there fast.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Yes. I might even continue right now, but I also have several unfinished games so I'm not sure if that's wise. But I'll definitely play it more.

 What game did you play?

Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles

What did you think about it?

I really like it! I'm already a fan of farming/building/life sims, so Yonder didn't have to do much to impress me to be honest. It looks like it's going to be a really fun, cute, and relaxing game. It reminds me of My Time at Portia (if that game was a bit smaller). One thing that I don't like is that the game is a bit too heavy for my laptop? Even with graphics at the lowest quality, I'm getting low FPS, sadly.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Yes! It's my next game to play and finish. I'm already loving it.

 What game did you play?

Windlands

What did you think about it?

I don't like it. Maybe it's better as a VR game. But with mouse+keyboard, it's not very fun to play. It's similar to A Story About My Uncle as you use a grapple hook to move from one platform to the other. However, the game itself is kind of boring. The levels aren't that interesting to explore. I think it's because the art style is pretty simple and isn't really engaging (at least in terms of exploration) and trying to find all 120 tablets is a pain - they are all over the map and you have to check every small corner for them. I played in easy mode, so the game was actually very easy to complete, which is a blessing because I don't think I could've played it otherwise.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

I finished it because it was my first SteamGifts win, and I recently joined Playing Matters - I thought I should force myself a bit more to play it. However I'm not going back to play it in normal or hard modes, or to get the collectible tablets. And I'm definitely not buying Windlands 2.

Thank you for all of your contributions to this thread, aonrao! I love reading your writeups, especially when you choose games that are in my backlog too! I feel like I get a better idea of the game from reading your description and experience, and I know whether to kind of bump up their mental priority or forego them.

I'm glad you like my comment! I enjoy writing them, and posting here gives me more reason to check games like Tropico 4 - even if I don't really join the GAs haha. I love talking about games, so I wish this thread was more active (and am trying to keep it so).
What kind of games do you like the most? Since gaming is a very subjective experience, it's possible that you will like a game which I didn't.

I'll pretty much give anything a shot save for strategy games, but I tend to fall more on the casual side. I like racing games, platformers and metroidvanias, and adventure games the most, so I tend to go back and forth between those.

  • What game did you play?

7 Grand Steps, Step 1: What Ancients Begat

  • What did you think about it?

This is a game that was in my games lists for years, bought it from a bundle, but I don't know which one cause it was really a long time ago.
It's not the type of game you see everyday. It seems inspired by coin machines to some extent. It's a strategy/ressource managing game I think. It have been fun at least to experience a game so far away from what we already see in the industry. The generation management is interesting, but you have very limited interactions in the game (placing coins into slots mostly) and in a way it feels like a board game, but not a fun one sadly.

  • Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

I don't think so, not my type of game.

What game did you play?
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

What did you think about it?
It is fun. Good graphics, good fighting system and hard fights, and some fast-paced platforming that wasn't boring for me (Castlevania: Lords of Shadows should have learned from this). Overall is pretty good, but it has a couple of bugs:
1°: If you try to use some of your mouse's sidebuttons, they keybindings are going to get screwed up, and you are not going to be able to do some basic stuff. For example, it took me a while to realize why my characer was doing nothing but blocking, and then he wasn't blocking at all; also, I wasn't able to focus on my companion.
2° At some point I did something that I think I wasn't supposed to do, and my character got stuck on nothing for around a minute, not being able to do a single action. For some reason, it came back to normal when I tried to do a strong hit.
Also, you can "freely move your camera", but sometimes the game moves it for you (even 180 degrees changes), making some some fights harder than the usual.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yeah, I plan to beat this game during this month.

What game did you play?
Decay: The Mare

What did you think about it?
It is a point and click horror game about a mental hospital apparently. Slow paced with a couple of puzzles, it can get boring sometimes, but some sequences are really good (like the hand in the bag).

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yeah, I wasn't too convinced about it, but it seems short, so I will finish it.

Are you me?! I just played Enslaved and Decay: The Mare. I liked Enslaved but got about halfway through before deciding to put it aside. It got pretty samey, and I was getting mild motion sickness from the camera.

Decay didn't do a whole lot to grab me, and I ended up leaving it after maybe half an hour. It wasn't particularly bad by any means, but I also didn't really see a strong reason to keep playing.

Oh, yeah, the camera get pretty annoying sometimes. I changed some settings for the way it felt, but still it moves itself a lot sometimes. I haven't played it a lot yet, just finished third chapter, but I don't think I will leave it without beating it.

I know what you meant with Decay. I have to say that the second chapter was pretty good though (better atmosphere and puzzles), and the third chapter was pretty similar to the first one. I wouldn't say it was a really good game, but it was a decent one for me. Good enough to say it wasn't a waste of time.

 What game did you play?

Smile for Me

What did you think about it?

I was recently gifted this game (after it was featured in HB choice). I played it around 20 minutes last night, and it's... well, weird. The art style is definitely not one that I like - not saying it's bad, but not the kind of style that generally interests me. It reminds me of Cartoon Network shows or creepy kids cartoons from a decade ago. So far the game looks fine - you have to solve some puzzles to make the habitants of, well, a place called The Habitat happy. I think it's going to take me a while to figure out how to play but that's part of the fun! The controls are simple, but I didn't really like the mouse controls. Also this game would be much better with controller support. Just sayin'.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Yes. I'll probably play this one the next. It was a gift from someone, so I really want to play and tell them what I thought of it (in detail).

What game did you play?
Castle Crashers

What did you think about it?
A really fun beat 'em up coop game. Nothing more to say about it actually, it is just fun to play. Sometimes feels weird that you can only hit the guy in front of you (not a hit to the sides) and that you can't dash (probably because all the hack & slash games I played recently), but it is still a good game.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Green Hell

What did you think about it?
A really complicated survival game. It seems like I will enjoy it, but I will need a lot of time to get used to the mechanics, particularly when it is about to scratches. I hope the cooking doesn't get too complicated.
Oh, and for some reason, the game crashes when you are about to finish the tutorial (i think there is a cutscene at the end of the tutorial, but I couldn't watch it).

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yeah, but probably not for now. I am going to play it with a friend when we both have enough time to dedicate it (because we will need it).

 What game did you play?

Mystic Pillars
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1197030/Mystic_Pillars_A_StoryBased_Puzzle_Game/

What did you think about it?

I didn't get to play much yet (so it actually fits the theme). It looks well-made, and I like the puzzles so far. I'm only on the first "area" so the puzzles are more tutorial-like than actual levels, meaning they're kind of easy for now. However I think it has potential to raise the difficulty as I progress in game. The idea is simple enough but I like the execution so far. Also it's pretty refreshing to see some diversity as this game is from India. I like the art as well.
If the puzzles don't get more difficult and continue on as it is, then at worst Mystic Pillars can be a short game to just pass the time.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

Yes. I don't know when I can find the time to finish it, but I'll play it starting this week/end.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

What did you think about it?
It is basically what you would expect from a Borderlands game. It is fun and chaotic. I still find uncomfortable how the NPC keep talking and talking while you are fighting, upgrading, looting and so on. I know they try to be funny, but sometimes it gets annoying.

You know what? This is a fun action-puzzle game. It's not perfect, and sometimes I question the physics a bit, but I enjoy the intentionally-primitive graphics as well as the dry, sardonic humor throughout.

And yep, I'll come back and play it more. Actually, I already have. That speaks well. There are three "systems" to explore (i.e., three large sets of puzzles to solve), and I've already gone back and finished the first one. I'll likely see this through to the end, albeit in short sessions of 2-5 levels at a time, which seems to be about the right amount of time to spend with the game at any given moment...a good game to play in between the more sprawling AAA titles.

Thought I should give this a try :)

What game did you play?

Peachleaf Pirates. It's the beta but all beta testers get to play the full game :)

What did you think about it?

A very promising farming sim/adventure game that features Monkey Island-style humour and graphics, some solid roguelite temple-crawling and a chain of fun and unassisted (requires some logical thinking; not those MMO-style quests where everything's guided) quests to complete. The money-earning part can be quite a grind but once you know the trick to earning a lot of cash - honey all the way - and craft yourself a good set of tools that save you energy, then things start to get a little bit easier.

Adding that the game lets you develop your own massive plot of land and you can design your farm the way you like.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

I've actually completed the game - Spent 15 hours+ in total, with most of that time spent doing homesteading/resource-gathering stuff, so yeah I guess so :)

What game did you play?

Summer in Mara

What did you think about it?

Kid-friendly farming simulation game that's very story-driven, and it features a cute girl protagonist who's just determined to help everyone she meets. The game started out fun, but now that I've explored every corner of the map and collected every possible crop type to transplant on my island farm, I'm just focusing on questing and some of the tedium have started to set in. Running to and fro between quest givers, especially those on opposite ends of the island, can get tiresome if you do it in a short span of time. This game might be perfect for kids though - I think I'd ignore all the extra "chores" of questing if I play this game when I'm much younger. Similar to Peachleaf Pirates, earning coins can be quite a grind here, especially early on.

Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?

21+ hours in and I'm still playing the game :P I reckon I'm near the end of the game now though!
